The Great Depression

Two presidents, Herbert Hoover and Franklin D. Roosevelt, were unfortunately faced with the greatest economic plummet of their times. The bedlam over speculation caused stock prices to soar, causing the stock market to take a turn for the worst. Businesses collapsed and savings were completely expunged. Unemployment soon reached a peak of 1 million people.

Although orphaned by the young age of 10, Herbert Hoover did not let the tragic obstacle stop him from being successful. He went on to graduate from the prestigious Stanford University and when the war broke out in Europe, he became involved in high-level relief work, supervising the distributing of food and supplies to the people of Belgium and northern France. These acts of kindness earned him the title of the U.S food administrator. He moved up to Secretary for Commerce which got him noticed by the public as the leader of America's confident business community. In 18, he became president. The Great Depression suddenly pounced upon the country, leaving Hoover with no option, but to take action. Although Hoover was always striving for individualism and self help, he was not merely going to sit back and watch the country fall. He exhorted bankers, businessmen, state governments and others to voluntarily stabilize credit, keep wages up and give to charitable enterprises. In 1, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation was created to send loans to banks, railroads and insurance companies. Home loan banks were set up to aid home owners meeting mortgages, and the government also sent money to drought-stricken farmers. Although Hoover did not exactly stick to his instincts on individualism, he definitely would never use the national government for direct relief work. He would simply not allow for federal handouts, because he believed it would lead to a dependency of citizens upon state. In 1, he was again nominated by the Republicans but was severely defeated by Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Born to a wealthy landowner who was vice president of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad, Franklin Delano Roosevelt had a very enjoyable childhood. He was participant in tennis, polo, yachting, and riding to hounds. Amongst all of his fun activities, he was reared with a sense of civic responsibility. His parents set him with patrician values and his father had some root in Democratic politics. Another political influence Franklin had was his fifth cousin, Teddy Roosevelt, whom he deeply admired. After he graduated from Harvard, he began to robustly campaign to become a Democratic state senator which sent Franklin's name to the ears of the public. In 11, he was stricken by the viral disease of polio. He was paralyzed from the waist down and decided to retire for two years in which he endured great physical and emotional distress. When he realized that his unfortunate condition was permanent, he forced himself to walk, relying on leg braces and two canes. Although in the beginning he was discouraged, in the end, his battle with polio deepened and strengthened his character. Never once did he ask for sympathy and he knew just how to hide his pain. He was stronger than he ever had been. With his new outlook on life, he returned to politics. The Depression reached its all time low in the period between his election and inauguration. When he was elected into presidency, he took the role as Pioneer of the New Deal. Not only did he collect ideas from his allies, he branched out to professors, economists, and lawyers in the planning to replace the free market of classical economics. He had plans to bring relief to the most disadvantaged members of society. He set up new measures to regulate securities and insurance and created numerous acts to employ the unemployed. Although few of his many acts to help the people and the economy were declared unconstitutional, he launched his Second New Deal with goals to protect union rights and set up old age insurance. He introduced Fireside chats that reassured millions and later served two more terms in presidency.

This great nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper…the only thing we have to fear is fear itself, were the famous, reassuring words of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Hoover and Roosevelt stepped up to the crisis with their heads held high and charged into it with confidence in their country. They knew America would hold strong and work together to overcome this hardship of the economy. Hoover started the recovery from the massive depression and Roosevelt brought up the tail end. He supplied six million unemployed with jobs, restored faith in the economy and the Democratic party was now the natural home to man ethnic groups. These two men could have merely ran away with their tails tucked between their legs, but they held strong, and sealed the bond holding America together.

German Foreign Policy 1870 - 114.

During the 44 year period between 1870 and 114 Germany pursued one

set of foreign policies under Bismarck and another under William II.

Bismarck, the man who shaped the newly united Germany, controlled

German foreign policy until 180 and was heavily influenced in his

decisions on foreign policy to keep the peace in Europe and thereby

guarantee the security of Germany.

For example one of the main thrust of Bismarck's foreign policy was to

ensure that France had no allies and was kept isolated. Bismarck

evidently pursued this goal to prevent a repeat of the Franco - Prussian

war (something Bismarck believed was contrary to German interests) and

did his best to try to divert ...the fiery steed of French ambition... away

from their territorial losses in Alsace and Lorraine. Bismarck's desire to

keep the peace in Europe was also part of his attempt to keep France

isolated; A crisis could polarise the Great Powers and France could gain

an ally. In constructing a complex web of secret agreements and

alliances Bismarck bound virtually the whole of Europe together, -

excluding France and Germany - another way of securing European

peace and therefore Germany's security. Bismarck's foreign policy was

never 100% consistent; he was perfectly prepared to change his mind to

suit the circumstances or a change in his power base at home.

By 180 Bismarck's system of alliances and agreements was falling apart

and Bismarck fell from office. He succeeded in keeping Germany free

from conflict that would threaten her newly established unity. This was

his main motivating force in terms of German foreign policy.

After Bismarck left Germanys political scene the power vacuum was

filled, not by his successor as chancellor but by William II, who was

determined to take a much greater part in the governing of Germany.

The Kaiser saw himself as an international statesman, something he

wasn't, and his diplomatic blunderings often produced an effect opposite

to the one intended. William II did not seem to recognise the importance

of keeping on good terms with Russia and only years after Bismarck's

departure from office, Germany had turned down a Russian offer to

renew the re-insurance treaty and this resulted in an alliance between

Russia and France, something blatantly contrary to German interests.

Although there was a brief improvement in relations with Britain on the

whole the Kaiser seemed to have a knack for creating international

tension and souring relations with the other European powers - bar those

in the Triple alliance. The Kaiser seemed incapable of recognising any

threat to Germany and his foreign policy appears to have been mainly

motivated by a desire to see Germany (and himself) as a leading figure

on the world stage. The Kaiser's mistakes were largely unintentional and

he did try to rectify the mistake of abandoning Russia as an ally in 105,

but in general the Kaiser was a shadow of Bismarck as a statesman and

could not halt Germany's slide into a pan-European war.

Under Bismarck it can be said that Germany's foreign policy was

motivated almost entirely by a the need to preserve the new nation state

of Germany. However under William II Germany made more enemies

than friends in Europe and he led Germany into a war that was disastrous

for her. So it can be said that Germany's foreign policy between 1870 -

114 was not influenced solely by the need to preserve the new nation

state.

Pharmacia has many different types of organizational cultures. James Quick (1) argued that culture begins with the values and beliefs that people hold. (p. 57) Pharmacia needs organization to keep their operation running smoothly.

Over the years Pharmacia's organizational culture has changed in many ways. In the year of 1 Upjohn which then Monsanto and Pharmacia had merged turning the name to Pharmacia bought out Monsanto. Pharmacia had received its name in June of 000. The reason that Monsanto and Upjohn merged was because Monsanto was in a deep financial crisis. Once the merger took place the company decided to reorganize the company. Many employees were loosing jobs due to the merger.

Since the merger Pharmacia is currently bringing in contract employees for the first ninety days on a trial basis. This can be a good thing or it can be bad. One of the good ways to look at being a contract employee is to see if you really like working for the company. Many employers are doing this to see if the employee will be a good fit for the company. On the other hand Pharmacia has been abusing contract employees because employees start a position with high aspirations and expectations of becoming a permanent. In the past at the company that I work for, employees have been contractors for months at a time without getting a chance of becoming permanent. Currently that rule has changed to when you are a contract employee longer than three months Pharmacia must either decide to keep the employee permanent or end your contract.

This part of this organizational culture is inclusive. I am pretty fortunate for the job I have and the working condition that I work in. Because I am contract the company treats me as a regular employee. Everyone that I work with is friendly and is willing to help you with whatever task that needs to be done. You are able to work without someone breathing over your neck and be willing to work independently as long as you get your job done. No need to worry about getting an earful from your boss. In some cases if your not meeting up to your bosses expectations you have to reason with him or her. Let them hear you side of the story. Then ask what their expectations should be. In my working environment I feel that people interact on a professional level at Pharmacia. But you are still able to have fun at what you do. You can be your self and feel comfortable while you are working and not feel inferior. This is a professional environment and I do not have to worry about your fellow coworkers spreading roomers around the office.

The employee and employer relationship seems to be a pretty relaxed environment. You are able to feel comfortable around upper management. I can say what is on my mind without the fear of losing my job. My bosses are pretty diverse when it comes to new ideas. Any time I make a suggestion they are always up to listen. Sometimes they use my idea and sometimes they do not.

Pharmacia has to be the most enjoyable company to work for. Because when the company holds company functions, the contract employees are able to attend them as well. Contract employees do not have to feel that they are the minority. People that I work with are friendly and you feel uncomfortable. Everyone can be there self's and work in a relaxed working environment. You are able to make mistakes without getting a prison sentence. I have had many jobs and I have found that this has been the most rewarding job I have ever had. I am able to come to work to do my job without anyone breathing over my neck and snooping in my business.

Every work place has something that is not so pleasant about the working environment. For instance I do not enjoy getting to work late which causes me to not find a parking spot. When I have a million things to do theirs people that I assist that expect me to take care of their needs before anyone else that was first priority? Noticing over the past few months I've realized that I had to change my way of thinking because I thought that I could go in their and make the company know my way of things and that wasn't the case. Organizational culture has not really affected my work. Because by the way Pharmacia's structure is it's taught me to be better worker. Everyone has their own way of doing things and it is hard to go into a company and tell them that they need to change some things. People hate change because their comfortable with the way things has been. When one little change would occur the company thinks that it would be a bad idea for the company. In order to have companies be successful they have to have been diverse. More and more companies should listen to their employees about new ideas to make the company a better place to work.

Analyse the dramatic contribution of Mercutio in shakespears

Romeo and Juliet by refering to the play and the two film versions

In the play Mercutio is Romeos kingsman which means, related and a friend, also a courtier. The first time we meet Mercutio is in act 1 scene 4.He is in a street outside the Capulets Mansion, he is playing the fool but becomes serious when the subject of dreams comes up. Mercutio then starts talking about Queen Mab, the creator of dreams and nightmares

She is the faries midwife, and she comes

in a shape no bigger than an agate-stone.

In this speech Mercutio gets carried away easily as Romeo has to stop him

Peace, peace Mercutio, peace. He is very excitable and morbid as he talks of death alot. For example

Sometimes she driveth ore a soldiers neck,

and then dreams he of cutting foreign throats.

The next time we meet Mercutio is in Act scene 1, outside the Capulets Mansion, with Benvolio looking for Romeo. They cant find him, and while they are looking for him, they make sexual innuendos about Romeos love for Rosoline. For example

An open-arse, thou a pop rin pear Mercutio is playing on words which could have two meanings while he says this. For example he says

Circlewhich could mean magic circle of vigina. All of this shows us that Mercutio doesnt believe in love only in sex.

Then we meet him in Act Scene 4 we encounter him in the streets of Verona with Benvolio the day after the party.Mercutio and Benvolio are joking around about Romeos obsession with Rosoline. They dont realise he has spent most the night on Juliets balcony.Prior to this scene Tybolt has challenged Romeo to a duel. Benvolio and Mercutio argue over if he will accept.Mercutio shows us that he respects Tybolt

More than prince of cats.O,hes the courageous captain of compliments. In this scene the Nurse enters and Mercutio mocks the Nurse about her age and looks. For example

Farewell ancient lady.In this scene Mercutio is his normal self witty and funny.

We last see Mercutio in the play in Act Scene1, he is in a public place in a verona street, when he gets confronted by Tybolt. Benvolio tries to warn Mercutio that Tybolt is around, for example he says

I pray thee, good Mercutio, lets retire

The day is hot, the Capulets are abroad When he says this he shows us that he is afraid.Mercutio has none of it, and says he is not afraid, then Tybolt comes along and confronts him about Romeo.Mercutio is looking for a fight with Tybolt and when Romeo comes along it makes it heated.Romeo tries to make friends with Tybolt as they are now family because Romeo has just married Juliet in secret. He says

And so, good Capulet, which name i tender as dearly as mine own, be satisfied.Mercutio doesnt like seeing Romeo be made a fool of as Tybolt hits him and beats him in front of everyone. Mercutio then strikes Tybolt and Romeo tries to stop the fighting by getting in between the two. Tybolt stabs Mercutio under Romeos arm and no one sees. When Tybolt realizes what hes done he leaves. Mercutio is dying and because of his reputation of being a jocker no one believes him, they think hes playing the fool. When they realize what has happened it is to late, just before he dies he says

A plague aboth your houses. What he means when he says this is, look what your houses have done, look what your families hatred has done, also that it is there fault he is going to die.

In the film Baz Luhrman wrote, Mercutio, as usual, makes a big entrance he is out going, lively and a very changeable character. In Zeferellis version he is much more serious, for example, when the speech of Queen Mab came up he was very serious and in Baz Luhrmans he was on drugs and he got carried away, and not very serious. The way Mercutio is betrayed in Baz Luhrmans play just before the party at the Capulets mansion, he dressed up like a drag queen, and in Zeferellis play all he has is a mask.Of both versions compared together i would say that Baz Luhrmans play is much more imaginative and Zeferellis play makes Mercutio seem more mature and not as out going.

The importants that Mercutio has to the the play,is how much entertainment he adds, he is the only source of entertainment. For example

Good Peter,to hide her face, for her fans the fairer face.making puns about the nurse and her looks. As soon as he dies the play gets very serious, he is the only one that jokes around and encourages others to, and makes bawdy jokes about women. He adds to the plays plot more than any character. For example if he hadnt of taken Romeo to the party he

wouldnt of met Juliet or got challenged by Tybolt. Mercutio then got killed because of what led from the challenge and the hatred Tybolt held for Romeo after that night of the party.Romeo then seeked revenge and killed Tybolt getting himself banished from Verona. That ended up leading to Romeos death and Juliets death which ended the two family hatred for each other.

All living things are made up of DNA. DNA is the blueprint for all the characteristics that appear in a living thing. Each DNA is made up of parts, called genes, that each hold specific instructions that make each living thing unique. The genes are what determine the characteristics that make each living thing. Of course, genes are not perfect. This topic has recently become a very popular one among food producers and farmers. For ages, farmers have been thinking of ways to make their crops grow better and healthier. The use of pesticides was started for this reason. Until recently, pesticides and preservatives were the only way for farmers to deliver farm-fresh produce to the public. That's where the genes and DNA came in.

Scientists have recently figured out a way to change the function or alter the genes of certain crops. By injecting crops with enzymes or genes of other living specimens, scientists can change the actual characteristics of the crops. In other words, they can cut out undesired characteristics or bring about new ones in the foods. This process of gene/DNA-alteration is called biotechnology. It is called biotechnology because it is the process of using technology to improve nature. The most famous biotech crop is the Flavr Savr Tomato. Tomatoes have a relatively soft outer skin, which makes them bruise and damage easily. With the Flavr Savr, scientists engineered the new tomato plants in a way that made them have a tougher outer skin. This made them easier to transport and store.

Scientists have also worked with other crops to improve them. Corn, rice, and soybeans have become very important biotech crops. Corn that won't be eaten by pests and can be grown year round would benefit farmers and the public alike. With increased amounts of product and more sales, the price of corn would go down. Rice that can be enriched with vitamins and minerals would help children in third-world countries. The children would eat the rice, but get the benefits of eating a supply of all their necessary nutrients. There are many benefits to biotechnology and genetically modifying foods (these foods are sometimes called GMO). But, there are still many opponents to this new way of growing food.

People fear that bio engineered food is not safe, despite claims by the United Stated Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that say they are. The FDA claims that methods of altering crops have been in existence for hundreds of years. They say that farmers have always crossbred and propagated plants to achieve desired results. The FDA says that these foods now are no different and are safe to eat. Still, some people are not convinced. There is strong opposition to these foods, both in the United States and in Europe. Some companies that use GMO products use GMO produce that has been treated with antibiotics. Consumers fear that increased use of antibiotics will cause them to develop antibiotic resistance. Not only that, but the diseases for which the antibiotics are meant might also develop resistance to them. If this were to happen, there could be major problems in the future.

Many groups and organizations have formed to inform the public of the risks of GMO foods. Besides the antibiotic resistance, people also fear allergies from GMO foods. Enzymes are proteins, and proteins are what people who have food allergies are usually allergic to. If proteins that trigger allergies are used in products that don't usually contain them, there could be problems. The FDA has established a law that forces companies that produce such foods to warn the public. They must label their foods and state that they contain common allergy trigger proteins. But the FDA does not require other GMO foods to be labeled. This has many people very angry. People who oppose GMO foods say that they want to know what they are eating, and that all GMO foods should clearly be labeled as such. Personally, I am against GMO foods. I believe that what is natural should remain that way, and should not be fooled around with, especially by humans. Nature is so vast and so cleverly developed that we cannot compare to it at all.

The development of biotechnology has had a huge impact on humankind. Soon, the way we eat may be totally changed. Maybe scientists will be able to pack the necessary nutrients of a well-balanced daily diet into one simple food. Or maybe foods will become a thing of the past. Soon, with the help of biotechnology, we may not be eating food at all. We might just swallow a pill in the morning and survive on it all day. There are both benefits and risks to biotechnology. Changing things that are natural will make them less and less that. But if changing them will make life better, then they should be pursued. There are always two sides to every story, and there is never one that is truly correct.

Summary

The scene takes place in Juliet's room and into another jungle themed room. Juliet's room was very bright and the other room is darker. The beginning of the scene stars Romeo and Juliet in their last moments together until dawn, as they had spent their night together. The nurse signals that Lady Capulet is coming. Juliet is informed about her planned marriage to Paris, and Juliet condemns it. Her father comes to find that Juliet is reluctant. At seeing this, he becomes enraged, and they get into a heated fight. In the end, Juliet has the nurse, her mom, and her dad taking one side against her wishes. The scene's purpose in the play is the scene shows how Capulet no longer respects his daughter's wishes, but rather makes a contract with Paris about her future, without her consent. Juliet in turn is also turning away. She is alienated from her family and she sees another point of view. Juliet also feels betrayed by the fact that her mother, and even her nurse, oppose her wishes to stay clear of Paris's marriage. Crucial moments for communicating the purpose of the play are the end of the scene, when Juliet begs her mother and her nurse to help her, and they turn her away. This is a turning point in which Juliet is no longer supported by her family. The point where her father explains to her that she must live in the real world, for Juliet is assumed to live in her protected own little world. He makes it clear that her presence in the house is only tolerated with her marriage to Paris.

Imagery

Eros/Thanatos

~The background in the scene will have a bed with a black cover symbolizing death, and a while heart pillow, symbolizing love. This will be a symbolic way of presenting love and death in direct contrast to each other.

Fate/Foreshadowing

~When Romeo jokes about the true sadness he would have when Juliet was a ghost, he is truly speaking plainly about his haunting feelings of Juliet's death, inevitably causing him to commit suicide. This is foreshadowing of their fate as ghosts in death.

~When Juliet is speaking to her mother and she begs that Romeo die painlessly, it is ironic that fate takes a turn and causes him to die a most painful death.

~When Juliet objects to marrying Paris, she states Over my dead body! This in modern English means never. In the scene it is a symbol of the true death of Juliet, prior to her marriage to Paris.

~When Capulet and Juliet argue, Capulet says, Don't talk back to me and dare to turn your back on me! It is interesting that due to these lines of turning her back on him, she literally does this later on. Juliet kills herself, and alienates herself from her family. This would be foreshadowing her alienation.

~Lady Capulet says, You only live to die anyway. This is important because it is symbolic of the life and death cycle in this story. The ending of the story consists of suicide and deaths. She doesn't see the gravity in her words, but Lady Capulet is stating the fate in the story, death.

~Juliet says that this fight and her separation from Romeo makes it the Worst day of her life. And she even says, I'm going to die! These phrases are commonly used out of context, to indicate a horrible situation, etc. However, Juliet doesn't realize that these words clearly foreshadow her fate.

Light and Dark Imagery

~Juliet's room is light and full of brightness. This is symbolic of her nature as the source of light.

~ Juliet is wearing a tattoo of the sun. This shows Juliet's association with light.

~Romeo is wearing a tattoo of the moon. This shows his association with inconsistency and even a false light.

~When Juliet and her father get into the argument, Juliet runs out of her room and chooses to go into a jungle themed room. This is symbolic as the jungle room is less bright and jaguars are covering the borders of the room. Juliet has symbolically lunged herself into the real world, a dark and unprotected place.

~The jaguars are associated with the dark imagery, as they are predators. Juliet is at the mercy of the real world, which inevitably kills her in the end.

~Juliet and Romeo wear light clothing covered by light clothing. This symbolizes their true luminescence covered by a barrier from the real world, dark imagery.

~The dark bed cover verses the white heart pillow are symbolic, as the pillow is the tiny light in the form of love, that allows Romeo and Juliet to escape the darkness of the real world (dark).

~The lighting in Juliet's room is much brighter and natural. However, in her transition to the jungle themed room, the lighting is darker and less natural. This is symbolic to her protection from the outside world, to her new lunge into the real world.

For centuries, literature has been seen as a form of escapism. Open a book; read an adventure. Find a new world with a book. Go on a vacation in your own living room; read a book. Modern-day libraries are coated like thick paint with such clichs, on posters and flyers and librarian lips. However, these clichs cannot be found in Writing and Reading, a short excerpt of Richard Wright's Black Boy. Wright, like many heavy literates, did not read as a young man to escape or to go on an adventure. He read to connect to reality.

Before he happened upon the chance to read great literature, the North symbolized to [Wright] all that [he] had not felt and seen with no relation whatever to what actually existed (Wright 1). He had read before, of course, but only pulp stories and Get-Rich-Quick seriesand even to his naïve imagination the possibilities presented in those works were too remote (Wright 1).

As a young workingman, he lucked upon the illegal opportunity to rent books from the library. These literary works did in fact grant him an increased literacy and advanced wisdom. His desire to write became greater as well, but the idea of using the written word like a weapon frightened him (Wright 14). But more so, they gave him a bond with a reality he had yet to acknowledge in his Jim Crow station in life (Wright 144).

Suddenly, he only had to read a book that had spoken of how [white men] lived and thought to identify himself with those characters and that book (Wright 14). When he read his first serious novel, he abruptly saw his boss and identified him as an American type (Wright 14). The vast distance separating [him] from the boss depleted, making Wright feel closer to him (Wright 14).

At one point, Wright even told the readers that the plots and stories in the novels did not interest [him] so much as the point of view revealed (14). He read so to see and feel something different of other human being, rather than of fantasy (Wright 14). Much like his sudden connection with his boss, other novels he read revived… a vivid sense of [his] mother's suffering that overwhelmed him (Wright 144).

However, with this new tie to the rest of the human raceto other races, genders, and ageshis knowledge of his own life was also increased to a dangerous degree. He knew the sorrowful oppression of a Negro's life suddenly (Wright 144). He had been able to endure the hunger and live with hate before, but feeling that there were feelings denied to him severely wounded him (Wright 144). The connections he had made with the rest of the world had showed him the hopelessness of his own existence. Therefore, books not only helped him identify with the others… but with himself as well.

That kind of personal realization was considered dangerous in a Negro, at that time and place. This presented Wright with a problem. He could forget what [he] had read and thrust the whites out of [his] mind (Wright 146). However, he did not want others to violate [his] life, so how could he possibly lose the amount of dignity required to voluntarily violate [himself] (Wright 146)? Knowledge proved to Wright that it could, in fact, be a scary asset. He no longer felt the world about [him] was hostile, killing (Wright 144). He knew it (Wright 144).

It is easy to say that reading is so enticing because it helps the reader escape. The simplest reasoning has always been the preferable reasoning to many young adults. Yet… Wright proves that there is more to reading than turning into a peg-legged pirate or world-renowned baseball player. There is more to reading than running off on fictional endeavors.

A good few years back, there was a child who was a loner and stayed within herself due to her undesirable home life. She would read book after book, but never to escapewhy, she could play in the woods with her brothers if she wished to escape for a while. No, she read books to relate to the worldto see the perspective of that young pretty blonde girl in her class with the exclusive self-made societies, of her chain-smoking teacher who had lost his two children in a custody battle, of those well-to-do boys that would scowl at her when she crossed their kickball field at recess. Wright has never been alone in his literary bonds with humanity. Perhaps, in fact, somebody he knew or would never know was connecting right back to him.

A young girl, nor old withered man or any variant of the human persona, can never truly explain what she has derived from the novels she has read. She quite usually has no fantastic adventures or big new worlds to describe, but nothing less than a sense of life itself (Wright 144). Works Cited

For the last 50 years language has been treated as a very sensitive issue in our country. During the Pakistani period the Pakistani regime wanted to suppress the rights of Bengali people. Their main attention was focused on Bangla. After the independence this problem no longer existed. However, in the last few years we find that English is becoming the most dominating language in the realm of higher education. There are now more than 16 private universities in the country. In all of them, the medium of instruction is English. Even in the public universities a shift towards English has been taking place for sometime. For example those students who study BBA or Computer Science in different colleges and Institutes under National University have to study in English.

In the SSC and HSC level adequate importance is not given to English in the curriculum. As a result most of the students remain weak in this language. They find a lot of difficulties in higher education. It is known to us all that there is an acute shortage of quality textbooks or reference books in Bangla in the graduate level. The condition is worse in computer education. Nor we can find enough translations. So the students have to depend on memorization in higher studies where creativity and individual perception should have been the main features of our students. The reality is that English was and still the language of higher education and the majority of the students are weak in English. As a result it is causing a great problem to our educational standard. We need to solve this problem as soon as possible.

In Hons. Or Masters level the students have to read a lot of textbooks and reference materials. If a student cannot read English books fast enough and understand properly then he may pass the exam but would surely lack a lot of skills and information that we get from institutional education. Thus when they enter into the job market they lack productivity. Spoken English is another area where most us suffer terribly. Thus it is difficult for most of our students to achieve international standard in their respective fields after they finish their studies.

To tackle this situation, a course of English Language has been introduced in Hons. Level in Dhaka University and National University for most of the students with the aim to increase the skill of the students in this regard. However, this move has not proved to be that much effective. The problem still continues. In the private universities the students have to study or courses on English Language no matter which subject they study. For the weak students they have arrangements for intensive course. Still this problem exists. Actually it is very difficult to make a difference in English Language skills in higher education if adequate steps are not taken in Primary, Secondary and Higher Secondary levels.

It is easy to say that substantial improvements have to be made in English Language teaching and learning in the lower early stages of the educational system. However, it is extremely difficult to implement any plan for several reasons. First of all, any change would need a lot of money. Secondly, an acute shortage of experts on Applied Linguistics exists in Bangladesh. Most of the students who complete their Masters in English every year come from Literature background. Only 0 or 0 students come from Applied Linguistics and ELT background or popularly known as English language stream. National University is yet to introduce this stream. There is no doubt or controversy that we need more teachers from Applied Linguistics and ELT (English Language Teaching) background in the school and college level. Implementing universal use of audio- visual materials is another problem as only 0% of the population have access to electricity. Thus problems like scarcity of resources, shortage of skilled teachers and weak infrastructure are to blame for this national crisis. It's almost impossible to solve this problem in the near future but we don't have any choice but to increase the skills of English Language of our students at to a substantial level without any delay. Or else we would continue to pay a heavy price. A good portion of the university graduates is considered not skilled enough in the job market especially in the private sector only for being weak in English Language.

In this age of globalization we cannot ignore English especially at a time when we are embracing free market economy. University graduates are considered to be the most important part of human resources of any country. Therefore, we have to ensure that they become skilled in English so that they can bring out the maximum from their respective fields as well become fit for the job market.

Order your The Sale of Goods Act imposes terms relating to goods matching samples or descriptions, and meeting standards of fitness, quality, and title. Explain the nature of these implied terms and their effect on the parties. Indicate which terms are conditions paper at affordable prices!

With respect to the implied term relating to description, the Sale of Goods Act (SGA) states that, when a sale is accomplished by description, there is an implied condition that the goods delivered must correspond with the description or illustration provided. This includes the sale of all manufactured goods, even when sold in a self-serve context, because the consumer must rely on the description provided by the manufacturer in order to assess the goods and make a decision to purchase. This implied term signifies that the manufacturer must ensure that the description associated with a given product accurately represents the product in question. As for sale by sample, the SGA asserts that there is an implied condition that necessitates that the goods purchased correspond with the sample and that they not have any considerable hidden defects that would have influenced the consumer not to purchase them at the agreed upon price had he or she been aware of the defect. (In other words, there is an implied condition that the goods must be of merchantable quality.) However, had the defect been detectable upon examination of the sample, this sale by sample condition would not apply. Manufacturers can over-ride the implied condition relating to sale by sample with carefully worded clauses, such as warranties, unless such over-riding is prohibited by statute. Otherwise, the manufacturer has a duty to ensure that the products sold are of merchantable quality. As for the implied term relating to fitness and quality, again, the SGA states that the goods must be of merchantable quality but also that the goods must be suitable for the purpose for which they were purchased. This is a condition and it is met if the buyer notifies the seller about the purpose for which the goods will be used, the buyer relies of the seller's expertise, and the seller sells the goods in question in its normal course of business. This condition of fitness and quality does not apply when the goods are bought according to brand or trade name. The implied term of the SGA relating to title states that the seller must convey good title. Meaning, the seller must actually have the right to sell the goods. The seller must also provide quiet possession of the goods to the buyer. Meaning, a third party will not interfere with the buyer's enjoyment of the goods he or she purchased. The implied term relating to title is a warranty.

An implied warranty in the SGA is a minor, non-essential term of the contract. Its breach does not liberate the injured party from the rest of the contractual obligations. (In other words, it does not give the victim the right to terminate the contract.) On the other hand, a condition is an essential term of the contract. The breach of an implied condition permits the victim to treat the contract as invalid because the breach affects the very basis of the contract. In the context of this question, in the SGA, the implied terms that are warranties are those relating to title while the implied terms that are conditions are those relating to description, sale by sample and fitness and quality.

Surrealism

Kevin Wilson

Photography enriches our lives in many ways. A creative photographer is one who selects and captures qualities in their subject that make the picture artistic rather than plain and common. Ways of making photographs creative and more interesting can be by using different techniques and art movements. Surrealism is a movement in art that attempts to express the subconscious mind. It is a style that shows strange objects and shapes like those in dreams and fantasies.

During the period of 18, the surrealist movement within photography was in what was known as its transition from an intuitive to a reasoning phase. Surrealism allows the viewer to enter a realm of dreams by conquest and normatively. Some take the history of photography to embody the political potential of surrealism in a variety of ways. They replace the notion of 'photography as an art' with the idea of 'art as photography'. It allows a window and everlasting view of the surroundings. Surrealism hoped to accomplish similar achievements, but instead of the surroundings around people, it is the surroundings in their dreams and fantasies. It was a way of expressing what a person sees that others can't. Photography could be seen in a special and interesting way, with the surrealists aimed at restoring the interest and quality to photos with an added magical concept to everyday objects and images.

One great photographer who used the method of surrealism and was able to capture images that appeared to be from dreams and fantasies was Kevin Wilson. He has been doing photography for many years and states that all my photographic work is dream inspired. (Quote The surrealist look at art). Like many other surrealists photographs, Wilson attempted to recreate the feelings, anxieties and emotions evoked through his dreams. Kevin worked with digital photography for many years and then begun experimenting with other methods such as pinhole cameras, solarisation, photogram, photomontage, glass negative and double exposure. Most of these techniques provide an unpredictable and hazy nature which is ideal for recreating dream settings.

The pinhole camera is considered a very simple technique. There is no need for a lens just a light proof box with a pin hole opening that allows light to hit a sheet of film. There is a lack of control which means you can never be sure how the final image will look. This technique provides a dream like quality and the image taken can be difficult to comprehend. Another technique is solarisation, it is the result of shinning light onto a developing photograph in the darkroom. The effect is a selective reversal of highlights and shadows where parts of the image are positive while other parts are negative and this can leave a distinct line where the reversal has occurred. It can produce dramatic effects of light and dark. A photogram is created without a camera, it is made by placing an object directly onto or holding it above light sensitive paper in a darkroom and then exposing it to light. Photomontage consists of combining several photographs together for each print. It is an ideal method for unifying unrelated elements producing images that have a dream like quality. Glass negative is a photographic print that is made from a design drawn onto a glass negative. Usually a drawing is scratched onto a coated glass plate that was then contact-printed onto sensitised paper. Double exposure is a film negative that has two separate images in the same frame. The photographer takes one photo, then focuses on another object and takes a second photo without forwarding the film. These are just some of the different techniques that the surrealist photographers use to create the dream and fantasy like images.

Kevin Wilson was a self-taught photographer, therefore everything he knows and knows about photography has come through a process of trial and error. This has given him the opportunity of having a great deal of freedom. Since he was unaware of the depth and knowledge involved with photography, when he received his first camera he basically made up his own ways to suit the subject matter. When following an art movement such as surrealism within photography it was a lot easier for him to just forget any of the rules involved with photography and follow whatever method was necessary. Wilson is using photography and surrealism as a way to explore his own emotions and dreams.

The art movement of surrealism is quite a difficult one to follow. Though it does offer photographers, such as Kevin Wilson a way of exploring and sharing his emotions and dreams. Through his photography all these emotions, anxieties and fantasies are able to surface and he can show people what he is going through and the experiences he is experiencing. Though surrealism was a popular art movement many, many years ago, it is only recently been picked up by photographers and their digital imaging. It is a great way of express what you are feeling and thinking to the onlookers of the photographs.

Please note that this sample paper on Surrealism is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. I feel that it is a paper at affordable prices with cheap essay writing service!

great movie, and is an outstanding form of popular culture. There are many different events that take place throughout this film that show this.

Field of Dreams stars Kevin Costner and James Earl Jones. Costner plays a guy named Ray who, one day while working in his corn field, hears a voice. The voice tells him, If you build it, he will come. After he hears the voice a few times he tears down his corn field, and builds a baseball field. Jones plays a retired author named Thomas Mann. Mann hears these voices also, and understands what Ray is going through. Reluctantly Mann goes along with Ray. After awhile old members of the White Sox, who got banned from baseball for life, appear out of the corn field. They now have a chance to play ball again. Mann ends up going back into the corn with the players in the end.

This movie is more than just a movie about a sport. It has many other significant meanings. First of all, this film shows loyalty between Ray's wife and him. Most wives would think their husbands were crazy if they told them they heard voices, which were telling them to build a baseball field. It's going to take a ton of money, and also a lot of knowledge on how to go about doing it. It show how she believed in him when no one else would listen. She stuck by her husband like a wife is supposed to do, and gave him support when needed. I believe a lot of Americans liked seeing that type of commitment between two people, especially in a world where it's not as prevalent as it should be.

The second point this film shows is how much Ray loves baseball. Baseball has been a major part of American society and culture since the late 1800's. It is known as America's pastime. Throughout the film it is made very evident of the love Ray displays for the great game of baseball. The amount of money he spends to make the field says enough. One scene shows Ray on a tractor as he is plowing a field in preparation for the building of the stadium. His daughter is sitting on his lap. She is asking him all kinds of questions about baseball, and Ray answers all of them in a way that you can tell he loves talking about it. Another scene shows him driving across the country to find help for what he is doing. The sacrifices he makes for the game are incredible. Being a huge baseball fan this movie shows everything that is right about baseball. It shows that it is a game, and should be played for the fun of it.

The third point this film makes is it allows the dreams of the players to live on. People having dreams is what makes the world happen. Without having a dream no one goes anywhere. In this film members of the old White Sox team that got banned from baseball are able to get back into the game, and once again live out the dreams and fantasies of playing the game they love. It kind of gives people hope, in a sense, not to give up.

Still another point this film makes is in the world of relationships. The film shows the relations between a father and son. Ray finds out that one of the players who comes back to play is his father. He realizes that is what the voice was telling him. His father was the one who would come back if he built the field. While he was growing up he didn't have the greatest relationship with his father. His father died while he was at a rather young age. Ray is aware that it is his father. Ray's father is young so he has no idea he is his son. That didn't matter though. Just to know that his father is back once again is enough for Ray. This is a problem many people in the world face. Lots of fathers and sons don't have good relationships with each other. There are many reasons for this. This movie is one that people can relate with in a way. Many times there are things left unsaid when one dies. This could influence people to make things happen while the opportunity is still there, and to not waste the time they have.

In conclusion I would just like to say that while there are many aspects of the film industry that are bad for society, this film shows nothing but good things about the film industry. Like I said previously, it is more than just a movie about a sport. It goes greater in depth with different situations. These are situations people can relate with, and that they care about. This is a good example of popular culture. I do not feel as though it exploits or distracts people from other forms of culture, however. Some movies obviously do, but this is not that type of film.

Swimming was invented before recorded history. Humans discovered how to swim by accident. A person probably fell into the water and struggled to shore using a dog-paddle stroke. There was an Egyptian hieroglyph for swimming dating from 500 BC. The ancient Greeks and Romans made swimming an important part of their military training programs. There have been known swimming contests that were organized in Japan as early as the 1st century BC.

During the Middle Ages in Europe, swimming declined in popularity. People felt that the water was contaminated and a source of disease. Not everyone feared the water, however, Louis XI reportedly swam daily in the Seine.

During the early 1th century, swimming enjoyed a revival, especially in England, Lord Byron swam the Dardanelles river, to prove that the mythological hero Leander could have done it. Organized competitive swimming began in England in the 1840s.

In 1844 the British were surprised when two American Indians demonstrated the efficiency of a method of swimming similar to the modern crawl. The British still swam with the head above the water, a holdover from the days when people believed that the water was contaminated.

An overhand stroke was introduced into England in 187 by J. Arthur Trudgen, who had seen South American Indians using this method to swim really fast. When the flutter kick was introduced, the modern Australian crawl was born, and this stroke has since become the most common and most important swimming stroke.

FITNESS COMPONENTS

To swim well u need to know how to coordinate your arms and legs to get you through the water. At first you will probably need to have lessons. Also to swim u need agility and just gravity. Swimming also requires balance and quickness in some cases.

Not much is needed to know if you want to swim.

Swimming improves heart and lung efficiency, enhances muscle strength and endurance, improves flexibility, and reduces stress. Its easy on the joints, and uses more muscles than most other forms of exercise. Although swimming burns a great deal of calories, recreational swimmers tend to lose less weight than would be expected from other types of aerobic activity. Scientists say that cold water removes heat from the body, stimulating appetite to keep the body warm. Exposure to cold water may encourage the body to maintain fat stores for insulation. To lose weight by swimming, its necessary to cut down on the calories you eat, and to swim fast enough and long enough.

Swimming can burn more than 660 calories an hour when performed correctly and causes less injuries to joints and muscles than aerobics or jogging. It takes only three hours a week of strenuous swimming to improve flexibility, increase strength and build cardiovascular endurance. Swimming provides a good aerobic workout if 5% of the total laps are performed at maximum intensity. However, only 5% of those who swim do so at an aerobic pace.

Although few doubt the aerobic benefits of swimming, studies comparing swimming with jogging, results found that swimmers lost less body fat than joggers.

Apparently swimming causes an adjustment in how energy is burned, resulting in the burning of more carbohydrates than body fat. One reason might be that swimmers retain more body fat to insulate and maintain body heat. However, swimming works both the upper and lower body which jogging does not.

WHAT IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT COMPONENT TO MASTER IN YOUR SPORT? EXPLAIN HOW THIS IS ACCOMPLISHED.

More than half of all Americans cant swim. Drownings claimed 5,00 American lives in 10 and is the fourth leading cause of accidental deaths for children under 5.

Many feel figures are actually higher, since deaths occurring after resuscitation or hospitalization usually arent attributed to the original drowning. Many lives could be saved if people would just learn to swim. Correct swimming doesnt come naturally to the body and cant be learned overnight. Those swimmers who are exhausted after half a lap need more instruction. The most common swimming problem is incorrect breathing which causes individuals to expend more energy than necessary. Coordinating breathing with proper head rotation is the key to proficient swimming. Proper instruction is the only way you can learn this, it is the key component to swim well.

WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT YOUR SPORT?

The most unique thing about swimming is the actual racing in the water, you dive off blocks and swim as fast as u can in as many different styles and lengths.

LIST ONE POSITIVE PROFESSIONAL ROLE MODEL IN YOUR SPORT.

Mark Spitz, is a well known swimmer who won a record seven gold medals at the 17 Olympic Games. No athlete in any event had ever dominated a single Olympics as did Spitz. In 17 he won the 100- and 00-m freestyle and butterfly events, and was a member of the winning 4 X 100- and 4 X 00-m freestyle relay teams and the 4 X 100-m medley relay team. Spitz set world and 8 U.S. swimming records during his career.

He was a very big role model for aspiring young swimmers.

There is a child that has been neglected throughout his entire life and the only thing that he has ever found satisfaction in is music. As he grows into a young man his choice for styles of music he listens to changes. He starts to listen to R&B as well as rap, versus the Barney and Sesame Street music that he is used to. The rap music digs deep into his brain as pleasant, the way that he should live. So he begins to live by it. Everything that the music says he does. Through everything that was said and done, he finds himself behind the bars of the Memphis Correctional Facility with the charges of possession of narcotics, assault with a deadly weapon, and above all things two counts of attempted murder. Censorship is a very sensitive subject especially if you are in addressing it in the direction of the younger generation of today's society. It holds great controversy, as explained in the article Curbing the Sexploitation Industry written by Tipper Gore, in America today. In the article written by Sam Brownback, Free Speech Lyric, Liberty, and License, he jumps from topic to topic trying to get them to go toward the same direction. This subject has been the downfall and the uprising of the world of entertainment. The causes and consequences that is discussed in the two persuasive pieces written by Tipper Gore and Sam Brownback, has put some ease to the troubling mind or our troubling acts of society. Gore has an outstanding argument and she backs it up with impressive evidence. She has the stronger argument, no doubt.

The pathos of Gore's topic is very effective on her readers. She uses stories to support her topics. For example when she states that a five year old boy from Boston

recently got up from watching a teen slasher film and stabbed a two year old with a butcher knife (444). She has a distinct way of building her readers by being blunt. She doesn't sugar coat anything for her readers. She states, We don't need to put a childproof cap on the world, but we do need to remind the nation that children live in it, too (44). This stresses the importance of censorship on the younger generation. She is relaying how the downfall of the youth is in grave danger and it can easily be fixed. She also addresses the adults by asking the question Do we not see the problems that our children go through (448)? This explains Gore's feelings on this topic as well. She has a strategy of going to the core of the problem, the adults, and fixing it. That successively worked.

The pathos of Brownback is very interesting as I read it thoroughly. He has more of an emphasis on liberty involving speech that speech involving liberty. He addresses the youth as well, but he does it by quoting rock artists. An example is when he quotes Marilyn Manson, Music is such a powerful medium now. The kids don't even know who the President is, but they know what's on MTV. I think if anyone like Hitler or Mussolini were alive now, they would have to be rock stars (44). He also sends a message to the youth by saying, …no one spends more time listening to music then young people (448). He also states that statistics, that the average teenager listens to music around four hours a day (448). After that comment, he states another important one . less than an hour is spent on homework or reading, less than twenty minutes a day

talking to Mom, and less than five minutes talking to Dad (448). Every point he makes he puts refers back to the youth and links them to the modern styles, shock rock and rap.

By him addressing the youth, which still doesn't mean when he is put in a category with Gore, he is going to win. Gore has a very strong pathos.

When talking about logos, Gore's is simply, the welfare of the young society of today. She is just trying to protect them from some of the harmful things that the world conveys through music. She is trying to give the heads up on what one of the problems are and one of the solutions on how to make it better. There is a lack of understanding between that older generation and the younger generation. Gore is trying to reach the older generation by using the topics of the younger generation. Brownback has three different topics all linked to one topic. He speaks on the liberties of the society and he stresses media. Well everything that is watched on television isn't always what is true about the younger generation, Mr. Brownback! He wants to have a more controlled world than Gore. That's going to be a very hard thing to do, because of the controversy that comes with the topic. Gore's argument is much stronger, because her argument is far more realistic that Brownback's.

Refer to the ethos between the two authors they both agree that the youth is one of the most important topics to address, as the other one is the adult crowd. There is a difference between them as stated before. Gore is relaxed about the freedom of the youth, while Brownback is focused on eliminating, or more controlling the freedom of them. This is the impressions that these two articles reflects on me in general that is two of the most important subjects that is written about.

Saint Saturnius, later francized to sernin, was martyred on November in the year 50 for failing to sacrifice to the pagan gods that the Romans forced upon his people. After being dragged to death by a bull he was buried, and at the end of the 4th century a basilica was constructed above his tomb. This building was replaced in the late 11th century by the Saint Sernin basilica (see appendix, 1ab) that is currently in Toulouse, France, a town positioned on the Garronne River a short distance from its union with the Ariege River. Measuring in at 115 m long and 1.1 m high this new structure is the largest of the churches along the principle routes to Santiago de Compostela in France and upper Spain known as the pilgrimage churches (see appendix, ).

The building of this basilica is credited to Bishop Petrus Rogerius. However, canon Raymond Gairard is also recognized as the constructor of the body of the church before he died in 1118. Even though additions continued through the 16th century, the building was consecrated in 111. These additions were the result of the need for expansion due to the increasing number of pilgrims who passed through the church. Viollet-le-Duc completed the final major restoration of Saint Sernin in 1860. This building has survived intact since then, and is considered an extremely important Christian landmark.

Saint Sernin is a cruciform basilica with quite a large square based, proportional structure. Twin portals open to a five-aisled barrel vault nave with eleven bays. The nave is intersected at the transept with a square crossing and an octagonal tower. Two other western towers were also to be added, but were never completed. The ambulatory encircling the crypt includes five projecting chapels. The aisle continues along the perimeter of the church with tribunes along the way as far as the west facade. Stone and brick comprise the piers and wall spans that lead up to large tribune windows. These windows that replace a clerestory are supported by quadrant and barrel vaulting and let in massive amounts of light creating a very open, airy interior. The reliquary is elevated to allow viewing from the main ambulatory, and it includes Gothic details such as rib vaulting.

Decoration is very important in Saint Sernin. Relief, carved capitols, plates, and portals all add to the incredible beauty of the building. Two sculpture programmes were planned in the 11th century for this church. The first of these programmes focused on the image of Saint Sernin encompassed with lions, and included themes of punishment and deliverance. There was definite consistency in the carving of the limestone used, especially in humans. For example, oval heads, double incision eyes, single incision mouths, and vertically folded drapery in arched patterns were constantly used.

In the second programme, marble reliefs and ivory carvings were produced. A major work to come from this programme was the Porte Miegeville (see appendix, ). The Porte Miegeville is a recessed portal, depicting the following sculptures the ascension of Christ on the tympanum, two Old Testament prophets with the twelve apostles on the lintel, and Saints Peter and James in the spandrels all in the plastic style developed along the pilgrimage routes (Zarnecki, 57). Other important works to come from the second programme are the Marble altar table and Maiestas Domini (see appendix, 4ab), a marble relief, both produced by the famous pilgrimage church sculptor Bernardus Gelduinus. Gelduinus, a sculptor from the Romanesque period is known for his great pieces, and simply because he's the only one to sign his works.

Relics are a very important part of the sacred value of Saint Sernin. Pilgrams came in droves to view the many relics housed inside the chapels of the church on their way to Santiago de Compostela. The most important of the relics held by Saint Sernin are obviously those of Saint Saturnin himself. These relics are stored in the reliquary of Saint Saturnin and the golden mounting of Saint Saturnin in the crypt of the basilica (see appendix, 5ab). Another important relic to the basilica is the reliquary of the True Cross. This reliquary is covered in the noteworthy enameled copper work that tells the story of the true cross (see appendix, 6).

Externally, the Saint Sernin basilica conveys power and magnificence in the intricate eastern façade and tower, while displaying grace and relation to average people in the western façade. Internally, the structure seems overpowering in height and spaciousness, while remaining subtle in much of its dcor. Saint Sernin exemplifies one of the greatest achievements of the medieval period in the history of art. This Christian stronghold houses many relics, sculptures, and a history that has become very important to the religious world.

P.S.-I got an A

Writing is one of the few subjects that have the ability to take you through an infinite number of different situations, possibilities, emotions, and ideas. It has the unique power of being able to transport you through your thoughts, one by one as they accumulate onto what was once a blank sheet of paper. Writing is my time machine that allows me to travel through my past and my memories, through the present, and into my future.

The past is not only my history, but also the history of my family and ancestors. I can remember my great grandfather rather well. I was about five or six years old when my family lived in West Virginia, right beside his huge brick house that always seemed to tower hundreds of feet over me. I can remember that he had an enormous backyard and that he would always let me go out and feed the squirrels that would frolic in his overgrown trees. I loved to watch the squirrels play and would spend hours outside just watching them hop from branch to branch. Another memory that I have of him, although a bit random is that his dining room was a hideous shade of potato brown. He passed away when I was only twelve years old and all I could remember at that time was his ugly dining room and those crazy squirrels that I would love to feed. After he died I found his diary and began to read it. His writing left a trail that helped me discover more about my family and my ancestors. Without that diary, I would have probably never known that he met my great grandmother at a diner that his father owned. I would have never discovered that when my grandparents met he hated my grandfather because of his shaggy haircut. Bits and pieces of my family's past, as well as my own were found in these writings. On a more immediate level, I still look back on journal entries that I wrote from when I was younger. It is amazing how vivid the memories still are. It is almost as if they were frozen in time just waiting patiently for me to come back and remember them. As I read some of my writings I cannot help but laugh. It is strange how a situation at the time can seem so horrible but, three or five years later, it just seems funny and there appears to be nothing horrible about it. I have found that writing and time tend to put things into perspective. I can only hope that my journals will assist my family and I by putting things into that perspective that they sometimes need, and by leaving a trail of history behind wherever they go.

Writing encompasses my daily life in the present, not only as an active college student, but also at home. I was born overseas and have many friends and relatives that live scattered about the country and the world. The primary way that I maintain ties and connections with them is through writing letters and emails. Some of my best friends live across the country and by writing to them it has preserved some of the most valued friendships that I have. Another way that writing is involved in my life is when I begin writing in a journal about things that are bothering or upsetting me. It serves as an outlet for my emotions. Writing has the unique ability to listen to problems without placing judgment and I feel writing serves me best this way. I am a very passionate and opinionated person and, whether that is good or bad, I do have a lot to say and am not always free to express those thoughts. When this happens, I begin writing. As the words flow from my mind to the paper, I am free to write down anything I feel knowing I will not be judged or characterized in any way. Sir Phillip Sydney once stated, Said my muse to me, look in thy heart and write. Writing serves as my truth and is a major component of my everyday life. It is uninhibited, realistic and straight from my heart.

For I dipt into the future, far as human eye could see, and saw the vision of the world and all the wonder that would be (Tennyson). I am always looking to the future and wondering what it holds for me. My future is constantly evolving and writing has a great deal to do with that. Many people think that writing stops after high school or after the first couple of English classes in college, but it doesn't. The writing continues with research papers, term papers, and dissertations. I am personally planning to apply for internships that I have to compete for by writing essays. I am going to have to write an essay when I take the MCAT as well as for when I apply to medical school. Writing is one of the building blocks in this future that I strive to obtain and is the very thing that will probably make or break my future and my goals. Who knows what the future holds? The truth is, nobody does. What I do know is that writing never halts and it fuels this unknown future that is inching closer and closer everyday.

Writing is a remarkable tool that every human being has instilled inside of them. It is my amazing time machine that takes me back to memories that were once lost, that allows me to stay in the present and take note of my thoughts, and that drives me forwards to a future that looks bright and alive.

In chapter one, Gregor Samsa awakes one morning to finds out that he has been transformed into a giant insect. As soon as he realizes that he's a bug, he also finds out that he overslept. His parents and his sister Grete try to wake him up so he can make it to his job as a traveling salesman. The family depends on him for its livelihood. When a clerk from his company comes to his house to find out why he wasn't at work, Gregor tried to open the do and show himself. This makes the terrified clerk run down the stairwell and Gregors family becomes shocked. Grete, Gregor's sister takes care of Gregor more than her family. She feeds him and cleans his room. But after the family realizes that they all need to get jobs, everyone pays less attention to Gregor. But when he gets out of his room, that's when everyone gives their attention to him. But it doesn't help because Gregor doesn't know how to express himself to his family. They become scared and disgusted by his appearance, so his father throws an apple at Gregor and he gets and big wound. To make some money, the family decides to take in three lodgers, using Gregors room to store all the extra furniture. Yet the family does leave Gregors door slightly open in the evenings, so that he can see what is going on in the household. One evening, the lodgers hear Grete practicing her violin. They call her into the living room, so she can play in front of them. Since Gregor loves her playing so much that he creeps out and starts walking towards her, trying to tell her that he sees her talent and will help it blossom. After the lodgers see Gregor, they start yelling and asking why haven't they been seen this insect before. Then they say that because of this incident they will not pay the rent and leave immediately the next day. This is the breaking point for the family. Grete declares that they cannot take care of Gregor anymore and if this would be

the real Gregor then he would leave the house. After all the talking they decide that they have to get rid of him. Unfortunately they don't get to see him after that night, because he dies. After a second of mourning, the father tells the lodgers to leave immediately. Then they move to the countryside. At the end, the author describes a beautiful, sunny day, and Grete's parents think of finding her a husband.

In the beginning, when Gregor is transformed, you can definitely see that he is not surprised at all. He becomes an insect and the only thought that bothers him is the fact that he cannot get up for work. This implies that his job is his first priority and being an insect does not surprise him at all. There are three points in chapter one to back up this idea. After he starts to feel an ache on his body, he begins to think, Oh God, he thought, what an exhausting job I've picked on! Then he looks at the clock and realizes that he overslept and missed the train. He starts worrying about how he will get to work. Last example is when a clerk from his company comes to his house, Gregor is not worried at all by his appearance and he tries to open the door to show the clerk the reason he didn't come to work. Naturally, the clerk was horrified and ran away.

After Gregor woke up and felt an ache on his body, he immediately remembered that he has a job, which he absolutely hates. If this had happened to a normal person, the person would probably have a heart attack. At first he talks about his new body and then he starts rambling on about his work. This shows his indifference to the situation and that he accepts this transformation like it was supposed to happen.

After he's done thinking of how much he hates his job, he realizes that he is late for work. How can you be worried about getting to work, when you just turned into an insect? It looks like the more he is worried about his job; the closer he gets to fully transforming into a bug. His indifference gives a push to his metamorphosis. For example, when he tries to get out of his room to get to work, his voice starts to change. When he yells to his mother that he'll be right now, she even notices the change in his voice.

At last, when a clerk from his company comes to his house, Gregor is worried about getting the door open so he can show him why he didn't come to work. The thought that everyone might be horrified didn't even cross his mind. The only thing that he thought about is getting out, showing why he was late and getting to work. This situation repeats in this story, when he decides to come out of his room while his sister is playing the violin. He also does not think that it will scare his family, not to mention the lodgers.

Through the whole story, his family is more upset about his metamorphosis than he is. While his sister is worried about what food he wants to eat, he climbs on walls and swings from the ceiling. While his mother tries to get the furniture out of the room so it would be more comfortable for him, he is worried about the picture. Overall, the transformation was not completed until he became totally indifferent to the situation.
