Begbie questions the reader's obligation to his country. He shows how the general public who are pulling together for the war effort will look down upon you. In verse four Begbie even says that by not enlisting you are going against God's wishes,

Is it football still and the picture show,

The pub and the betting odds,

When your brothers stand to the tyrant's blow

And Britains call is God's.

This shows that the general publics view of war at the start of the war. They believed that war was God's battle against evil. Religion was a major part of everyday life at the time so going against God's will was frowned upon.

Pope does not give a very accurate portrayal of war but he gives the general view of war at the time. He continuously refers to war as a game. As I Lay Dying

As I Lay Dying is perhaps, Faulkner's most agile, adroit novel. This is the novel that his versatility and mastery of his craft are revealed. With signs of both tragic and comic genres, literature fans and critics have argued between themselves the true genre of the novel. With the somewhat unchosen classification and very odd writing style, As I Lay Dying has become one of the most unique and puzzling novels in history.

Unlike any other novel of its time, As I Lay Dying has multiple narrators. Every member of the Bundren family, including some members of the community, narrates at least one section. With such an unusual writing style, the novel seems to be a bit confusing, at times, because the variety of narrative voices, provides the reader with multiple, sometimes conflicting perspectives (Lilburn 1-15). Lilburn says that the novel can, at times, leave the reader a bit confused (Lilburn 1) As each section goes by, the lighting and perspective changes. The reader is then forced to make adjustments to be able to stay with the story. With its multiple narrators, the novel starts to get hard, at the end, to follow. But it's the tones and moods that keep the novel together. Even though confused, it is almost instinct to try to interpret the novel. The baffling diversity of tones and moods which characterizes the novel goes some way towards explaining the variety of interpretations it has provoked (Bleikasten 15-18). What the critic is saying is that depending on the person reading the novel and how he or she hears the changing tones and moods, determines how each person will interprets the novel.

Critic Jeffrey M. Lilburn believes that the debate over comedy or tragedy just shows how the novel has defied and resisted any attempt to impose reductive explanations or categorizations (Lilburn 1). However, he does believe that the novel is in fact a tragedy at heart. He examines the tragic elements of the story. A mother on her deathbed listening to the sounds of her own coffin being constructed, for instance. Also many other events along the Bundren's journey seem to be of a tragic nature. These events include a team of mules drowning, a Bundren son Cash breaking his leg, another son Darl being sent to an asylum, and the physical abuse of Dewey Dell, the Bundren daughter (Lilburn 1-14). It is happenings like these that drive Lilburn to believe the story to be a tragedy.

Critic Robert Merrill sides with Lilburn on the matter, defending his belief with even more passion. Merrill says that reading the story as tragic is to experience the novel as Faulkner conceived and wrote it (Lilburn 14). He concedes that the humorous moments are genuinely amusing but merge with events of a truly compelling terribleness (Lilburn 14). For this reason, Merrill is a firm believer that the novel is and was meant to be a tragedy in it's most radical and original form (Lilburn 14).

Other critics tend to emphasize the books comical elements. Patricia R. Schroeder believes that Faulkner's grotesque humor contributes to a comic framework that celebrates the indefatigable man (Lilburn 14). Schroeder sees the novel as a comedy that is the inverse of tragedy it celebrates community survival, applauds the status quo and affirms life in the face of death (Lilburn 14). Schroeder also addresses the frustrated funeral of the south that allows people to reduce death to comic and manageable proportions (Lilburn 14). It may possibly be this aspect that allows Schroeder to see the story as comic. It may give people a way to deal with the loss of a loved one through comic modes to make them better able to handle their situation. Again Schroeder sees comedy at the end of the novel when the Bundren's return home. They do so with a new team of mule's, a new set of teeth for Anse, a new mother and wife, and Dewey Dall's child, unborn. Schroeder believes that this is evidence that even when confronted with the death of an individual, life will prevail (Lilburn 14).

Although Lilburn sees the novel as a tragedy, he is also able to see the comic value in many instances throughout the book. He believes that many of these moments come within the sections narrated by members of the community who are not in the Bundren family. He says a prime example of this is when Samson gives his version of the Bundren's journey. When Samson says, It had been dead eight days, it must have been like a piece of rotten cheese coming into an ant-hill (Lilburn 14) Lilburn sees all sorts of comic value. Lilburn suggests that Peabody's views of Anse are equally amusing (Lilburn 14). Peabody states I be damned if the man that'd let Anse Burden treat him with raw cement ain't got more spare legs than I have (Lilburn 14) while examining Cash's broken leg. It is scenes like these that allow Lilburn to stray away a bit from his original prescription of the novel.

The indecision of these critics is obvious though, as some are even able to see both sides of the argument and almost agree with each. It is because of this inability to clearly choose sides that Andre Bleikasten says that As I Lay Dying embarrasses critics who are hard put to define it's genre (Bleikasten 16). Bleikasten believes that the novel provides us with a comedy and the reverse of comedy, a tragedy, and the derision of tragedy (Bleikasten 17) all at once. Bleikasten seems to fall in line with his contemporaries, being not able to choose a clear category for Faulkner's classic.

It seems as though he was exactly correct because not even these literary scholars seem to be able to determine the true nature of the book. Is the novel a comedy or tragedy? It is possible that there will never be a definite answer. Maybe that is what Faulkner truly wanted.

William Shakespeare's King Lear incorporates many themes, some which are even a recurring pattern throughout the play. The matter of vision and insight, or even the lack of it, is an important theme in this play. This theme is elegantly rendered through the characters of King Lear and Gloucester. The lack of insight or blindness in this play is quite symbolic. Blindness is most often defined as physically lacking deficient in the ability to see. In the case of King Lear, blindness and the lack of vision and insight has a different meaning. For King Lear, blindness was not a physical problem; instead it was a flaw that he possessed. His blindness to see the truth in a person's personality and character was clear in the beginning of the play with Cordelia and later on with Kent. Gloucester, on the other hand, was initially blinded also because of his personal flaw to see what is really there. He eventually did become physically blind, but later attains vision in a different way, vision that Lear does not see or ever attain until it is too late.

From the very beginning of the play, Lear's lack of insight is evident. His sight to see other people's true character is clearly blurred. Lear has trouble telling apart between the truth and lies. In Act I, Lear asks his three daughters who loves him the most. He is unable to see the truth in Goneril and Regan because they cover their true feelings with a disguise, fooling Lear to think they love him the most. Lear knows in his heart that Cordelia loves him dearly, but his lack of insight fails to see Cordelia's true feelings as she responds,

Unhappy that I am, I cannot heave

My heart into my mouth, I love your Majesty

According to my bond, no more nor less. (1.1.-5)

To Lear, Cordelia is not telling him that she loves him. Lear does not understand Cordelia's words; he misunderstands her and is unable to see the love she has for him because of the flattery he has received from Goneril and Regan and because of his lack of insight and understanding. He does not see that Cordelia's love for him is not as false as her sisters. And with his misunderstanding of her love, he disowns her and gives her no share of his kingdom.

Soon after Lear decides to disown Cordelia, his blindness causes him, once again, to act irrational by banishing Kent, one of his most loyal followers. Kent, possessing better insight than Lear, realizes what a rash decision Lear has made disowning Cordelia. Unlike Lear, Kent is able to see the true love that Cordelia has for her father. Trying to help Cordelia, Kent attempts to reason Lear and help him see better by telling him he is making the wrong decision and that he is seeing Cordelia's love for him in the wrong way. To Lear's opposition response, Out of my sight! (1.1.15), Kent quickly replies, See better, Lear, and let me still remain/The true blank of thine eye. (1.1.160-161). Here, Kent tries to make Lear understand and to have Lear listen to him when he is advising him to reconsider and to see better and clearer about the situation with Cordelia. Unfortunately, with all the anger and the lack of insight, Lear refuses to listen to Kent and banishes him from the kingdom. Lear, unfortunately, is unable to see how right Kent is and how Kent has a better and clearer vision of the situation. Lear was unable to see that Kent was only trying to help Lear and to do what was best for him. Kent is to Lear, the window to see clearly. He is Lear's eyes that see all. Since Lear banished Kent, he no longer has any way of seeing or understanding, and therefore becomes blinder than ever.

In a parallel subplot, Gloucester also suffers with blindness. Similarily to Lear, Gloucester was unable to see which of his children truly loved him. His blindness led him to believe that Edmund was the more loving of the two, and that Edgar was the evil son plotting to kill him. When in fact, it was the other way around. As Edmund forges a letter, supposedly written by Edgar, saying that Edgar is attempting to kill his father. Gloucester immediately is convinced that the letter was truly written by Edgar and never considered thinking if Edgar would really do such a thing. Unlike Lear, Gloucester's vision clears up when the Duke of Cornwall plucks his eyes out. From that moment, Gloucester began to see more clearly. Using his heart, Gloucester realizes at the end of the play, that Edgar was in fact the good son and that he saved his life while disguised as Poor Tom. I have no way and therefore want no eyes;/I stumbled when I saw (4.1.18-1) was the turning point of Gloucester's life as his vision finally clears up. Gloucester realizes how blind he was and how he lacked insight when he was physically able to see. He then realizes that although he was physically able to see, he knew he couldn't really see and that he doesn't need his eyes to finally see and understand for he can see things more clearly through his mind.

In the end, Lear's vision never cleared up and he fell, dying, to his flaw of blindness and not seeing through more than the physical appearance or through more than what is put and presented in front of him. Gloucester learned that vision is not just through the eyes, that it is rather through the heart and mind. Had Lear learned to see more through his heart, he might have avoided his death.

Blindness is a major flaw in everyone as we all see what we wish to believe. Throughout this play, it is evident that we need to look beyond what we see through our eyes and pay more attention to what is really being presented to us. We must avoid the inevitable, that is, seeing what we should not see, and not seeing what we should see. We must be able to see blinded and not be blinded by sight.

Now the customer has some info to base a decision on. The cost is ten dollars, the windows are dirty, and I could help this guy complete his project. On the second day I was brave and dropped the I'm doing a project pitch. I realized the importance of clear and quick communication. A friend of mine said he would like to work for our company for a day if he could keep an equal share of the profit. I thought it would be neat to have our company's first employee work with me for a day. I learned a valuable lesson in efficiency. After many hours of thought and processing data, our United States government put the actions of September 11th on the shoulders of Osama Bin Laden and his many followers.

Osama Bin Laden and Muhammed Atef are the organizers of an international terrorism organization named Al Qaeda, which was created in 18. When Al Qaeda was founded, it was dedicated to opposing non-Islamic governments (Pike). One of the principal goals of Al Qaeda was to drive United States troops out of Saudi Arabia and elsewhere on the Saudi Arabian peninsula and Somalia (Frontline). Al Qaeda had a command and control structure that included a consultation council, which discussed and approved major undertakings including terrorist operations, such as the attacks on America. Both Atef and bin Laden sat on this council (Pike).

Al Qaeda has been known universally since the year of its establishment, with given rights. Not only did bin Laden and his followers make an attack on the US, but they also have made several previous terrorist acts upon the lives of others in different nations.

Al Qaeda and bin Laden serve as a focal point or umbrella organization for a worldwide network that includes many Sunni Islamic extremist groups such as Egyptian Islamic Jihad, some members of al-Gamaat al-Islamiyya, the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, and the Harakat ul-Mujahidin, many of which could be considered a terrorist group that might help Al Qaeda make its next horrible act (Pike).

Al-Qaida has a worldwide reach, has cells in a number of countries, and is reinforced by its ties to Sunni extremist networks. Bin Laden and his followers reside in Afghanistan, and the group maintains terrorist training camps there. Anyway, back to AYRS - in 18, along came Rob Denney with a serious project. He wanted to build a 8 three bladed wind turbine on a 40 trimaran to take part in the Singlehanded Transatlantic Race in 184. He thought that the boat would be able to sail directly upwind driving a propeller, be easy to control from inside the cabin, and would put less strain on the boat than ordinary sails.

He built up a sponsorship proposal, and had a team of very well qualified and experienced people behind him, with a trimaran hull designed by the late Rod MacAlpine-Downie, but he did not get any money to build it.

Anyway, after his attempts at finding sponsorship for this, he found that it was a better idea to write to the suppliers of materials and offer them free publicity in return for free supplies. So, in 186, he teamed up with Neil Bose from Glasgow University and put a -bladed turbine on his Iroquois catamaran.

This boat is now owned by AYRS ex-Chairman Fred Ball, but it no longer has a wind turbine on it. Unfortunately, this is another boat whose photo does not scan very well.

Then, around 184, there was Jim Wilkinson, who also teamed up with Neil Bose to put an 4 diameter wind turbine on his 6 Sirrocco catamaran, REVELATION. They did a lot of tests on this boat - measuring the boat speed in all different wind speeds and directions. It seems to do about the same speed in any wind direction. This was an ideal cruising boat, requiring very little work from the crew, but it did not go very fast - going fast was not really the point - it was meant to be a low-effort fun boat.

By the time I went for a ride on this boat in 18, he had changed it to three blades, and it did about 6 knots. It had also had a safety guard fitted below the blade path to protect the heads of the passengers - although the blades could not actually have hit the passengers, they imagined that they would get hit, and I think the guard rail was more for their psychological reassurance than for their actual safety. It is a lovely boat, all full of push-button controls and labour-saving devices.

Falcon - Bose - 18/86

Then there was Neil Boses own project at Glasgow University between 18 & 186. I visited this one and had a ride on it back in 186, but unfortunately I did not have a camera with me on that occasion. (Also, it was snowing at the time, so maybe photos would not have come out).

He used a 16 diameter -bladed rotor fitted to a helicopter tail rotor hub on a 18 Blackwater sloop named FALCON. He tried a variety of different blades - twisted, straight, cambered, at different pitch angles, and tried them both as autogiros and driving propellers. The boat sailed at all directions to the wind, including directly upwind. It did not go very fast, but then that was not the idea - it was meant for fuel saving on commercial shipping. It did about 5 kn in a 15 kn wind. He also found gyroscopic force coupling effects - e.g. if a boat travelling upwind yawed to port, this made the bow pitch downwards.

Tanja - Dumpleton - 185

In 18 Owen Dumpleton had a bright idea for generating electricity on a ship and sending it ashore. This ship was NOT supposed to move about. This arrangement has a number of good points, although those blades and that hull are not amongst them. This design has a very low centre of gravity, and correspondingly low centres of rotation and gyroscopic forces. I will be coming back to them later.

And finally amongst the AYRS members of the past publications, there was one of our Italian members, Guiseppe Gigliobianco, who in 186 put this turbine on a cat, coupled to a vertical-axis propeller. He started off using cloth blades, but later switched to semi-rigid wing blades.

There have also been a few people outside AYRS working on wind turbine boats. In the early 180s, when the price of oil was quite high, there was suddenly quite a lot of research being done on wind-powered ships. There were several one-off conferences and seminars held at this time on commercial sail. Very little of this was actually about wind turbine boats, but they generally got a brief mention. Unfortunately, most of this fizzled out when the price of oil came back down in 186.

But Antigone has other feelings for her brother. Despite his waging war against against his native city, Antigone still loves him and will not prove false to him (5). By disobeying Creon, she is a good sister and a good human being. Knowing that the god of death demands these [burial] rites for both [Polyneices and Eteocles] (570), she decides that Creon's orders do not weigh as much as the gods' do. Thus, she pleases the immortals first, proclaiming to be a criminal [against Creon] but a religious one… in order to not cast dishonor on what the gods have honored (84 8). After she is caught and put before Creon, she argues her case unsuccessfully by saying, These are the laws whose penalties I would not incur from the gods, through fear of any man's temper (46 50). But she does earn favor from the gods for her actions because they punish Creon for sentencing her to death (116 117). By being a loyal subject of the more powerful ruler, her death is not in vain.

Creon, acting as both subject and sovereign, succeeds in neither of those positions. Although he rules over the citizens of Thebes, he is subordinate to the gods. Creon forbids any opposition, the man … in authority must be obeyed in small things…. There is nothing worse than disobedience to authority (70 77). Without order and obedience, there will be cities destroyed and homes demolished (78 7). He threatens the death of his guards if they do not find out who buried the body of Polyneices. He also tries to bring in all that are suspected of treason, mainly Ismene, the sister of Antigone. In his mind, Ismene must be involved in Antigone's opposition too. Therefore, both of them must suffer his punishment of death. When he has the obedience of all the citizens, he will be confident that he is a good ruler. However, in trying to do what he thinks is the best for the city, he forgets the fundamental laws of the gods about respecting the dead. His obstinacy makes him stick to his decision until it is too late and his pride makes him refuse to give in to the young. Even upon the advice of the chorus, he does not listen to his son, Haemon, saying, should we that are my age learn wisdom from young men such as he is? (784 785). He finally listens to the respected Teiresias, a blind prophet, who prophesies that Creon will not outlive many cycles more of this swift sun before [he] give in exchange one of [his] own loins bred, a corpse for a corpse (11 115). Teiresias goes on to explain that Creon's sentence of Antigone are acts of violence and in requital the avenging Spirits of Death itself and the gods' Furies shall…lie in ambush for [him], and in their hands [he] shall be taken cruelly (1144 1148). But when he finally decides to abdicate Antigone, it is too late.

Creon is wrong in trying to put down oppositions just to ensure power and order. He makes his decision on the fate of Polyneices' body without consulting the people. As a result, Antigone is not alone in her disagreement with Creon. According to her, there are others disagree but keep their mouths shut for the fear of [Creon] (555-556). But since she is the only one who clearly acts against him, Creon feels threatened. The place that women occupies in society is explicit in Ismene's speech to Antigone, we are only women, not meant in nature to fight against men, and that we are ruled, by those who are stronger (70 7). Thus, when a woman acts against her leader when no male dares to, Creon punishes Antigone more severely. The relationship between ruler and the ruled turns to a competition between the female and the male, I swear I am no man and she the man if she can win this and not pay for it, says Creon (58 5). He goes on to add, We cannot give victory to a woman; if we must accept defeat, let it be from a man; we must not let people say that a woman beat us (71 74). From his point of view, the worst kind of disobedience comes from a woman. Even when Haemon expresses the voice of the people, who mourns for this girl; they think she is dying most wrongly and most undeservedly of all womenkind, for the most glorious acts, Creon does not relent (747 74).

We are happily relieved by the noble and redeeming character of the Earl of Kent as he risks his position to speak the words lesser courtiers fear to speak, urging the King to Reverse thy doom, …And, in thy best consideration, check…This hideous rashness, which enrages the King and results in his banishment. And only with such severe consequence could we see just how humble and beautiful Kent's nobility really is, with his role of servant illustrating true loyalty, caring little for the previous position he once held. For the role of silent protector is enough for the Earl, and sets him apart from others whose motives are largely selfishly motivated.

The Fool succeeds in retaining the one position of the court that the King still respects; his blunt chiding and teasing hold great wisdom, and Lear seems to sense his need for the Fool's insight. Warning of the King's fickle court, he sings, That sir which serves and seeks for gain…And follows but for form…will pack when it begins to rain…And leave thee in the storm. He is quite protective of his nuncle, and risks occasional bristling in spite.

Then there is Edgar, whose transformation is the most impressive of all. As Poor Tom, it is his pure heart that ultimately reaches the King, his compassion for the absolute anguish he witnesses that cracks the shell of the King's perceived isolation. Even the King himself recognizes the essential man before him when he declares, Thou art the thing itself; unaccommodated man is no more…but such a poor, bare, forked animal as thou art. Here the character of an insane man is closely examined, and what is revealed is a definition of true freedom. For in the assignment of sanity, it is the sane that are held captive by their judgment, occupying a large part of their fascination, leaving the insane with unhindered perspective. Edgar suffers all levels of pain, abandonment and betrayal, and in the depths of despair he finds a thing worth fighting for. His wisdom reduces the rampant injustice he endures when he realizes the mind much sufferance doth o'erskip…When grief hath mates, and bearing fellowship. Who better to comfort the bereft save the bereft? And who better to comfort the King than the outcast of a father whose lack of judgment is initiated by another jealous son? Here is a poignant irony--the victim comforting the cause of grief, seeing only another in pain. This would seem to be one of Shakespeare's quintessential themes, and truly a teaching from his own wisdom--that the crucible of unspeakable hurt can render a heart softened, so much so that one recognizes the suffering of another and dares to comfort. Lear makes his persona so fearsome that only the insane or outcast are willing to approach him, seeing him for who he really is, being stripped of their own inhibition.

To the worldly perception that takes only the here and now into consideration, the Tragedy of King Lear would seem only that--tragic. But truly a greater tragedy is averted--paralysis of the spirit. As readers wish for a happier ending, but knowing what humans are capable of, and to what horrors we can stoop, find comfort in the transformation of the few souls who have nothing left to lose. The evildoers suffer the results of their actions when the heartlessness they so willingly dispense returns to them in full force. And even though the loss of good seems unfair, the depths of regret and its inherent wisdom could not be so beautifully represented without it. For through regret a lesson is driven home, and the possibility of repetition is reduced. Examining our faults and our nobility together with the relentless glass of truth, gives us a greater understanding of our shared motivation, leaving the stark and abiding realization that the timeless lesson of loss harbors the greatest power to show us what is most valuable and enduring, and how little it is dependent on the minute rules of men.

Some American Christians go to third world countries and help them build homes and schools to better their country. They teach them about the Christian religion to spread the word. They will also help them farm and around the house. Many religions have been based on Christianity and or Christ such as Judaism and so on. I think Christianity has affected many things we dont even think about. I wouldnt even want to imagine what the world would be like with out Christianity and if Jesus had not influenced us in so many ways. Criminals would be really bad if we didnt have Jesus.

With Christian scientists that dont believe in medical treatment, parents are in trouble for not allowing treatment for dying children. The parents are getting sued for child neglect.

Less and less people are going to church and worshiping their religion and god. They are falling array from the faith. People just get too busy to take time out for church and just dont attend anymore. Its not that they dont care its just they dont have time. It is also harder to get people interested in religion then it used to be and people are becoming more sinful and less disciplined.
