1, Introduction

Development of communication technology allows people to communicate with people easily in other countries. However, there are still large barriers in verbal communication. Consequently, translation plays an important role in daily life. The demand for translation is increasing in business scenes.

This report is a description of the Advanced Diploma of Translating course at Adelaide Institute of TAFE. It mentions specifications of contents, organization, case studies, and other information. The aim of this course is to train to professional standard translator as required by NAATI (Australia National Accreditation) level. The qualification of translating is useful for students to the future career plan and to expand the work range. (Refer to appendix 6)

, Application Process

The application process for students is simple. There are two entry requirement alternatives, which are described.

The application process (Advanced Diploma of Translating)

In this course, all applicants must have appropriate language proficiency in English and LOTE (Language other than English). For international students, there are also two alternatives. One of the ways to enter this course is following the Diploma of Interpreting course. Direct application is enable to students who have IELTS score 6.5. This course is provided for Mandarin and Japanese.

The language level of entry requirement is very high in this course. It indicates that translating needs extremely high language skills. (Refer to appendix 6)

In order to train the students for NAATI level translator, the course contents focus as written below.

•Research skills; to translate accurately and efficiently

•Comprehending of cultural relevance, the translation of cultural meaning and the role of the translator.

•Understanding of the context, purpose, intentional of text and language structure (English/LOTE).

•Recognition of different style and registers; manipulation of text.

•Use an issues of Machine aided translating

•Computer knowledge and computing skills

•Basic business skills (Invoicing, basic record keeping and accounting, etc)

6, Assessment Procedures

Students must obtain a score of 70% in at least one direction (English to LOTE/ LOTE to English) to receive the Advanced Diploma of Translating. The assessment may include

Translation assignment (English to LOTE, LOTE to English) 400-600 word.

(Assignment topics are usually newspaper, magazine, and Internet article.)

In translating skills, accuracy is essential and moreover efficient writing is necessary. Therefore it is very hard to obtain the score of 70% but if students do obtain this score, they will receive NAATI as professional Translator. (Refer to appendix 4)

7, Possible job prospect

The demand for translators is increasing in global business scene. The prospective jobs are similar to Australia and LOTE countries as written below.

In his case, he found difficulty in Japanese phrase rather than English. He realized the complexity of Japanese. He said the course contents are more than his expectation. But he still needs substantial self-study in both English and Japanese writing. He thought that one of the features of the translating is the need for native language skills. (Refer to appendix )

Student name Yu (Japanese) IELTS 6.5 and passed the entry exam.

She said technical words are very difficult both English and Japanese. The course contents are very practical and useful but extra extensive knowledge and vocabulary are necessary for accurate translating.

In her opinion, the way to study translating depends on the each person's purpose and preparation. This course needs substantial self-study therefore preparation is important. (Refer to appendix 4)

Interview 4

Student name Zhou (Chinese) IELTS 7.0 and passed the entry exam.

She graduated the University of South Australia, and then NAATI office informed her about this course. She said that skilful writing is really difficult even Chinese, therefore writing exercises are essential especially to obtain NAATI. Book World portrays it as being pure silliness. I don't feel that this is the case. There is plenty of good fact in this book, but along with the fact comes much analysis. Book World also states in the review that it is missing much information, which I disagree with. They say that Nixon's childhood is vague, but in fact I got much out of this book about his childhood. It may not have been on the surface of reading the book, but it was there. I do feel though that there were significant parts to the book not so much as missing, but scattered throughout the book. The book could have been much easier to read if it were set in chronological order by the dates leading up to the most recent details of Richard Nixon's life. I do agree with the last sentence of the review in that Richard Nixon is in fact a very complex person, and for his thoughts to be analyzed along with his actions would be almost impossible to strike square on the nose.

The second review by The New York Times is very complementary compared to Book World's review. Here they are saying that his book is quite an accomplishment with much value to his fellow psycho-historians. I feel that if you are one of analysis, this book is definitely for you because it contains pure fact, along with major analysis. Although it is a book of high regards, I don't feel that it is portrayed in an orderly fashion. Mazlish is very choppy in how he goes about the different sections of the book. He jumps from subject to subject and from year to year like the reader is supposed to totally be following his every word. I can tell from his writing that Mazlish is a very intelligent man and that many people, if into the psycho-historical outlook, would enjoy this book. I also agree with New York Times that this book is very mild in terms of judgment upon Nixon.

Richard M. Nixon was born on January th, 11 in Yorba Linda, California. He lived with his mother and father and four other brothers. His grandmother was said to have set the standards for the whole family with humanitarian ideals. She had strong feelings on pacifism and civil liberties. Nixon acquired the Protestant Ethic from his mother, Hannah Milhous, which played a huge role in his life. The first many years for this family was very hard, being that Nixon's older brother Harold was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Hannah and Harold moved away from the family to Arizona in hopes of finding a cure, leaving the other three kids and their father, Frank, home alone. In the midst of all this, Arthur, the youngest boy, developed tubercular meningitis and died a week after becoming ill. Hannah and Harold returned with no cure and shortly thereafter, Harold passed away as well. In accumulation of his boyhood, it can be thought that Richard Nixon felt betrayed by his mother, guilt over death wishes, and anxiety over death fears. (6)

Richard Nixon's father was not nearly as successful as Richard would end up turning out to be. He was known as a man of many jobs who never ultimately succeeded. It is thought that Richard went from a man of his mother being hard working and persistent to a man of his father with dislike of newspapermen and love of campaigns. Richard felt the need to redeem his father by being successful. It was said that Richard's father was an inspiration to become a lawyer and enter politics. Frank gave up Methodism when he married Hannah and they raised their kids as Quakers which had a great influence on Richard Nixon's life.

Richard attended Duke Law School where he became quite successful. He was elected president of the freshman class, and as a junior became chairman of traditional undergrad escapade. This is where Nixon found that his ability was verbal and that he was a debater. After graduation he went job hunting in New York. This found itself to be unsuccessful so he returned to Whitter, his home town, to practice law where he became involved in the Southern Strategy, the East, and big cities.

Nixon soon found himself in love with a woman named Pat Ryan. With the outbreak of WWII these newlyweds found themselves in Washington D.C. where Nixon worked for the Office of Price Administration. Nixon obtained a commission and served in the South Pacific between 14 and 146. Nixon's views on government and domestic and foreign policy were greatly affected by WWII and The Great Depression.

By the age of , Nixon was elected to the Eightieth Congress where he served two terms, then ran successfully for the Senate in 150. At the age of he was elected Vice President. In 168 Nixon won the presidency in an almost equally close contest and was re-elected in 17.

Nixon's campaigning used methods of political packaging techniques along with communism innuendos. He became known as a product of the Cold War who would do anything to win an election. Nixon came to be a strong Republican.

In 16, when Nixon ran for governor of California and lost, he was driven to New York where he joined the law firm of his earlier dreams. After this move, he worked at gaining a good reputation and in 17, Nixon ran for President and won by a landslide with 50 electoral votes to 17 and a margin of almost 18 million popular votes.

Nixon went about a course in both foreign and domestic policy that attempted to update Federalism, to restore the entire welfare system with the idea of a guaranteed annual income, and worked to promote a grand design for U.S. diplomacy.

Domestic Policy Nixon's domestic programs were described as the New American Revolution. He pursued reform in five domestic areas economic policy, welfare policy, civil rights policy, environmental policy, and reorganization of the executive branch of government all through administrative action. Nixon considered his success in desegregating southern schools and his Supreme Court appointments his most important achievements in domestic policy. Other domestic achievements by Nixon included his wars against cancer, labor legislation, crime, taxes, welfare, illegal drugs, and hunger along with revenue sharing and environmental and land-use policies. Nixon's civil rights enforcement budget for fiscal 17 represented an eightfold increase over Johnson's for 16.

Domestic Policy Nixon began working with Henry Kissinger in 168 when they created the first system for managing foreign policy under White House domination by reorganizing the NSC, making the NSC the principal foreign policy forum in the White House. Saint Saturnius, later francized to sernin, was martyred on November in the year 50 for failing to sacrifice to the pagan gods that the Romans forced upon his people. After being dragged to death by a bull he was buried, and at the end of the 4th century a basilica was constructed above his tomb. This building was replaced in the late 11th century by the Saint Sernin basilica (see appendix, 1ab) that is currently in Toulouse, France, a town positioned on the Garronne River a short distance from its union with the Ariege River. Measuring in at 115 m long and 1.1 m high this new structure is the largest of the churches along the principle routes to Santiago de Compostela in France and upper Spain known as the pilgrimage churches (see appendix, ).

The building of this basilica is credited to Bishop Petrus Rogerius. However, canon Raymond Gairard is also recognized as the constructor of the body of the church before he died in 1118. Even though additions continued through the 16th century, the building was consecrated in 111. These additions were the result of the need for expansion due to the increasing number of pilgrims who passed through the church. Viollet-le-Duc completed the final major restoration of Saint Sernin in 1860. This building has survived intact since then, and is considered an extremely important Christian landmark.

Saint Sernin is a cruciform basilica with quite a large square based, proportional structure. Twin portals open to a five-aisled barrel vault nave with eleven bays. The nave is intersected at the transept with a square crossing and an octagonal tower. Two other western towers were also to be added, but were never completed. The ambulatory encircling the crypt includes five projecting chapels. The aisle continues along the perimeter of the church with tribunes along the way as far as the west facade. Stone and brick comprise the piers and wall spans that lead up to large tribune windows. These windows that replace a clerestory are supported by quadrant and barrel vaulting and let in massive amounts of light creating a very open, airy interior. The reliquary is elevated to allow viewing from the main ambulatory, and it includes Gothic details such as rib vaulting.

Decoration is very important in Saint Sernin. Relief, carved capitols, plates, and portals all add to the incredible beauty of the building. Two sculpture programmes were planned in the 11th century for this church. The first of these programmes focused on the image of Saint Sernin encompassed with lions, and included themes of punishment and deliverance. There was definite consistency in the carving of the limestone used, especially in humans. For example, oval heads, double incision eyes, single incision mouths, and vertically folded drapery in arched patterns were constantly used.

In the second programme, marble reliefs and ivory carvings were produced. A major work to come from this programme was the Porte Miegeville (see appendix, ). The Porte Miegeville is a recessed portal, depicting the following sculptures the ascension of Christ on the tympanum, two Old Testament prophets with the twelve apostles on the lintel, and Saints Peter and James in the spandrels all in the plastic style developed along the pilgrimage routes (Zarnecki, 57). Other important works to come from the second programme are the Marble altar table and Maiestas Domini (see appendix, 4ab), a marble relief, both produced by the famous pilgrimage church sculptor Bernardus Gelduinus. Gelduinus, a sculptor from the Romanesque period is known for his great pieces, and simply because he's the only one to sign his works.

Relics are a very important part of the sacred value of Saint Sernin. Pilgrams came in droves to view the many relics housed inside the chapels of the church on their way to Santiago de Compostela. The most important of the relics held by Saint Sernin are obviously those of Saint Saturnin himself. These relics are stored in the reliquary of Saint Saturnin and the golden mounting of Saint Saturnin in the crypt of the basilica (see appendix, 5ab). Another important relic to the basilica is the reliquary of the True Cross. This reliquary is covered in the noteworthy enameled copper work that tells the story of the true cross (see appendix, 6).

Externally, the Saint Sernin basilica conveys power and magnificence in the intricate eastern façade and tower, while displaying grace and relation to average people in the western façade. Internally, the structure seems overpowering in height and spaciousness, while remaining subtle in much of its dcor. Saint Sernin exemplifies one of the greatest achievements of the medieval period in the history of art. This Christian stronghold houses many relics, sculptures, and a history that has become very important to the religious world.

Without that diary, I would have probably never known that he met my great grandmother at a diner that his father owned. I would have never discovered that when my grandparents met he hated my grandfather because of his shaggy haircut. Bits and pieces of my family's past, as well as my own were found in these writings. On a more immediate level, I still look back on journal entries that I wrote from when I was younger. It is amazing how vivid the memories still are. It is almost as if they were frozen in time just waiting patiently for me to come back and remember them. As I read some of my writings I cannot help but laugh. It is strange how a situation at the time can seem so horrible but, three or five years later, it just seems funny and there appears to be nothing horrible about it. I have found that writing and time tend to put things into perspective. I can only hope that my journals will assist my family and I by putting things into that perspective that they sometimes need, and by leaving a trail of history behind wherever they go.

Writing encompasses my daily life in the present, not only as an active college student, but also at home. I was born overseas and have many friends and relatives that live scattered about the country and the world. The primary way that I maintain ties and connections with them is through writing letters and emails. Some of my best friends live across the country and by writing to them it has preserved some of the most valued friendships that I have. Another way that writing is involved in my life is when I begin writing in a journal about things that are bothering or upsetting me. It serves as an outlet for my emotions. Writing has the unique ability to listen to problems without placing judgment and I feel writing serves me best this way. I am a very passionate and opinionated person and, whether that is good or bad, I do have a lot to say and am not always free to express those thoughts. When this happens, I begin writing. As the words flow from my mind to the paper, I am free to write down anything I feel knowing I will not be judged or characterized in any way. In chapter one, Gregor Samsa awakes one morning to finds out that he has been transformed into a giant insect. As soon as he realizes that he's a bug, he also finds out that he overslept. But it doesn't help because Gregor doesn't know how to express himself to his family. They become scared and disgusted by his appearance, so his father throws an apple at Gregor and he gets and big wound. To make some money, the family decides to take in three lodgers, using Gregors room to store all the extra furniture. Yet the family does leave Gregors door slightly open in the evenings, so that he can see what is going on in the household. One evening, the lodgers hear Grete practicing her violin. They call her into the living room, so she can play in front of them. Since Gregor loves her playing so much that he creeps out and starts walking towards her, trying to tell her that he sees her talent and will help it blossom. After the lodgers see Gregor, they start yelling and asking why haven't they been seen this insect before. Then they say that because of this incident they will not pay the rent and leave immediately the next day. This is the breaking point for the family. Grete declares that they cannot take care of Gregor anymore and if this would be

the real Gregor then he would leave the house. After all the talking they decide that they have to get rid of him. Unfortunately they don't get to see him after that night, because he dies. After a second of mourning, the father tells the lodgers to leave immediately. Then they move to the countryside. At the end, the author describes a beautiful, sunny day, and Grete's parents think of finding her a husband.

In the beginning, when Gregor is transformed, you can definitely see that he is not surprised at all. He becomes an insect and the only thought that bothers him is the fact that he cannot get up for work. This implies that his job is his first priority and being an insect does not surprise him at all. There are three points in chapter one to back up this idea. After he starts to feel an ache on his body, he begins to think, Oh God, he thought, what an exhausting job I've picked on! Then he looks at the clock and realizes that he overslept and missed the train. He starts worrying about how he will get to work. Last example is when a clerk from his company comes to his house, Gregor is not worried at all by his appearance and he tries to open the door to show the clerk the reason he didn't come to work. Naturally, the clerk was horrified and ran away.

After Gregor woke up and felt an ache on his body, he immediately remembered that he has a job, which he absolutely hates. If this had happened to a normal person, the person would probably have a heart attack. At first he talks about his new body and then he starts rambling on about his work. This shows his indifference to the situation and that he accepts this transformation like it was supposed to happen.

After he's done thinking of how much he hates his job, he realizes that he is late for work. How can you be worried about getting to work, when you just turned into an insect? It looks like the more he is worried about his job; the closer he gets to fully transforming into a bug. His indifference gives a push to his metamorphosis. For example, when he tries to get out of his room to get to work, his voice starts to change. When he yells to his mother that he'll be right now, she even notices the change in his voice.

At last, when a clerk from his company comes to his house, Gregor is worried about getting the door open so he can show him why he didn't come to work. The thought that everyone might be horrified didn't even cross his mind. The only thing that he thought about is getting out, showing why he was late and getting to work. This situation repeats in this story, when he decides to come out of his room while his sister is playing the violin. He also does not think that it will scare his family, not to mention the lodgers.

Through the whole story, his family is more upset about his metamorphosis than he is. While his sister is worried about what food he wants to eat, he climbs on walls and swings from the ceiling. While his mother tries to get the furniture out of the room so it would be more comfortable for him, he is worried about the picture. Overall, the transformation was not completed until he became totally indifferent to the situation.
