Macbeths descent into tyranny

At the start of the play, we see Shakespeare introduce Macbeth's character (act1 scene).

The Captain who had fought in the battle for Chowder describes Macbeths as brave, several times referring to his bravery as 'valour's minion', the lion or the Eagle to the enemies hare or sparrow. This is useful to us, because it shows us what the ordinary soldier thinks of Macbeths. We are also shown what the thanes think of Macbeth at the beginning, when Duncan calls him 'noble Macbeth'. So, at the start of the play we are introduced to a brave nobleman.

In scene 4, we see a hint at the ending of the play, were Duncan and Malcolm discusses the thane of Cawdor. Duncan says that he thought he could trust him, and that you cannot judge a man on his outwards appearance, as the thane of Cawdor redeemed himself at his death. We will see a similar theme occur in the rest of the story.

Later in that same scene, we see the first glimpse of Macbeth's deep desire to see the prophecy fulfilled. 'Do not let light see my black and deep desires' this shows us he knows what he wants, but doesn't want to do what he has to do in order to get it.

Moving onto scene 7, we see Macbeth struggle with his conscience about the murder, and give thought to the implications of the assassination. We see him use words like 'assassination' instead of murder, because he is trying to convince himself that this is for the good of everyone, and not simply for his own ambition. We see that he knows it is wrong, 'I am his kinsman and his subject, strong both against the deed'. We also see that he well knows the cost of the deed, 'the deep damnation of his taking off'. But none of this stops Macbeth, for his 'vaulting ambition' is too important now. He would rather become king, and live an easy life on earth while knowing he will suffer in hell, than do the right thing and go to heaven. He decides he cannot go through with it, until Lady Macbeth arrives and accuses him of cowardice. 'When you durst do it, then you were a man' she says, and then says that had she promised to, she would 'dash the brains out' of her baby if he had so asked. It is here that we see the Macbeth is not quite how he is first portrayed, he is under the control of his wife, and she knows she can get him to do anything she wants by insulting his manhood. This is the first major change in his personality that we see. He has gone from brave and noble to weak and indecisive.

Act sees Macbeth make his move to murder Duncan, and he encounters Banquo on the way. When Banquo says that he has dreamt of the witches, Macbeth lies 'I think of them not' telling us that he feels he has to lie to his best friend. This shows us he knows he is doing wrong.

When he moves into kill Duncan, Macbeths thinks of evil images such as Hecate, Tarquin, a dagger, wolves, witches and 'gouts of blood'. We can see from this that he sees this as an evil deed, and doesn't really want to go through with it. But his ambition, and pressure from his wife makes him go through with it.

After the murder is done, we see Macbeth confront his wife, and she tells him to wipe the blood on to the guards so that they will be blamed for the murder, but Macbeth will not go back. 'Ill go no more, I am afraid to think what I have done' this is very interesting, because he is totally refusing to do what she tells him, and at the end he says 'wake Duncan with your knocking, I would thou couldst'. This shows us that Macbeth repents what he has done and wishes he could bring Duncan back to life. Here we feel slightly sorry for Macbeth because he did not want to carry out the murder, but was pushed into it.

Once the Thanes have discovered Duncan body, we see Macbeth panicking. He murders Duncan's guards almost as if it were to make himself feel better about the crime he had just committed. When he speaks of Duncan he uses elaborate wording, and goes into huge speeches, which are so poetic, they could not have been made up on the spot. Lady Macbeth then faints to divert attention away from Macbeth before he gives the game up.

In act , Macbeth calls in Murderers to kill Banquo. This is interesting because before now, Macbeth has killed everyone himself. But now he gets people in to do it for him. We also see him use the same tactic on them that Lady Macbeth employed on him. 'In the catalogue, ye go for men' we see here that Macbeth has become more ruthless in his dealings, the more people he kills, the less it worries him.

The murder of Banquo is different from the others in that it is not really serving any purpose. Banquo is not standing in his way, as he is already king but, 'our fears in Banquo stick deep', even though the witches have said that he shall never be king. So Macbeth is probably doing this to kill Fleance as well.

Macbeth has given the murderers a location and a time to kill Banquo, but is not doing it himself, which also shows us that he is becoming less bothered with the morality of the deed.

The appearance of Banquos ghost is a strange occurrence, and we are not sure whether it is an image in Macbeths mind caused by guilt 'make our faces vizards to our hearts', or an actual metaphysical presence. If it is just an image caused by his guilt, then it shows us that Macbeth has been driven into insanity by his dealings. We no longer feel sorry for Macbeth, because Banquos murder was totally of his own doing, and was not spurred on by his wife. Were as before it was made clear to us by Shakespeare that it was a mistake which Macbeth only later realised.

Act 4 sees Macbeth return to the Witches, to ask them more. The 'weird sisters' show him that he 'will not be killed by one of woman born' and that he shall not die until 'Birnham wood to Dunsidane hill shall come against him'. But he is also warned to beware Macduff.

Macbeth has started to hear only what he wants, however. He decides not to kill Macduff ' then live Macduff, for what need I fear of thee'. But he does have Macduffs family murdered, as he

Believes Macduff cannot hurt him, but he should still dissuade him from action against Macbeth. He also believes that he is totally invincible because of the vague nature of the prophecies. If Macbeth totally believed the prophecies, however, he would have not tried to have Fleance killed. As he would've known it would fail.

Act 5 sees a role-reversal between Macbeth and his wife. She is now overcome with guilt, and has been driven insane, whereas Macbeth is confident, and believes he is invincible 'fear not Macbeth, for no man born of woman shall hold power over thee'.

When the servant arrives with news of the arrival of the English forces, Macbeth dismisses it. He believes that no one can harm him. We also see that Macbeth has become a tyrant 'hang those that talk of fear'. Macbeth has become a murdering, lying, backstabbing tyrant in almost no time at all. At this point, the audience feels no pity for him whatsoever. He has stopped caring about almost anything. He no longer cares for his wife. It doesn't bother him that the doctor sees her as incurable, he ignores it, and orders her cured. He hasn't actually listened to what the doctor has to say 'throw physic to the dogs'.

When the servant tells Macbeth that Birnham wood had begun to move, Macbeth simply yells at him 'liar and slave'. He has no time for bad news, and has become so over-confident, that he doesn't care about such news any longer.

Macbeth is confronted by siwards son in the oncoming siege, and slaughters him ' though was born of woman..Weapons laugh to scorn brandished by a man of woman born'. This shows us that Macbeth has totally absorbed himself in the prophecy, and believes that he cannot be slain.

It is at the end of the play, in the fight between Macduff and Macbeth that we see Macbeth return to his original self. Macduff tells him that he had a Caesarean birth, he offers Macbeth the chance to yield and 'live to be the show'. But Macbeth refuses, and decides to die fighting, in the style of the Macbeth we saw at the beginning, who is brave, and thinks nothing of fighting against the odds. The audience does end up feeling sorry for Macbeth at the end, once he has returned to his former attitude. Because, like the thane of Cawdor before him, 'nothing became him in his life like leaving it'.

great movie, and is an outstanding form of popular culture. There are many different events that take place throughout this film that show this.

Field of Dreams stars Kevin Costner and James Earl Jones. Costner plays a guy named Ray who, one day while working in his corn field, hears a voice. The voice tells him, If you build it, he will come. After he hears the voice a few times he tears down his corn field, and builds a baseball field. Jones plays a retired author named Thomas Mann. Mann hears these voices also, and understands what Ray is going through. Reluctantly Mann goes along with Ray. After awhile old members of the White Sox, who got banned from baseball for life, appear out of the corn field. They now have a chance to play ball again. Mann ends up going back into the corn with the players in the end.

This movie is more than just a movie about a sport. It has many other significant meanings. First of all, this film shows loyalty between Ray's wife and him. Most wives would think their husbands were crazy if they told them they heard voices, which were telling them to build a baseball field. It's going to take a ton of money, and also a lot of knowledge on how to go about doing it. It show how she believed in him when no one else would listen. She stuck by her husband like a wife is supposed to do, and gave him support when needed. I believe a lot of Americans liked seeing that type of commitment between two people, especially in a world where it's not as prevalent as it should be.

The second point this film shows is how much Ray loves baseball. Baseball has been a major part of American society and culture since the late 1800's. It is known as America's pastime. Throughout the film it is made very evident of the love Ray displays for the great game of baseball. The amount of money he spends to make the field says enough. One scene shows Ray on a tractor as he is plowing a field in preparation for the building of the stadium. His daughter is sitting on his lap. She is asking him all kinds of questions about baseball, and Ray answers all of them in a way that you can tell he loves talking about it. Another scene shows him driving across the country to find help for what he is doing. The sacrifices he makes for the game are incredible. Being a huge baseball fan this movie shows everything that is right about baseball. It shows that it is a game, and should be played for the fun of it.

The third point this film makes is it allows the dreams of the players to live on. People having dreams is what makes the world happen. Without having a dream no one goes anywhere. In this film members of the old White Sox team that got banned from baseball are able to get back into the game, and once again live out the dreams and fantasies of playing the game they love. It kind of gives people hope, in a sense, not to give up.

Still another point this film makes is in the world of relationships. The film shows the relations between a father and son. Ray finds out that one of the players who comes back to play is his father. He realizes that is what the voice was telling him. His father was the one who would come back if he built the field. While he was growing up he didn't have the greatest relationship with his father. His father died while he was at a rather young age. Ray is aware that it is his father. Ray's father is young so he has no idea he is his son. That didn't matter though. Just to know that his father is back once again is enough for Ray. This is a problem many people in the world face. Lots of fathers and sons don't have good relationships with each other. There are many reasons for this. This movie is one that people can relate with in a way. Many times there are things left unsaid when one dies. This could influence people to make things happen while the opportunity is still there, and to not waste the time they have.

In conclusion I would just like to say that while there are many aspects of the film industry that are bad for society, this film shows nothing but good things about the film industry. Like I said previously, it is more than just a movie about a sport. It goes greater in depth with different situations. These are situations people can relate with, and that they care about. This is a good example of popular culture. I do not feel as though it exploits or distracts people from other forms of culture, however. Some movies obviously do, but this is not that type of film.

Gel Test successful after the rd time.

Section 7 Analysis

There are several differences between the Kiwi Jam and Apple Jam.

The flavour of both the Kiwi and the Apple jam are both that of sweet and fruity however there are some differences. The Kiwi jam is definetly a much more sugary tasting and sweet, where as the Apple jam is more bland with a touch of ginger.

The Kiwi jam was a light brown, dark green colour with black kiwi seeds and little white pieces of the kiwi fruit. The Apple jam was more of a tan brown in colour with a bit of yellow texture to it with slightly large pieces of apple in the jam.

Section 8 Recommendations

There are lots of things that can go wrong in cooking jams and there are a few tips and recommendations that could be suggested for a better outcome.

Always remember to sterilise your jars before you cook your jam.

You should leave the sugar and kiwi in the bowel for longer than the recipe, so the sugar has a lot of time to absorb.

Be sure after you bring the fruit to the boil that you then reduce the temperature until the fruit is at a gentle simmer. It is important that you don't have the temperature too high to speed up the cooking process as you will only make the fruit stick to the bottom of your pan and will ultimately result in burnt, discoloured jam.

Remember safety is the most important thing, making this jam can be very dangerous if you do not follow the safety precautions.

Section Conclusion

In conclusion from the prac, my favourite of the jams would have to be the Kiwi because I liked the sweet taste. Perhaps if the Apple jam had more flavour to it I would enjoy it more. The apple I think needed to be cooked longer as it tasted not finished.

I think definetly the Kiwi jam came out better than the Apple jam although as jam was a little burnt. It tasted better and the appearance of the Kiwi jam I think looked a lot better than the Apple jam. The Apple jam was boring.

In this article I will talk about whether I think Malcolm X is an American hero or not . Also I will write some of his quotes and share my opinion on them. I think as far as what he was trying to do before he died he was not an American Hero. I think that if he would have lived to finish what he had started for his African American people and for what he believed in with his Muslim religion a American hero title would have been given to him.

Malcolm X was a very intelligent man when it came to speaking out for what he believed in, or how he thought Black Americans should be treated. Malcolm was an out spoken person but as far as an American hero it was something he really didn't fall under. I believed that an American hero is someone who can help people with the different struggles that they are facing in their life without violence but with smart action. Don't get me wrong, what Malcolm did show his people how to fight with words. His action were not always the smartest thing to do.

To a lot of white people he was not an American hero, but the most of the black he was. Right now my knowledge was not but I really don't know much about what he has contributed to the freedom and right that we have to day.

One of the quotes that I will reply to is every time I here Martin Luther King I Have A Dream speech, I think Negro leaders have to come out of the clouds and wake up and stop dreaming and start facing reality. (interview with Claude Lewis (December 164) . What I fell this quote talk about is the speech that Dr. King had given was not a bad thing to think about but as far as where we were in a society we needed to deal what we were facing now and think what we wanted life to be like in the future and deal with it later.

Swimming was invented before recorded history. Humans discovered how to swim by accident. A person probably fell into the water and struggled to shore using a dog-paddle stroke. There was an Egyptian hieroglyph for swimming dating from 500 BC. The ancient Greeks and Romans made swimming an important part of their military training programs. There have been known swimming contests that were organized in Japan as early as the 1st century BC.

During the Middle Ages in Europe, swimming declined in popularity. People felt that the water was contaminated and a source of disease. Not everyone feared the water, however, Louis XI reportedly swam daily in the Seine.

During the early 1th century, swimming enjoyed a revival, especially in England, Lord Byron swam the Dardanelles river, to prove that the mythological hero Leander could have done it. Organized competitive swimming began in England in the 1840s.

In 1844 the British were surprised when two American Indians demonstrated the efficiency of a method of swimming similar to the modern crawl. The British still swam with the head above the water, a holdover from the days when people believed that the water was contaminated.

An overhand stroke was introduced into England in 187 by J. Arthur Trudgen, who had seen South American Indians using this method to swim really fast. When the flutter kick was introduced, the modern Australian crawl was born, and this stroke has since become the most common and most important swimming stroke.

FITNESS COMPONENTS

To swim well u need to know how to coordinate your arms and legs to get you through the water. At first you will probably need to have lessons. Also to swim u need agility and just gravity. Swimming also requires balance and quickness in some cases.

Not much is needed to know if you want to swim.

Swimming improves heart and lung efficiency, enhances muscle strength and endurance, improves flexibility, and reduces stress. Its easy on the joints, and uses more muscles than most other forms of exercise. Although swimming burns a great deal of calories, recreational swimmers tend to lose less weight than would be expected from other types of aerobic activity. Scientists say that cold water removes heat from the body, stimulating appetite to keep the body warm. Exposure to cold water may encourage the body to maintain fat stores for insulation. To lose weight by swimming, its necessary to cut down on the calories you eat, and to swim fast enough and long enough.

Swimming can burn more than 660 calories an hour when performed correctly and causes less injuries to joints and muscles than aerobics or jogging. It takes only three hours a week of strenuous swimming to improve flexibility, increase strength and build cardiovascular endurance. Swimming provides a good aerobic workout if 5% of the total laps are performed at maximum intensity. However, only 5% of those who swim do so at an aerobic pace.

Although few doubt the aerobic benefits of swimming, studies comparing swimming with jogging, results found that swimmers lost less body fat than joggers.

Apparently swimming causes an adjustment in how energy is burned, resulting in the burning of more carbohydrates than body fat. One reason might be that swimmers retain more body fat to insulate and maintain body heat. However, swimming works both the upper and lower body which jogging does not.
