Plato's the Meno is most commonly taken as a book about virtue. In my opinion, the Meno's central issue is teaching. The entire book revolves around Socrates answering Meno's questions about virtue. It is a book that teaches us about teaching, rather than actually answering the question that is presented, Can virtue be taught? Or is it not teachable but the result of practice, or is it neither of these, but men possess it by nature or in some other way? Every time Meno presents a question to Socrates, Socrates presents a question back. The question is never answered throughout the text which lets us know that this is not the purpose of the book.

Meno asks Socrates many questions throughout the text but none of those questions are really answered straight from Socrates. Socrates is constantly presenting Meno with a question to ponder. Meno, in turn, is actually learning from himself. He has all the answers within himself and it is up to Socrates to bring them out of him. As a student I would always get agitated when a teacher wouldn't answer my question directly, but rather would give me something to think about. I never understood why they just couldn't answer my questions, after all, they were my teachers. However, after time, I realized that in order for us to actually learn things, we have to bring them out of ourselves. We have to search our mind for a place where we can get a solution. Every time I see a problem, particularly in math, I find myself searching my thoughts for the answer. I know it is in there somewhere, I just have to stop to find it.

Socrates believed that learning is a process of recollecting the past. In a way, I believe this to be true. Questioning a person is the best way to get them to recollect. They keep searching, and searching, until they find a solution. And if they seem to be fed up with it, you question them with something else. In the Meno Socrates admits, For I myself do not know the answer when I perplex others, but I am more perplexed than anyone when I cause perplexity in others. So now I do not know what virtue is; perhaps you knew before contacting me, but now you are certainly like who does not know. Nevertheless, I want to examine and seek together with you what it may be. This is where he states his belief in learning through recollection. Socrates is showing that he himself does not know the answer, but maybe if they can work together he can gain the answer from Meno. He believes that someone has the answer within them, and maybe Meno is that person. Meno then questions, How will you look for it, Socrates, when you do not know at all what it is? How will you aim to search for something you do not know at all? If you should meet with it, how will you know that this is the thing that you did not know? This statement is one that many of us would ask, after all, it makes sense; How can you find something inside of you when you have no clue at all what it is? But it is Socrates belief that they can find it inside of them. In my opinion, having someone to help you go through it can help to expand your mind and ideas. It can help you to think in different ways.

Teachers are so useful in the way that they help you to explore yourself. I'll never forget my high school psychology teacher, Mr. Jim Farino. He would give us a question every night to go home and think about. Each question would count as a quiz grade so that we would have to do it, otherwise our grade would be effected. He graded it so that our answers weren't tested, but our way of thinking was. He wanted to see that we actually thought about the questions he was asking. He would ask simple questions, such as What is your favorite color and why. They were so simple but they got u to realize why you liked or disliked certain things. In Both paintings portrays someone who she feels she is but is not. These paintings depict her longing to be in another body because suffering she endured from the physical pain of the accident and the mental pain she felt from her marriage. First, a brief biography of Frida Kahlo.

Frida Kahlo had a history of dressing rather plain . She did this because she was

severely teased in her school due to the fact that she had a deformed leg. This deformed

leg was the result of an accident on a bus on September 17, 15.( ) Frida was greatly injured in this accident; she was found to have eleven factures of the right leg and her right foot had been dislocated and crushed and the left shoulder was also dislocated. Her spine and pelvis were also injured. To top off all this her collarbone, two ribs and the pubic bone were all broken. The worst injury of all is an iron rod that had gone through her left hip and came out of her vagina.( ) This injury is what led Frida to feel inadequate as a woman.

All of this pain led Frida to be a very rebellious teenager. While going to school in Mexico City, Frida met Diego Rivera, who she eventually married. After the accident, while bedridden, Frida's mom gave her the first art set she owned. This art set provided her with hours and hours of entertainment, and put forth her great interest in painting.

Frida painted Self Portrait with Hair Cut off after the discovery of Diegos affair with her own sister Cristina( 4 ). Self Portrait with Hair Cut Off is of Frida sitting in a chair in the center of a room with her hair lying all around her and the scissors that did the act in her hand. She is dressed in an oversized mans suit with scissors in her hand. At the top of this painting there are lyrics to a song that read If I ever loved you it was because of your hair, but now that your bald I do not love you anymore. It is rumored that these words were told to Frida by Diego.( 5 ) This painting portrays that she is uncomfortable in her female skin and needs to express herself the way that she really feels. After reading another biography of Frida Kahlo I have learned and now believe a theory about the specific location of the scissors in this painting. The scissors are in the same location as the surgical pincers in the painting The Two Fridas that were connected to the miniature portrait of Diego. This symbolizes that she has cut her ties with Diego.( 6 )

Frida's spirit was definitely not a match for her body. Frida was always a spontaneous person who had so much ambition, yet she was trapped in a body that was not her own. Frida, who wanted to run free was instead trapped in a body cast, her own prison that was the result of the tragic accident I talked about earlier, but in Self Potrrait With Hair Cut Off Frida finally breaks free from another prison, her female body. This painting Frida really let her emotions run. Out of all the paintings that Kahlo did this one gives the most insight into her personal feelings, and relates the most to the quote from Glover.. Fridas personal feelings of femininity are the most present in this painting.( 7 ) Even though she is wearing a mans suit Frida still has her feminine face, high heels, and earrings, and that oh so melancholic look on her face. Frida, who grew up in Mexico during the 0s and 0s, didnt have much rights as a woman. Frida also had a very controlling husband, Diego. I feel that all this animosity led her to feel in adequate as a woman. Frida and Diego, although married, did not remain faithful to each other. In that era, it was more widely accepted for a man to cheat but not a woman. She is wearing her husbands clothes in this painting is that secretly she wants to be Diego. Diego had everything, he was a successful artist, had money, and also a known Playboy, and could get away with practically everything.. Although Frida was successful while she was still alive she just couldnt feel as important as he was. Although she loved him very much, she wanted his freedoms to have all the public affairs, the marriages, and the respect that he had from his fellow peers. Frida also had a thing for women( 8) this would of probably been more accepted if she was a man. Growing up Frida had a history of dressing up as a man. All sorts of feelings led to this painting, the teasing, the heartbreak, feelings of inadequacy, and just not feeling beautiful.

In The Little Deer there is a body of a deer frolicking through the forest with Frida's head. And the odd thing about this painting is that the deer has nine arrows stuck in its side. As in Self Portrait With Hair Cut Off , Frida is not in her own body, she is in the body of a male deer which is indicated by the impressive antlers and the male appendages. This painting is quite disturbing is set in the forest with water in the background and the buck which has magnificent antlers is being hunted. Even though it is a male deer Frida still has her earrings on. This painting was painted after Frida and Diego remarried.

This painting like the previous one really associate with the quote from Glover. Because of this quite obvious that her corpse is not her own but is instead that of a deer. During this time in Fridas life she was suffering from many back and spinal problems. This painting depicts the pain that she felt from her injuries. Most of the arrows are in her backside, the site of her pain, and of her surgeries in the years following her accident. In the last years of her life Frida had to wear twenty-eight different back braces. The arrows in the deer's back were shot by Diego. Although Diego loved her dearly, he was never really true to her thus backstabbing her. Frida probably felt just like a animal being hunted while around Diego. The Look on Fridas face is one of great sadness Im sure before she painted this she was greatly let down by Diego once again. Frida felt like a deer prey to suffering.( ) The trees in the background are all dead and correspond to the number of arrows in the deer's backside. Frida also wrote the word carma which means fate on the bottom of the painting. She did this because like the deer she knows her fate as well which is death.( 10 ) Another factor that contributes to this is what Salomon Grimberg feels that The Little Deer reveals Kahlo's preoccupation with transformation and reincarnation.( 11 )This verifies that Kahlo believed in the Pre-Hispanic tradition of placing a dry branch on a grave to help the dead reach paradise, with resurrection the dry branch

would be transformed into a green branch.( 1 )

Frida Kahlo although one of the greatest artists of all time, really had some issues. Years of torment, and anguish led Kahlo to really depreciate herself. All her pain and suffering really just made her want to be someone else which was portrayed in these two paintings. But then again we would not have such inspiring paintings if it was not for her pain and heartbreak. Being brought up on her paintings I really appreciate her talent. I am happy she at least got to celebrate her first solo art exhibition in Mexico. Which she couldnt miss despite doctors orders of staying in bed Even though in some ways she actually held true to this showing up to the art exhibition in her bed literally. this just proves that Frida had a very strong spirit and was willing to go on even when her body wasnt.

The cameras on stoplights and highways are there to prevent speeding and running of red lights. If any of these two actions are carried out, the camera will snap pictures and the guilty party receives a traffic ticket in the mail. Though these cameras are to be used for a good purpose, they can easily be used to monitor people on the highways, which can raise questions regarding our privacy. There are cameras posted in places that, without a doubt, invade the privacy of the general public. We have heard about, and some may have actually witnessed, cameras inside clubs and office bathrooms, hotel rooms, and store dressing rooms. One might say a camera is needed in a dressing room to prevent shop lifting, but technology is so advanced in this day and age that there are other ways of stopping a shoplifter without requiring you to become someone's personal stripper. One example of such innovative methods available to us is the use of non-removable tags on all articles of clothing that can only be removed by the cashier. If an individual attempts to remove any merchandise from the store, without first going through the cashier, an alarm will sound, raising suspicion on him/herself. Seeing the great intrusion on personal privacy going on today gives me

a preview of what can be expected in the near future. I predict at some point in time the Government will allow the authorities to place cameras inside the homes of suspected wrongdoers and parolees.

Another amazing technological convenience is the navigational system. With the appropriate navigational device, one can navigate to anywhere in the world he needs to go, making it virtually impossible for one to get lost. The Government has an exceptional system called the GPS, Global Positioning System. This is a constellation of satellites that orbit the earth twice a day, transmitting precise time and position (latitude, longitude and altitude) information. With the use of a GPS receiver, users can determine their exact location anywhere on the earth. An example of such a device is a navigational system found in cars.

On December 1, 001 an amazing device was announced by the name of VERICHIP, a miniature radio frequency information device (RFID). This chip is the size of a grain of rice that contains a unique verification number, this can be used in a variety of security, financial, emergency identification, and healthcare applications. The way it works is it's inserted underneath the skin; when the appropriate scanner is briefly passed over the area where the chip is inserted, the

verification number is retrieved. This chip can also be used to monitor physical movement and give location information. These devices can be very convenient for the government authorities as well as for doctors and people with health problems. For example, if every inmate were to be implanted with the VERICHIP, and an inmate decided to break out of jail, authorities would have no problem tracking down such an individual. Another such example would be people with serious health problems getting implanted with this chip, if they were to become unconscious and required medical attention doctors would be able to activate the chip and receive all the necessary information pertaining to the patient's health history, thus administering the necessary treatment, but once again every convenience has it's cost.

In my opinion the future will bring all I mentioned in the previous paragraphs and more. I have pointed out the pros of these devices but there are also cons to be pointed out. The downside to inmates having these chips implanted will be that, after having served there time and are once again released into society to start over their lives, the authorities will still be able to track their every movement. This may not sound like a very bad idea, but it would be a violation of that human being's privacy. The same goes for the people with health problems. Those who agree to be implanted with this chip will also be giving up their privacy.

In conclusion, the movie, Enemy of the State, is an accurate portrayal of what technology will bring. Using the term 'lack of privacy' is an understatement. Future technology and the Government will be the demise of personal privacy, as we know it.

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein can be viewed as the twisted and tragic story of a grueling monster that is nothing but an outcast and threat to society, while the creator Victor Frankenstein cowardly runs from his own selfish mistake. Many look at the gigantic creature as a symbol of evil through out the novel, and even describes his own self as a hideous monster. Some may look at him as something that cares only to destroy human life. However, when studying and understanding his point of view is evidence to me may even leave him the victim. My two prime suspects are Victor Frankenstein and society as a whole. They are to blame for all the evil that is portrayed in the monsters actions.

After creating such an unusual and unique character, Victor takes no responsibility for it. The monster is completely helpless and has only a small idea about his identity. Unlike God and most parents Dr. Frankenstein brought it into the world with a spark and taught it nothing about survival or the difference between right and wrong. This leaves him very confused when experiencing internal feelings and gives him no choice but to act upon those feelings naturally. With a primitive and uneducated mindset the monster begins to interact with society. His horrid appearance and enormous size, its rejection from society, and the abandonment by his only creator and guardian whom is also disgusted by its looks; hurts the monster deeply and it begins to get very lonely and miserable. At this point he also begins to feel anger towards Victor. He says here, Unfeeling, heartless creator! you had endowed me with perceptions and passions, and then cast me abroad an object for the scorn and horror of mankind.(Page 84) After looking in the mirror he realizes how ugly he is and is disgusted at his own image. Thus far, he has only one link to the world, which is Dr. Frankenstein.

'overseer of the south land' and 'the King's Son of Kush'. The Viceroy was in charge of the

administration and resource collection that came out of Nubia. Amenhotep came to the throne

with a great advantage, this being the fact that all battles had already been won for him and all

treaties and alliances had been set in place. All he had to do was maintain what he had already

gained. He exercised his control over Nubia through the re-employment of strategies and

policies that were previously used before him by his forefathers. This was backed up by taking

year of his rule. Its purpose was to suppress rebellion and it is depicted on reliefs in a small

temple at Beit el Wali in the south of Nubia. He also continued to Egyptianise Nubia through the

construction of temples to promote the worship of Egyptian god's.

In conclusion, it can be said that there is no doubt that the Pharaohs of this period exercised

There are two main explanations of how organisms learn. The

first explanation is known as classical conditioning. The second

becomes a conditioned stimulus.

Classical conditioning can be exemplified in the home,

are the unconditioned stimulus, the smell is the conditioned

between classical and operant conditioning. First, the operant

response has to occur completely spontaneously. In classical

In operant conditioning the response is delivered by the organism

which then awaits the consequences. Second, in classical

conditioning the conditioned response is usually a very well-

defined muscular movement or glandular response (44). In

operant conditioning the response is a set of actions that bring

about an essentially equal result. Third, in classical

conditioning reinforcement is dictated by the scientist or

instructor. In operant conditioning reinforcement is dictated by

the organism (45).

Edward L. Thorndike was the first person to formally address

the affects of reward and punishment in learning. He came up

with the positive law of effect which stated that when a behavior

is rewarded that behavior will be more likely to be repeated

(Myers 6). F. B. Skinner later elaborated on this theory.

Skinner observed there are different types of operant

conditioning. There is punishment which decreases the

The Man Who Made Life Easier

Henry Ford was one of the greatest pioneers of American History. He created the Model-T automobile and invented the fast paced assembly line. Henry was born on July 0, 186 in Dearborn, Michigan in the upstairs bedroom of a farmhouse where he lived. He was the first of six children. He lived with his mother, Mary Litogot Ford, and his father, William Ford, who emigrated from Ireland in 1847.

He had a typical childhood, with many chores to do on the farm such as tending animals, orchards, vegetable gardens, and sowing and reaping the crops. Henry never liked to do that kind of work, because it was boring to him. The only type of farm work he was interested in was work with The McCormick Mechanical Reaper. This machine could do the work of ten men all at one time. Ford was the kind of boy who would like to take things apart and put them all back together again. Machines and tools were toys to him while other boys were interested in sports. He knew what he wasted to do with his life right away, and that was to be a mechanic. Ford spent his spare time reading all about gas engines. Henry started out by taking watches apart and putting them back together again. Many people started bringing their broken watches and clocks to him to fix.

When Henry was thirteen, he had lost his mother Mary. She was very weak and gave birth to her eighth child. The child ended up dieing and put his mother in a worse situation with her strength. Mary couldn't regain her strength and died twelve days after giving the birth. Henry was very down and depressed and he felt like he did something wrong. He took the blame upon him for a while and stayed to himself for man months.

At the age of fifteen, Henry was determined to make something that ran on wheels, and didn't require much hard work. He was uneducated because he didn't like school, and never passed eighth grade. He ended up working various jobs where there was machinery. Ford built a machine shop, called the Edison Illuminating Company and repaired steam engines for hard working farmers.

One of Henry's creations was that he named the Quadra Cycle. The Quadra Cycle consisted of a box shape body on four bicycle wheels. It had no brakes, but still got people from point A to point B. On a rainy, Thursday night, June 4, 186, he started it up and drove his first horseless carriage. It was the sixth American built, gas-powered car. The importance of the Quadra Cycle was that it got people from place to place a lot faster that walking. People had to travel long ways to get places like the doctor, grocery store to get food they needed and much more. With this invention, families received their needs a lot quicker, and life was moving much faster. The Quadra Cycle may have been a great invention, but Henry wanted to make people's lives even easier. He wanted to design a car that was dependable, easy to repair, that would last a long time, and inexpensive for people to buy.

During the year of 10, Ford launched the Ford Motor Company with a capital of one hundred thousand dollars, which twenty-eight thousand dollars was given in cash. Ford was determined enough to introduce the Model-T, which was nicknamed the Tin Lizzie, in 108. He had made some racing cars earlier, but not to sell. The Model-T ran on a four cylinder, twenty horsepower engine. This was considered a fast car back then compared to walking or peddling on a bicycle. The Model-T came with three colors red for the body, and gray and green for the remaining parts. Henry sold approximately about six hundred and fifty of them in 10. In 114, the car was only available in the color black but then returned to color in 16. At this time, the Model-T made him the most successful businessman. The Model-T was considered the Everyman's car, because everyone was interested in buying one.

In 108, automobiles were considered only for the wealthy. Ford built the largest automobile plant in the world, and invented the assembly line in 11. The assembly line was a system of manufacturing in which each worker performs a specialized operation and his or her own station. The product is them moved to the person at the next station on a conveyer belt. This was one of the ways mass production came about, and it made the cars much cheaper to produce. The Model-T was eventually produced on the assembly line in 11. It only took ninety minutes to put the body together the body in 11. The Ford Motor Company produced about eight thousand cars a day.

Prices of the Model-T dropped dramatically once the assembly line was introduced. It went from nine hundred and fifty dollars, in 10, to only four hundred and ninety dollars in 11. Ford paid his workers five dollars or more per day for working eight hours, which was double the amount, paid to an average worker anywhere. Most laborers earned two dollars and fifty cents for twelve hours of work. There was one problem with the amount of earnings the employees made when working in the factory. Many people stood outside the factory begging to get a job there because they paid so well. Henry had hired more than six thousand people, paying them the same amount of money. Since not everyone could get employed there, civilians started to rebel because of the jealousy, and fights broke out in the streets outside. By 140, Henry Ford had made over one billion dollars in the business, and became one of the richest men in the world.

Wyatt Earp is best known as the fearless frontier lawman of Wichita and

Los Angeles and Prescott, Arizona. In 1868, Wyatt went to work for the Union

Pacific Railroad in Wyoming, where he was able to save some money. Wyatt

1870, he traveled to Illinois, then to Oklahoma and Kansas City. Wyatt married in

1870, but after the sudden death of his new bride, he drifted the Indian Territory

murder of the local sheriff, Wyatt was given the job by the mayor. However, he

In 1874, Wyatt was named deputy marshal of Wichita, Kansas. After

arresting a rich Texan named Abel Shanghai Pierce, as well as several of

Mannen Clements, and the cowboys left. It was the last time Wichita experienced

at the famous Long Branch Saloon. It was here he met and became lifelong

friends with Bat Masterson and Doc Holliday. Wyatt was more intelligent than

courage,The second was his sterling loyalty,The third was his affection for

Wyatt. Wyatt agreed to become marshal, and he hired his brother Morgan as his

deputy. Wyatts first act was to draw a line across the town and forbid guns,

except those carried by lawmen, north of that line. Farmers and cowboys had to

check their weapons before entering the town. Wyatt and his men made many

arrests each day. Dodge boomed with a roar that split the nation's ears and still

After eight months, Wyatt had tamed Dodge City, and he began to get

restless. He traveled to Deadwood City in the Dakotas, where he sold wood to

the miners. Wyatt pocketed more than $5,000, and then headed to Cheyenne,

Wyoming. In Cheyenne, a telegram was waiting that asked him to return to

Dodge City. He was again named marshal, and his brothers Virgil and Morgan

worked as his deputies. Several Texan cowboys tried to kill Wyatt, but they were

not successful.

Leaving Dodge City with his second wife in 1878, Wyatt traveled to New

Mexico and California, working for a time as a Wells Fargo agent. In 187 he

assembled with his brothers and their wives in the new silver mining town of

Tombstone, Arizona. The grimly humorous phrase about our town was that

Tombstone had 'a man for breakfast every morning.' Josephine Sahra Marcus,

a popular outlaw named Frank Stilwell. After Stilwell was released on bail, a fight

between Stilwells friend Tom McLaury and Morgan Earp was proposed. The fight

was refused by Morgan, but a fierce rivalry had developed.

On October 6, 1881, a feud that had developed between the Earp

brothers and a gang led by Ike Clanton culminated in the most celebrated

gunfight in western folklore, the Gunfight at the OK Corral. The McLaurys and

Clantons met near the OK Corral. The Earps heard that they wanted to fight and

realized a showdown was inevitable. Wyatt, Virgil, and Morgan Earp, along with

Doc Holliday headed to the intersection of Third Street and Fremont Street,

which was less than a block from OK Corral. The shooting started when Billy

Clanton and Frank McLaury cocked their pistols. The battle lasted less than a

minute, and Tom and Frank McLaury, as well as Billy Clanton, were killed. For

my handling of the situation at Tombstone, I have no regrets. Were it to be done

After a month-long trial, it was determined they acted within the law. In March

188, Ike Clanton attempted to kill Wyatt and Morgan while they were playing

pool. Morganwas killed, and Wyatt vowed revenge. He quickly found and killed

Frank Stilwell, andthen headed out to find the remaining killers. However, Wyatt

was being tracked by Sheriff Behan, who wanted to arrest him.

After being accused of these murders, Wyatt, Josie and Doc Holliday fled

Arizona to Colorado. and made money playing cards while making the rounds of

western mining camps over the next few years. They turned up in Coeur d

Alene, Idaho and in 1886, settled briefly in booming San Diego, where Wyatt

gambled and invested in real estate and saloons.

From San Diego, Wyatt moved to San Jose and started a race horse farm.

In 187 Wyatt and Josie headed for Nome Alaska where they operated a saloon

during the height of the Alaska Gold Rush. They returned to the states in 101

with an estimated $80,000 and immediately headed for the gold strike in

Tonopah, Nevada, where his saloon, gambling and mining interests once again

proved profitable.

Thereafter, Wyatt took up prospecting in earnest, staking claims just

Ourside Death Valley and elsewhere in the Mojave Desert. In 106 he discovered

several veins that contained gold and copper near Vidal, California on the

Colorado River and filed numerous claims there at the base of the Whipple

Mountains.Wyatt spent the winters of his final years working these claims in the

Mojave Desert and living with Josie in their Vidal cottage. He and Josie

summered in Los Angeles, where they befriended early Hollywood actors and

lived off real estate and mining investments.

On Jan. 1, 1 Wyatt Earp died in Los Angeles at the age of 80.

Cowboy actors Tom Mix and William S. Hart were among his pallbearers. Wyatts

cremated ashes were buried in Josies family plot in Colma, California, just south

of San Francisco. When Josie died in 144 at the age of 75, she was buried

there beside him.

Among his enduring legacies as frontiersman, lawman, gambler and

prospector, a post office near his Mojave Desert mining claims along the

Colorado River on Route 6 bears the name -- Earp, California 4.

Brave New World Essay

In the novel Brave New World, Mustopha Mond can be considered the most admirable character. His nobility can be seen in his education, his self-sacrifices, and by comparing him to the character of John the Savage. In the world that the novel is set in, being noble and admirable is something that is not even comprehended, let alone practised and upheld. Mustopha Mond, in comparison to the other characters, maintains a sense of honour, while living in a society that seeks everything but the characteristics a noble character requires. This sets him apart from the world he grew up in, and the world he is currently running.

The education of Mustopha Mond helped to create his admirable character. His knowledge stretches beyond the average citizen in Brave New World, so much so that he is one of the few in this world who can educate on the way life used to be. While teaching older student he makes them realize how important keeping knowledge from society is, and he admits to them, That is why you are taught no history…but now the time has come (pg. 8) He discusses things that the people in that society don't understand. They label all subjects that deal with a family as smut, because they don't understand it as anything else. Mustopha Mond on the other hand, does understand. His knowledge also spreads to the carefully controlled area of science. Mustopha Mond admits to Josh the Savage Science is dangerous; we have to keep it carefully chained and muzzled. (pg. 181) The controller admitted that for the world he was living in, in regards to science he was too good. However, instead of selfishly leaving society and continuing on with his research, he decided to try to benefit the lives of others. He admits that Happiness is a hard master, particularly other peoples happiness but he then admits that he could not give up his duty, even if that means leaving something he likes. He wants to save people, because he knows that science can be a menace. In the novel, a Nine Years War is mentioned. He asks What's the point of truth, or beauty, or knowledge when anthrax bombs are popping all around you? That was when science first began to be controlled. (pg. 18) Mustopha Mond goes along with that thought, and realises that if he can help to control science, he can keep the world from unhappiness. Because of his knowledge of science, and his willingness to protect others from the threat it holds, he can be considered as a noble man.

Mustopha Mond sacrifices his own self-interests and desires for the sake of others. Instead of continuing on in the field he loves, and going to an island to research Physics, he sacrificed for the sake of his society. He admits it to John the Savage, and Helmholtz, when he tells them That's how I paid. By choosing to serve happiness. Other peoples-not mine (pg. 18) He realised in life that happiness has got to be paid for. Laying down what he enjoys to give other people happiness makes him a nobler person than many in our society, therefore even more so in the society of Brave New World. Mustopha Mond, as a person, naturally enjoys beauty in life. He finds religion, and God beautiful, even going as far as to admit that they have always had a great interest in me, (pg. 185) but he is willing to put God in the safe and Ford on the shelves (pg. 185) for the sake of stability and order.

By comparing Mustopha Mond and John the Savage, the admirable character of Mustopha Mond is revealed. John has read books by Shakespeare, giving him wisdom outside the general knowledge of civilisation, however, he doesn't possess the wide range of wisdom Mustopha Mond has. John realises Mustopha Mond knows about God, and wonders But if you know about God, why don't you tell them? (pg. 185) He doesn't realise what harm that would cause, meanwhile Mustopha Mond does. John, as a person, is always seeking to do good, however he can never quite get things right. He casts himself out of society, and purposely put himself through physical pain, attempting to make him better. Oh, forgive me! Oh, make me pure! Oh, help me to be good! (pg. 15) Mustopha Mond on the other hand, made conscious, physical effort to do good by staying in the society, controlling it, running it, and attempting to make everyone as happy as they can be. John's idea of being good is denying himself pleasure. Mustopha Mond's idea of being good is attempting to give everyone else pleasure. His thought is so selfless, and his actions are so selfless, that he can be proven as being admirable, and even noble.

Mustopha Mond holds little bitterness towards the world he had to leave behind, the sacrifices he has to make, and the fact that the desires he has must come second to the overall happiness of society. He is proud of the decision he made to turn down the chance to go to an island, and instead, maintain order and peace, and protect people from unhappiness and from being hurt. Every now and then, he thinks, What fun it would be…if one didn't have to think about happiness (pg. 144) but there seems to be no regret in the choices he has made. In conclusion, because of his education, his self-sacrifices, and his comparison to John the Savage, Mustopha Mond can be proven as the noblest character in the novel, and more then likely the most admirable person that has lived in Brave New World.
