William Shakespeare's King Lear incorporates many themes, some which are even a recurring pattern throughout the play. The matter of vision and insight, or even the lack of it, is an important theme in this play. This theme is elegantly rendered through the characters of King Lear and Gloucester. The lack of insight or blindness in this play is quite symbolic. Blindness is most often defined as physically lacking deficient in the ability to see. In the case of King Lear, blindness and the lack of vision and insight has a different meaning. For King Lear, blindness was not a physical problem; instead it was a flaw that he possessed. His blindness to see the truth in a person's personality and character was clear in the beginning of the play with Cordelia and later on with Kent. Gloucester, on the other hand, was initially blinded also because of his personal flaw to see what is really there. He eventually did become physically blind, but later attains vision in a different way, vision that Lear does not see or ever attain until it is too late.

From the very beginning of the play, Lear's lack of insight is evident. His sight to see other people's true character is clearly blurred. Lear has trouble telling apart between the truth and lies. In Act I, Lear asks his three daughters who loves him the most. He is unable to see the truth in Goneril and Regan because they cover their true feelings with a disguise, fooling Lear to think they love him the most. Lear knows in his heart that Cordelia loves him dearly, but his lack of insight fails to see Cordelia's true feelings as she responds,

Unhappy that I am, I cannot heave

My heart into my mouth, I love your Majesty

According to my bond, no more nor less. (1.1.-5)

To Lear, Cordelia is not telling him that she loves him. Lear does not understand Cordelia's words; he misunderstands her and is unable to see the love she has for him because of the flattery he has received from Goneril and Regan and because of his lack of insight and understanding. He does not see that Cordelia's love for him is not as false as her sisters. And with his misunderstanding of her love, he disowns her and gives her no share of his kingdom.

Soon after Lear decides to disown Cordelia, his blindness causes him, once again, to act irrational by banishing Kent, one of his most loyal followers. Kent, possessing better insight than Lear, realizes what a rash decision Lear has made disowning Cordelia. Unlike Lear, Kent is able to see the true love that Cordelia has for her father. Trying to help Cordelia, Kent attempts to reason Lear and help him see better by telling him he is making the wrong decision and that he is seeing Cordelia's love for him in the wrong way. To Lear's opposition response, Out of my sight! (1.1.15), Kent quickly replies, See better, Lear, and let me still remain/The true blank of thine eye. (1.1.160-161). Here, Kent tries to make Lear understand and to have Lear listen to him when he is advising him to reconsider and to see better and clearer about the situation with Cordelia. Unfortunately, with all the anger and the lack of insight, Lear refuses to listen to Kent and banishes him from the kingdom. Lear, unfortunately, is unable to see how right Kent is and how Kent has a better and clearer vision of the situation. Lear was unable to see that Kent was only trying to help Lear and to do what was best for him. Kent is to Lear, the window to see clearly. He is Lear's eyes that see all. Since Lear banished Kent, he no longer has any way of seeing or understanding, and therefore becomes blinder than ever.

In a parallel subplot, Gloucester also suffers with blindness. Similarily to Lear, Gloucester was unable to see which of his children truly loved him. His blindness led him to believe that Edmund was the more loving of the two, and that Edgar was the evil son plotting to kill him. When in fact, it was the other way around. As Edmund forges a letter, supposedly written by Edgar, saying that Edgar is attempting to kill his father. Gloucester immediately is convinced that the letter was truly written by Edgar and never considered thinking if Edgar would really do such a thing. Unlike Lear, Gloucester's vision clears up when the Duke of Cornwall plucks his eyes out. From that moment, Gloucester began to see more clearly. Using his heart, Gloucester realizes at the end of the play, that Edgar was in fact the good son and that he saved his life while disguised as Poor Tom. I have no way and therefore want no eyes;/I stumbled when I saw (4.1.18-1) was the turning point of Gloucester's life as his vision finally clears up. Gloucester realizes how blind he was and how he lacked insight when he was physically able to see. He then realizes that although he was physically able to see, he knew he couldn't really see and that he doesn't need his eyes to finally see and understand for he can see things more clearly through his mind.

In the end, Lear's vision never cleared up and he fell, dying, to his flaw of blindness and not seeing through more than the physical appearance or through more than what is put and presented in front of him. Gloucester learned that vision is not just through the eyes, that it is rather through the heart and mind. Had Lear learned to see more through his heart, he might have avoided his death.

Blindness is a major flaw in everyone as we all see what we wish to believe. Throughout this play, it is evident that we need to look beyond what we see through our eyes and pay more attention to what is really being presented to us. We must avoid the inevitable, that is, seeing what we should not see, and not seeing what we should see. We must be able to see blinded and not be blinded by sight.

Nature is a place used by many to reflect, reminisce, and enjoy life. People want to escape from their normal daily activities and do something that is different in their lives so they turn to nature. People go to the beach for recreational activities or to just relax and meet up with friends and family. The beach is used for sports, sun bathing, or to just play with friends. In Walt Whitman's On the Beach at Night Alone, part of Leaves of Grass, Whitman speaks of a person walking on the beach. The person is just looking at the stars and thinking of the future. He is relaxing, taking a slow casual walk and taking time to just think. Shawn Hair is a painter who uses dramatic effects of light and shade to bring life to his paintings. In his painting Spencer Beach Picnic families are playing in the sand and just taking a walk on the beach. This painting is showing how the beach can be used in may different ways. It shows the love that the artist has for this setting as well as the beauty of it. Artists and writers use nature to show the feelings and moods of the objects in their work. The beach has many characteristics that draw people to come to the beach.

One specific environment that both artists and writers use is the beach. The beach can be very calm and can be used to just hang out for some relaxation. It is a very comfortable place to rest and enjoy life. As the temperature grows high, the sand begins to get hot, making it scorching at times. This quote shows the rising temperature of the beach, The sand and rocks get very hot, reflecting the sun light and radiating heat. Ripples of heat waves shimmer of the surface like air above hot coals. The reflection of the sun off the sand can give you a sunburn (www.website1.com/odyssey/week/climate.html). This shows why the beach at times can be an uncomfortable place to be. The beach can be a comfortable place to be as well as uncomfortable on your skin. When this is the case, people use beach towels or chairs to protect their body. In On the Beach at Night Alone the person in the story is taking a nice stroll on the beach and taking time to think about the world. This shows how the beach can be used for a place to relax because it is calm and quiet. Artists use their painting to depict scenes of nature to show special qualities of that environment.

ʏ

Painters use their paintings to depict a scene from nature. Shawn Hair uses his painting Spencer Beach Picnic to show a way that the beach can be used for. Figure 'A' is referring to the activities that people do on the beach. Shawn Hair feels very strong about nature and his painting that show it such as figure 'A'. Shawn paints in a special way to express his feelings,

He paints with bold colors and strokes that relay his own enthusiasm for his subjects. The way he emphasizes his inspiration is his message to the viewer, which his paint reveals in a language, all can understand. With passion and skill he forms his impressionistic images preserving the integrity of his subject. From the tranquility of a landscape to the joy of a figure or delicacy of a flower, his masterful control of his brush conveys all (http//www.shawnhair.pair.com/giftshop/shawn/).

This shows how Hair feels about his work. It tells everybody that he wants us to see the enjoyment and fun that the beach has in it. Hair uses his bright color to show the importance of the scene depicted. Authors show their feelings of nature also in their work. They use descriptive words and actions to show us what they think of the environment.

Walt Whitman depicts nature in his poem On the beach at Night Alone. Whitman writes of a woman walking on the beach and thinking of the future. He says, On the beach of night alone,/ As the old mother sways her to and fro singing here husky song,/ As I watch the bright stars shining, I think a thought of the clef of the universe and of the future (p45). He is showing how the beach can calm down a person and the beach allows them to just think. This poem shows the relaxation and calmness that the beach can present to somebody when they are using it. Whitman also says, All lives and deaths, all of the past, present, future, This vast similitude spans them, and always has spanned… (p45). This quote shows how the beach is a comfortable place to remember ideas from the past and think of the future. Nature can have a comparison between a work of art and literature such as the works here.

Both works here show the beach and what it is like. Both pieces show how the beach is a relaxing and comfortable place to be. Walt Whitman was influenced by nature while he was traveling to New Orleans on the Mississippi river. Here is a quote from Whitman about nature, The Americans of all nations at any time upon the earth have probably the fullest poetical nature. The United States themselves are essentially the greatest poem and of the peoples The largeness of nature or the nation were monstrous without a corresponding largeness and generosity of the spirit of the citizen (http//search.biography.com/print_record.pl?id=070). This shows what nature means to Walt as was influenced in America when he wrote his literature. Whitman writes novels by using nature to expand the point and plot of the story.

Nature is a place used by many to reflect, reminisce, and enjoy life. People want to escape from their normal daily activities and do something that is different in their lives so they turn to nature. Artists and writers use nature to show the feelings and moods of the objects in their work. The beach has many characteristics, which draw people to come to it. Nature is key to people's work as it can be a setting or the subject of the work. It can be exposed in many different views. A person can express feelings about nature in a book or in just one sentence. This shows how nature is important in people's life and work.

Please note that this sample paper on Nature is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. It started with the dinasors.

The first UNIVAC computer (Universal Automatic Computer

is developed in 151. It can store 1,000 digits in random

access mercury-delay lines) was delivered to the Census

Bureau in June 151.

Internally, the UNIVAC operated at a clock frequency of

.5 MHz, which was no

mean feat for vacuum tube circuits. The UNIVAC also

employed mercury delay-line memories.

Unlike the ENIAC,(electronic numerical integrator and

computer)

--the worlds first electronic digital computer the UNIVAC

processed

each digit serially. But its much higher design speed

permitted it to add two ten-digit numbers at a rate of

almost 100,000 additions per second.

The machine designed by Drs. Eckert and Mauchly was a

monstrosity.

When it was finished, the ENIAC filled an entire room,

weighed thirty tons,

and consumed two hundred kilowatts of power. Vacuum

tubes, over 1,000 of

them, were

the principal elements in the computers circuitry. It

also had fifteen

hundred relays and hundreds of thousands of resistors,

capacitors, and

inductors.

Too soon, Charles, sadly.

A century and a half ago Charles Babbage, Lucasian

Professor of Mathematics, devised his Analytical Engine,

which embodied most of the concepts which we now take for

granted in the digital computer. But those concepts were

far ahead of the available technology.

The man Maurice Vincent Wilkes, finally brought to its

fullest

reality Babbages dream, by providing the computer with the

one vital organ which it still lacked a capacious memory.

He converted a program and its data, punched onto paper

tape, into ultrasonic pulses, and he fed the pulses into a

tube of memory, which delayed their progress, and he caused

the pulses to circulate indefinitely. And so EDSAC was

born, the Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator,

the first full operational computer with its own memory.

From all sides they flocked to admire it, and stayed to

use it. Soon it was performing the vital calculations by

which our chemists and radio-astronomers perfected their

Nobel Prize-winning work. On those glorious pioneering days

he has never ceased to build.

Spreadsheets are born.

Years later, while at Harvard, Bricklin began to formulate

the

groundwork for something that would eventually lead to his,

and one of the computer industries, most influential

products ever, VisiCalc.

The idea for the project stemmed

from Bricklins belief that computers could be used in the

business industry for more than just word processing. Up

until that point calculations that now seem simple and

practically error-free had to be done by hand. Not only was

the work long and tedious, but it often produced inaccurate

results.

Bricklin decided that a computer could do the job

faster, easier, and more accurately than had ever been done

before. His program would enable users to manipulate

numbers as easily as they could manipulate words. Budgets,

cost estimates, inventories, and investments could be

easily managed through one program. The benefit to the

business world would be tremendous.

Such a project, though,

required long hours of planning, coding, and testing.

Receiving a masters degree from Harvard was tough enough

without having to revolutionize the PC industry by himself.

Luckily his old friend from MIT, Bob Franksten, was around

to help. The two combined to take Bricklins idea from the

drawing board to a reality. With Bricklin designing the

interface and Franksten coding, the project was in full

swing. The two men formed Software Arts in 178 with the

express purpose of producing and (later) enhancing

VisiCalc. By the time Bricklin received his degree in 17

the product was ready for market.

At the same time changes were

being made in the hardware industry as well. Steve Jobs and

Steve Wozniak were in the process of creating their own

place in history. This was the era of the Apple Computer.

177 Apple is selling its Apple II for $1,15, including

16K of RAM but no monitor. (unbelievable)

For the first time small, relatively inexpensive computers

were available to the general public. There was only one

problem who wanted to buy a machine that did nothing

useful? What Jobs and Wozniak needed was the so-called

killer application; the one item that would turn the

computer from a curiosity into a necessity.

It was in 17 that VisiCalc was made

available to the public for use on the Apple II. The impact

was felt immediately. Software Arts develops the first

spreadsheet program,

Visicalc, by the spring of 17. It is released in October

and is an immediate success. Copies shipped per month rise

from 500 to 1,000 between 17 and 181.

Who would like to have been an affilliate then?

At $100 per copy the software was

being bought by just about anyone who could afford it.

Apples sales rose accordingly, as many people bought

computers just to be able to run VisiCalc. To capitalize on

the market Bricklin and Franksten made their product

available on many more platforms; most notable was a

version for IBM, which became available in 181.

Throughout all this Bricklin made the decision not to

patent VisiCalc, holding to his ideal that software should

not be proprietary.

Alas, the decision not to patent VisiCalc

would soon prove disastrous.

This allowed countless others to

develop and further his work. Products such as Lotus 1--

and Excel may never have materialized as quickly as they

did without Bricklins influence.

The Birth of Microsoft (opportunities are still around)

In December of 174, Allen was on his way to visit Gates

when along the way he stopped to browse the current

magazines. What he saw changed his and Bill Gatess lives

forever. On the cover of Popular Electronics was a picture

of the Altair 8080 and the headline Worlds First

Microcomputer Kit to Rival Commercial Models.

He bought

the issue and rushed over to Gatess dorm room. They both

recognized this as their big opportunity. The two knew

that the home computer market was about to explode and that

someone would need to make software for the new machines.

Within a few days, Gates had called MITS (Micro

Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems), the makers of the

Altair. He told the company that he and Allen had developed

a BASIC that could be used on the Altair . This was a lie.

They had not even written a line

of code. They had neither an Altair nor the chip that ran

the computer. The MITS company did not know this and was

very interested in seeing their BASIC. So, Gates and Allen

began working feverishly on the BASIC they had promised.

The code for the program was left mostly up to Bill Gates

while Paul Allen began working on a way to simulate the

Altair with the schools PDP-10.

Eight weeks later, the two

felt their program was ready. Allen was to fly to MITS and

show off their creation. The day after Allen arrived at

MITS, it was time to test their BASIC.

The program worked perfectly the first time.

MITS arranged a deal with Gates and Allen to buy

the rights to their BASIC. Gates

was convinced that the software market had been born.

Within a year, Bill Gates had dropped out of Harvard and

Microsoft was formed.

Bill gates speaking, now.

Documents on the Internet are

showing rapid improvement in terms of taking advantage of

whats possible. When people started out, they were mostly

taking the idea of a paper document and simply transferring

it to the screen. Now were seeing documents with pictures,

sound, motion, and interactivity. The opportunity here is

for creating a whole new document type

The next step...

Business computers have been able to read text aloud for

years, but systems and programs for use at home have

typically cost hundreds of dollars, and their quality,

design, and usability have varied wildly. But all of that

has changed with the introduction of new high quality and

affordable screen reading software.

Now it is possible for your computer read to you! You no

longer have to feel tied to your computer monitor in order

to get the information you needyou can perform other tasks

or simply sit and relax while listening to e-mail messages,

Microsoft Word documents, Adobe Acrobat files, or Internet

Explorer Web pages being read aloud to you in a natural,

pleasant, human-sounding voice.

In addition, screen-reading technology

offers assistance to users with vision, learning, or

physical disabilities that may make using a computer

difficult or impossible. Font size, volume control, and

speed control can be easily adjusted to suit individual

preferences, and programs are available now in both English

and Spanish, with more languages coming soon.

Be ready for the next step, judge for yourselves. The

technology

is alraedy being used, and its just about to break into

the home

market.

James Marshal Hendrix was born in Seattle, Washington on November the 7th, 14. Jimi had a style of guitar playing all of his own. He was renown for his rough style of playing. In this essay there will be comparisons made between Jimi and these other famous guitar players that were all around his era Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, John Lennon, Jimmy Page, Jose Feliciano and Carlos Santana. Jimi Hendrix was so different to other players. All these artists have/had varied styles of playing.

Eric Patrick Clapton was born on March 0, 145. He is an excellent musician. Eric plays blues/rock music. When he writes his music it is usually about things that has occurred in his life. One of his famous songs is Tears in Heaven. This was a tribute to his son that died from falling out of the fifty-third story of a block of apartments at the age of four. Eric's playing was very clean and tight, compared to Jimi's style, which is rougher. Each song Jimi wrote would have a main riff but each time he played it he would add different little riffs. Jimi played more rock and roll. Eric played more softer and smoother music.

Jimi Hendrix and Mark Knopfler are defiantly two of the best guitarists of all time. Mark was born on the 1th of August 14 in Scotland. He has been with many bands but since the 70's his main band has always been Dire Straits. Mark mostly plays rock and roll with his band but he is also well known as a solo artist. He is writes a lot of his bands songs, most of the songs are a sorts of clean rock and roll, a very different style to Jimi's songs. Mark did not have a drug addiction unlike Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton.

Born on October the th, 140 was legend, John Lennon. He is most famous for being one of the guitarists out of the band The Beatles. Sadly, John died on the 8th of December 180. He was shot in the back, on his front doorstep of his apartment by a fan. The Beatles played a very wide range of music, but when the Beatles broke up John went solo. Ballads seemed to be what he enjoyed playing most. Jimi Hendrix tended to play more rock and roll then John. Jimi's music was more orientated around guitar playing then Johns, because John Lennon seemed to concentrate more on the lyrics then anything else. John wasn't as well known for the skills of his guitar playing but more for his singing and overall music.

Englishman Jimmy Page was born on the th of January 144. He played in several rock bands but the band he has been mostly connected with is Led Zeppelin. While Jimmy has been in this band he has been performing mostly rock and roll, but before he joined Led Zeppelin he found out he was also great at playing acoustic guitar. Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix were both fairly similar, but there were differences with their view on life. Page seemed to have a rough sketch of where his music was taking him and maybe you could say he was a bit more organised then Hendrix. Hendrix way of living life was more relaxed and calm. The two as people were comparatively different but the two as guitar players were somewhat similar; Hendrix, seems to play more music that is at sometimes full on, whereas Page's style as a soloist was mostly smooth and clean, but at times he liked to play rock and roll.

Jose Feliciano was a Spanish man, born at Lares, Puerto Rico. He was born on the 10th of September 145. He has been blind since birth, but he does not let this disability hold him back. Although he started off playing pop and rock material, he changed his tune and turned to more mainstream Latin music. Jose moved to New York, (like Hendrix did) and by 16 had gained a lot of fame and respect. Feliciano has played with a few bands but has never really been committed to any one particular group. Hendrix and Jose are like chalk and cheese; they are completely different from each other, totally different style of playing and very different personalities.

Mexican, Carlos Santa was born on the 4th of July 147. Carlos at first was solely dedicated to playing jazz and funk, but as his fame grew he spread his talent further. He has played with many other well-known artists such as Matchbox 0 singer Rob Thomas and Macy Gray. In 167 he formed a band called Santana. The original line up consisted of a keyboard player, vocalist, drums, percussionists, rhythm guitar and lead guitar. As you can see it is a fairly large band. The band's Jimi Hendrix played with usually just had the basic drum kit, bass guitar, vocalist and guitar but Carlos likes bigger bands with lots of percussion and a solid beat. Carlos is relatively similar to Hendrix in that they both love to have lots of guitar solos in their songs but Carlos just seemed to have the edge on Hendrix, not because of what they played but because of how they executed their music. Their personalities where to some extent comparable but Carlos was much more controlled and organised then Hendrix ever was.

In conclusion, Jimi Hendrix was a very different musician to any other in his time and since. He was very laid back and unaware of the outside world. His music was so different compared to Mark Knopfler, John Lennon, Jimmy Page, Jose Feliciano and Carlos Santana because they wrote lyrics about things that happened in their life and world affairs, whereas Jimi wrote about the seedier side of life. Perhaps if Hendrix had of lived to the age of the other guitarists I have stated here, he might have changed his style of writing lyrics as his life changed and he matured.

At Zazzy Sports and Entertainment Company, we have the privilege to help and serve our clients. Some of our clients include colleges, universities, professional athletes, musical groups, singers, and many others. But today, we will be discussing one of our newest clients, Jorge Martinez. He is a professional Hispanic racecar driver involved with NASCAR as a member of the Elliott Race Team. Our objective is to produce 1.5 million dollars for our client. To produce 1.5 million dollars, we came up with various plans. First plan was to contact several companies. The companies we reached were Advance Auto Parts, Cheerios, Budweiser, Lowes, Panasonic, Dr. Pepper, Chiquita and Goodyear. Advance Auto Parts bought the Lower Hood part of the car, sponsoring 1 million dollars. Cheerios bought the B post of the car, sponsoring $150,000. Budweiser bought the C post of the car, sponsoring $50,000. Lowes bought the Deck lid of the car, sponsoring $750,000. Panasonic bought the TV Panel(rear) of the car for $500,000. Also, Dr. Pepper bought the side of the rear for $00,000, Chiquita bought the Lower Rear Quarter Panel for $100,000, and Goodyear bought the Front of Rear Tire for $50,000. As many of these sponsors promote their product on television, we figured that they can use Jorge Martinez to promote Hispanic audiences. We chose and asked Advance Auto Parts to have Jorge Martinez in their commercial to promote their product and to create huge attention toward Jorge Martinez. As Jorge Martinez appears on television, it created fans and another way to make more money. By having fans, we were able to sell merchandise including shirts, NASCAR working gloves, NASCAR model cars, hats, and jackets. The shirts were 0 dollars each, the NASCAR working gloves were 0 dollars each pair, the NASCAR model cars were 10 dollars each, the hats are 15 dollars each and the jackets were between $00.00-$00.00 (depending on size). Selling nation wide in Advance Auto Parts, we were able to sell 00 shirts, 150 working gloves, 50 model cars and 100 jackets. In merchandise, we were able to raise about $44,500. All together from sponsorships and merchandise our company raised $,44,500 for Jorge Martinez.

Our company chose the selected prospects because they were in fact very popular.

Advance Auto Parts, Cheerios, Budweiser, Lowes, Panasonic, Dr. Pepper, and Goodyear

are shown in commercials nation wide. As they all have been around a long time, we

knew they attracted many, many consumers. We indeed could have chosen others, but we

considered these to be the top prospects and top sponsors for NASCAR. Some of the

other prospects we could have chosen were Auto Zone or Federated Auto Parts, instead of

Advance Auto Parts, and Cheerios, instead of Kelloggs, Fruit Loops or Golden Grahams.

Instead of Budweiser, we could have also chosen Coors Light or Miller Light, and for

Lowes, we could have chosen Home Depot. Rather than Panasonic, we could have

chosen Sony, Hitachi, RCA, or Toshiba, and for Dr. Pepper, the choices went from Coca

Cola, Pepsi, 7-UP, Sprite, Mellow Yellow or Mountain dew. And finally for Goodyear,

we could have chosen Firestone or Bridgestone. These are called suggested leads, out of

all of these we only chose specific ones we knew that would be perfect sponsors for Jorge

Martinez. Our company has also prepared a Telephone script, but will be shown at the

end of this report.

Our company has prepared a chart to illustrate Jorge Martinez's features and

benefits chart, but it will be shown at the end of this report. We also created a sample

approach dialogue.

Our Company [walking up to Advance Auto Parts manager] Hello, Mr. Stevens.

As we already have done business before, I would like to talk to you about this other

offer.

Advance Auto Parts [smiles. shakes hand] Well, hello John. Sure, lets go to my

office and talk.

[both walk into Mr. Stevens office]

Advance Auto Parts [shows John a chair] Have a sit John.

Our Company [sits down and hands out information] Thank you, Mr. Stevens.

Now, about our business. We just received our newest client, Jorge Martinez. He is a

Hispanic, professional racecar driver involved with NASCAR. He will be driving a Ford

Thunderbird and he is a part of the Elliott Race Team. As you know, our company helps

the needs of the people but to help them, we also need your help.

Advance Auto Parts [crosses his hands and listens carefully] Well, John. I' am

somewhat interested but I would like to know more. How can Jorge Martinez help our

company?

Our Company [looks directly at him] As we get into more of the business, for

example, Jorge Martinez can appear in one of your commercials. With fans producing,

merchandise will be stocked at your stores nation wide and more people can come to your

stores to buy. It would give you business as well as giving Jorge Martinez the money he

needs.

Advance Auto Parts [scratches his chin and nods] Hmm.. I like the sound of

that. What offerings of the car do you have left?

Our Company [smiles. stands up and shows him the parts] We have the lower

hood for 1 million, and the deck lid for 750,000 and other that's shown on the paper.

Advance Auto Parts [nods yes] Yes, we will take the lower hood for 1 million.

Our Company [smiles happily and shakes hands with him] Thank you, Mr.

Stevens! Thank you for your time and business. I am sure Jorge Martinez will be happy to

hear this.

Advance Auto parts [shakes hand] No problem, John.

Customers provide a lot of information through their body angle, facial expressions, arms, hands, and legs. Each of these channels are very imperative in face-to-face communication. Like in body angle, back and forth motions indicate a positive outlook, while side-to-side movements suggest insecurity and doubt. The eyes are the most important area of the face. By looking at a customer's eyes, salespeople can often determine when their presentations have made an impression. Eye Position can indicate a customer's thought process. Eyes straight ahead mean a customer is passively receiving information but showing little effort to analyzing the meaning and not really concentrating on the presentation. Interpreting arm movements is intensity. Customers will use more arm movements when they are conveying an opinion. Hand gestures are extremely expressive. Like, open and relaxed hands are a positive signal, especially with palms facing up. Self-touching gestures typically indicate tension. The dialogue up there clearly shows good listening skills and effective questioning technique.

Product presentation is very important to get customers to buy. Here are two

sample selling sentences. 1) Here we have various parts you can buy ) If you can

help us, products like these can appear in your store that will attract more customers.

We also provided selling aids like a picture of Jorge Martinezs merchandise(work

gloves) and a picture of Jorge Martinezs toy cars. Some demonstrations of selling points

are 1) Having the gloves just as gloves and showing another with designs of Jorge

Martinezs car and number. ) Having a race car toy with great designs of Jorge

Martinezs car and having a plain car that says NASCAR. Jorge Martinez can also get

into the products by having his signature in every work glove and toy car.

Although most of our sponsors were satisfied, we also received objections such

as 1) I need more time to think about it. ) Our company cant afford that right now. We

came up with suggested answers to these objections. First, you shouldnt force them and

instead of arguing, listen. Some answers are 1) I understand. I would also want to have

time to think about it and talk to my partners. If you do we agree of what we have to

offer, you would be very satisfied) Oh that's no problem, Mr. X! We have different

pricing range that you can choose from. It gives the same benefits to your company. By

answering the objections correctly, some customers changed their minds.

To close to sale, there are many options of closing methods. Two suggestions are

Which Close and Direct close. When we did a Direct close, it went something like this

Company- Based on what Ive shown you, how do you feel about this idea?

Customer- Yes. I like it. Lets go talk to my partners and work on it.

This method is when you ask for the sale. It is used when you did not already get your

customers agreement. When we did a Which close, it went something like this

Company-Which one do you prefer? This lower hood for 1 million or the B post

for 15,000?

Customer- I prefer the lower hood for 1 million since it shows more of our

logo.

This method encourages a customer to make a decision between two items. It makes it

easy for a customer because only one simple decision must be made.

To get our sponsors satisfied, we suggested services. We guaranteed that more

customers will arrive at their store by sponsoring Jorge Martinez. We also suggested that

we will be the one stacking merchandise at their stores. When we talked about this, it

went something like this

Sponsor-How are we for sure that more customers will come to our store?

Company-We guarantee that more customers will come to your stores by giving

you posters to hang up at your store to attract them.

By giving the sponsors guarantees and other products, they were satisfied.

Some follow-up strategies we did are

1) Calling the sponsors the date we promised. ) We sent a thank you note with our

business card. ) We used time immediately after the sale to plan our next encounters

with the sponsors.

Zazzy Sports and Entertainment has completed our task. We have raised enough money for our new client, Jorge Martinez. He thanks all the sponsors that were involved with this project. He is now off to a good start thanks to all our companies, Advance Auto Parts, Cheerios, Budweiser, Lowes, Panasonic, Dr. Pepper, Chiquita and Goodyear.

The novel Brave New World by Aldous Huxley is a compelling tale of future society, which is controlled by a totalitarian government that challenges the very idea human individuality. The book takes place in the period of AF, After (Henry) Ford, in London, England after The Nine Years War has revolutionized the way the world is run. In this time period of science and technology, humans are no longer born, but manufactured, given lessons as children through hypnopaedic sleep teachings, categorized into five social castes, and given soma pills that take them on happy mental vacations to relieve them of the stresses of everyday life.

The first of the main characters is Bernard Marx, a lower class Alpha who fails to compare to other Alphas in physical stature. He is rumored to have had alcohol in his blood surrogate, making him physically inferior for his social caste. He does not possess typical views on life and questions traditional views on all aspects of life. While on a trip to the Savage Reservation in New Mexico, Bernard meets a primitive man named John. John is an outcast from the Indian culture he is living with. He and his mother Linda return with Bernard to London to experience this 'brave new world'. John does not fit well in modern society, having all his worldviews derived Shakespearean plays. John soon becomes quite a spectacle because of civilized people's curiosity towards savages. Meanwhile Linda is considered hideous because of her physical appearance and her motherhood.

At the other end of the spectrum from Bernard is Helmholtz Watson, a professor at the Emotional Engineering College. Watson is the pride of the Alpha class, having superior physical attributes. However he wishes he could make more of his writing and use his time in more worthwhile ways. He and Bernard Marx form a friendship based on their dissatisfaction with society. The last important character is Lenina Crowe, the average, typical Alpha female. Lenina's views on sex and soma are model opinions of the World State. She is deeply attracted to John, but merely on a sexual basis, while John wishes for a deeper relationship and eventually rejects her.

The modern world portrayed in this novel really is a sad indication of what our world might become someday based on our devotion to science and technology. Even though many scenes in the book can be quite shocking, it is not that far out. The World Controllers (government body) often resemble ideas of communism, the German culture in the years of Adolph Hitler, and the feudal period of the Middle Ages. The communism is supported by such hypnopaedic lessons as Everyone works for everyone else. Plus it is no coincidence that Bernard Marx's character is modeled after Karl Marx, one of the founding fathers of communism. The process by which imperfect embryos are discarded in the cause of manufacturing perfect ones is really an alternate form of Hitler's genocide. The five social castes are similar to the Feudal Age hierarchy, except that instead of nobles, clergy, and peasants, social classes are represented by Greek letters.

The new methods that are used to control the world populations go to rather sad extremes in order to maintain control and keep everyone happy. One of the most popular techniques is hypnopaedia. Through this process people are conditioned from infancy into late teenage years to accept their social class and deal with many other aspects of life. While giving students a tour of the Hatchery and Conditioning Centre in London, the DHC (Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning) explains the brainwashing procedure he likes to call conditioning. He shows the students an occasion in which Delta infants are electrically shocked while looking at flowers and pretty picture books. The goal is to mold their instincts to associate these images with terror and pain. Other lessons in caste awareness teach the kids to identify the classes by the color they wear and their function in society.

Another tool the World Controllers use to manage the planet is the limitation of books and science. Since these things stir emotion, and emotion can lead to instability, they are withheld from the people. Instead the World Controllers institute shows called feelies to provide a source of entertainment. Similar to movies, feelies give the people a source of artificial happiness. After John and Lenina attend a feely together, Lenina emerges from the show bubbling with excitement and joy. On the other hand John is rather disappointed, describing the show as horrible and ignoble.

The people have been censored from all knowledge deemed to old or too hard for them to understand. Near the end of the book World Controller Mustafa Mond discusses with John the type of books the people are allowed to read. John is shocked that the beauty and truth of Shakespeare and Othello's writing is forbidden to the people. Furthermore the identity of God has also been removed from the information given to the citizens. Instead of God people follow Ford. Since the book was first written in 1, the author chooses Henry Ford to be the new world symbol for the AF years. Mustafa Mond explains how God has not changed, but the people do. This therefore requires a new supreme being for the people to follow.

Brave New World is a compelling story of what the world may someday become because of our desire for science and technology. Some consider it a warning, while to others it is only science fiction. It makes one wonder if the future of our world will ever go to such extremes to ensure happiness. Abolishing our individuality to conform to society? Ridding ourselves of all past famous literature? Taking antidepressant pills everyday to keep ourselves content? Anything is possible for the future, but only time will tell.

FINDING THE CORRECT TREATMENT BALANCE

UNDER MEDICATING/OVER MEDICATING OR CAPASSION OFMEETING IN THE MIDDLE WITH DIGNITY

Many medical studies confirm that far too many patients die in pain in our hospitals, and that too many patients who are not terminally ill suffer unnecessarily from painful diseases, conditions, and medical treatments. In the past, courts have dealt with over prescribing and administering lethal doses of pain medication, but now courts are also addressing the issue of under medicating failures by care providers to manage a patient's pain. Although medical and nursing boards have disciplined physicians and nurses for giving too much medicine, the new trend is being reversed as inadequate pain management is investigated and physicians and nurses are being held responsible and disciplined for under managing pain. Liabilities for under medicating include negligence (medical malpractice) for failure to medicate or failure to refer pain to a pain management specialist.

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations has set pain management standards. JCAHO states that healthcare professionals need to recognize the right of patients to appropriate assessment and management. Assess the existence and, if so, the nature and intensity of pain in all patients. Record the results of the assessment in a way that facilitates regular reasoning and follow-up. Determine and assure staff competency in pain assessment and management. Establish policies and procedures that support the appropriate prescription ordering of effective pain mediations. Educate patients and their families about effective pain management. Address patient needs for symptom management in the discharge planning. ()

The Oregon board of medical examiners took disciplinary action against Dr. Paul A. Bilder, for improperly managing the treatment of pain in six of his patients between the dates of 1 and 1. These cases include; A 5 year old woman with pulmonary disease, on a mechanical ventilator in which he stopped giving sedatives and pain medication. The woman later became restless and pulled out her ventilator tube. Dr. Bidler did not return to reinsert the endotracheal tube and an emergency room physician performed the task. Refused to give a -year-old pneumonia patient with hypoxemia pain medicine and anxiety medications while inserting a breathing tube. The staff ended up restraining the patient to complete the procedure. An 8-year-old patient with congestive heart failure complained of not being able to breathe and was getting tired from his respiratory efforts. Dr. Bilder ordered Lasix, the symptoms continued and refused nurses request for morphine. Another physician medicated and stabilized the patient. A 6-year-old woman with pulmonary disease on a ventilator remained anxious despite paralytic agents. Dr. Bilder refused to order morphine for anxiety and pain control. Dr. Bilder refused to give a dying man of cancer adequate amounts of pain medications despite the nurse's plea. The man died three weeks later from his lung cancer. The last instance involved a man dying from cancer. The nurse requested stronger pain medicine and he ordered Roxanol .5 mg every four hours and Tylenol for a high fever over 10 degrees. This patient died that night. (1) Dr. Bilder refused to comment on this case and signed a statement acknowledging that his treatment showed unprofessional, dishonorable conduct and negligence. (1)

In addition, I would like to mention two other similar cases that went to trial. A jury awarded $1.5 million to the family (Bergman) of an 85-year-old man who's family accused his doctor of not prescribing enough pain medication during his final days. The other case was regarding Mr. Crawford who was transferred to the ICU from the cancer center. Mrs. Crawford stated, [My husband] screamed in pain the rest of his life. Very few had any sensitivity to the pain or their responsibility in managing that pain. Mr. Crawford's final words to his wife were, If I knew this is the way I would die, I would have died years ago of my lung or liver cancer, because I would have died an easier death. (10, 11)

The dilemma at hand is, why are we under medicating patients? Legal briefs states, When 7,74 nurses were asked which area ethical issues existed, pain relief and management was ranked first by 8%. Nurses often find themselves considering clinical actions that may may be ethically appropriate but raise legal concerns.()

Option # 1. Under medicating patients is not an intentional act. Under medicating principle of ethics can be considered as avoiding risks in order to insure that no harm is done. Pain happens, so patients must grin and bear it. To avoid pain is a sign of weakness. Many patients have multiple medical problems that perplex pain assessment. Pain medication also increases the likelihood of cognitive/sensory impairment and prevalence of depression. An over medicated patient may become confused and fall out of bed resulting in injury. If the patient is terminal and pain medication is given, the nurse may hasten their death or cause respiratory depression that could quicken their death. If you over medicate, this can be seen as euthanasia.

Option # . Many healthcare workers under medicate due to misconceptions about pain in the elderly. Another important factor is an unwarranted fear of addiction of the patient to the medication. Even when pain is detected and assessed, widespread and unjustified fear of addiction may preclude adequate treatment. Pain is not something that we can just put a Band-Aid on for relief. Nurses need to break the barrier to effective pain control and take pain as a high priority in patient care. We need to take on the important role in patient advocacy and education about pain management. Assessment of each patient's pain cannot be overemphasized. We play an important role in patient advocacy and education on pain management. Nurses need to promptly convey inadequate pain control to the pain management team and be an advocate for the patient.

No one needs to suffer intolerably till his or her death, from painful conditions or diseases. For around the clock pain, constant dosing is the key. Pain is a major stressor and the patient's worst memory of the intensive care unit. The first step is to recognize pain. Assume that all critically ill patients are in pain or at high risk for pain. Pain can be triggered by medical conditions such as ischemia, inflammation, infection, edema, diseases, and surgery. We need to also consider the invasive procedures and monitoring devices we use such as drains, catheters, endotracheal tubes, dressing changes and suctioning just to name a few, that can cause the patient to have more pain and discomfort. Some patients are at higher risk for poor pain management, especially those who are unable to verbally communicate because of intubation, chemically paralyzed, and those with altered mental status. (7,8)

Pain should be treated as the fifth vital sign. Every time a nurse takes the patients vital signs, the patient should be asked to rate their pain intensity from 0 to 10 on the Wong Baker scale. Patients deal with pain very differently and it is hard sometimes to know if you should give pain medicine or not. Pain is subjective and therefore we need to always believe the patient. Prevention of pain is the key. If the patient's pain is not controlled, it is the nurse's duty to report it. Nurses need to be aware of nonverbal indicators that the patient is in pain such as irritability, anxiousness, restlessness, moaning, crying, grimacing, change in vital signs, painful conditions, painful procedures, and reports from the family acting on the patients behalf. (6,8)

In conclusion, pain management is filled with ethical dilemmas. Ethical Standard E-.0 states, Physicians have an obligation to relieve pain and suffering and to promote the dignity and autonomy of dying patients in their care.() There must be accountability for physicians and nurses who ignore pain, allow their patients to needlessly suffer and they must face the consequences. We have the moral, legal, and an ethical duty to provide appropriate care to our patients. These cases have alerted physicians and nurses as they become increasingly aware of the importance of statutes and regulations addressing appropriate pain care, including JCAHO standards and federal and state legislation related to adequate pain control. Nurses need to implement JCAHO pain standards to improve pain management as the ultimate goal rather than simply meeting the new standards. The most important aspect of all pain control is to communicate with your patient. Be aware of those in pain (even when they cannot tell you about it) and address the pain aggressively. Keep the patient informed and reassured. We need to keep an ongoing pain assessment, titrate analgesics effectively, manage adverse effects and complications, use non-pharmacological interventions, educate the patient and family, document pain management effectively and be aware of liability issues. One of the most important things that a nurse can do is familiarize themselves with issues that affect their practice, including state and federal laws and establish lines of authority and accountability for pain management. Adverting liability is to promptly report under treatment of pain.(4)
