Over the years, efforts have been made to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Solar power, a renewable energy source, may possibly be one of the best technological advances of this century in order to resolve the problems associated with our dwindling fuel supply. While solar energy has already been developed and even in use in some areas of the world, the United States has yet to fully execute this initiative. In the 180s, campaigns by utility and oil companies argued that solar power is impractical and not cost effective. Unfortunately, the fossil fuel lobbyists succeeded and the federal government ended incentive programs for renewable energy. The 10s continued to discourage the use of solar power largely in part by the relatively low (conventional) energy prices. So now, in the 1st century, when energy prices are beginning to climb again, we should be looking more seriously into the possibilities of alternative energy, and moving with intent toward sustainability.

The major problems facing the use of renewable resources are those of economic and social barriers. Renewable resources tend to be capital intensive, so often compare unfavorably in cost terms with existing fossil sources, especially when operating in a privatized energy market. Open markets tend to favor a fast return on capital which acts against most renewable energy sources which are capital intensive, and often need significant development work. Another economic barrier that ought to be mentioned is the unequal distribution of research and development subsidies. Temporary instruments have been introduced to encourage niche markets for renewable resources to be developed, but these are generally short term only. This raises the problem that renewable sources are viewed by many as competing in an unfair climate against conventional fossil fuels. One of the benefits of many renewable sources, such as solar power, is their low impact on the environment, but this benefit cannot be utilized economically because the polluting effects of fossil fuels are usually not subject to a change. For example, the real cost of fossil fuels should include the environmental impact of acid rain and global warming, but these are not included in the pricing. Such costs are, of course, notoriously very difficult to allow for, but the real problem is the political and economic penalties incurred in imposing them. Not only would fuel bills soar, but also trade would suffer unless international competitors took other comparable action.

Our country has been and is struggling to find the correct way to encourage and implement solar usage. The US could learn a lot by following the good examples of several other industrial nations. For example, Israel and Japan are both heavily dependent on imported fossil fuels- even more so than the US. To counteract this dependency, they have created regulation to increase the use of solar power. Japanese homeowners had installed a total of 5 million solar hot-water heaters by the mid-180s and over 0,000 new systems in 187 alone. By 1, 65% of all homes in Israel were equipped with solar water heaters, and currently the Israeli government requires solar water heaters be installed in all new apartment buildings up to eight stories high. In many industrialized nations also, public concern about environmental problems and energy security have led governments to set ambitious goals for solar energy use. These goals have often been backed by increased funding for solar research and development, as well as economic incentives, including grants, low-interest loans, and tax credits for solar installation.

In the course of social barriers comes the ever-impending need for greed. Being on the receiving end of oil drilling, etc., people and society as a whole do not realize that our fuel supply is continuously dwindling. As long as people are being supplied with this particular demand, there is no problem at hand. However, it is only when this supply runs out that a crisis will result. All possible futures need to be taken into consideration. Our public suffers because our society and government seems to only be able to resolve conflicts that directly affect current generation and those of personal interest. The public is being blind sighted by our big businesses and therefore is unable to make unbiased decisions about the future.

To put things mildly in perspective, our generation has the opportunity to turn an old idea into some excellent use. Our fossil fuels are diminishing and we have the resources at hand to correct this dilemma. Unfortunately, the proper steps to correct this problem are not being taken. Our government needs to provide funding for increased research and development of renewable resources and a public education campaign should be initiated to increase knowledge of renewable and the dangers of non-renewable. In order to spark interest in our society, the government should make the following economic incentives offer grants towards the development of renewable resources, offer low interest loans toward the development of these resources, offer tax credit towards the purchase and development of solar energy, and also change the aim of subsidies from fossil fuels to solar energy and other renewable resources. Should these recommendations be taken seriously, many of the economic and social problems due to our dependency on (however lack of), fossil fuels could be resolved and therefore making solar energy one of the best technological advances that this century has to offer.

Joseph Campbell's Journey of the Hero, Gladiator

In the book The Hero With a Thousand Faces, Joseph Campbell lays out the steps that one must complete in order to become a hero. The first step of the cycle is the Separation phase, in which the hero must accept a challenge and experience that which is unfamiliar to him. Initiation, the second phase of the cycle, consists of several trials that not only challenges the hero, but also brings the reality of love and the opening up of the conscious. The final stage, The Return, is when the hero brings the knowledge he or she has learned during their voyage back to the people. Each phase is broken down to better explain the journey one must take in order to become a hero.

To illustrate, in the epical adventure film Gladiator, director Ridley Scott's clearly fits the main character, Maximus Decimus Meridius, into Campbells idea of the Heroic Journey. Maximus is a well-loved and trusted general in the roman army, as well as a close friend to the ailing Emperor Marcus Aurelius. The Emperor, asks him to take over as Emperor after he dies. He wants Maximus to return Rome to the people. Maximus isn't fond of the idea because he wanted to return to his family and home, but before he can give his answer, Commodus, the biological heir to the throne, murders his father. After Commodus orders Maximus and his family to be killed, Maximus escapes death only to be sold into slavery. Becoming a feared gladiator, he then seeks revenge. This revenge and his trials and circumstances are what make this Maximus greatest journey yet. All three phases, Separation, Initiation, and Return are completed.

For example, we first meet Maximus the hero in his Ordinary World, which will create a vivid contrast with the strange new world he is about to enter. It is the winter of 180 A.D. The mighty Roman Empire has conquered the entire Europe except for Germania. General Maximus is about to lead his 5000 men into battle. He smells and touches the earth before going into battle. He is more than human; he is a simple man close to the earth. Before giving the signal to his men, he introduces his dramatic need and we discover the heros personal goal. After his final battle he will return home to his family and resume his role as father and farmer. He later finds out that he will be separated from his desired Ordinary World.

Subsequently, Maximus journey starts with the first phase, The Separation. The Call to Adventure is the first sub-stage. Marcus Aurelius, the emperor, asks Maximus to become emperor after he passes away. Maximus is stunned by the emperors proposal but tells Marcus Aurelius that he will have to decline. Maximus has never been to Rome and has no experience with politics; he looks forward to returning home to his wife and son and living the peaceful life of an everyday farmer. This is The Refusal of the Call.

Therefore, The Refusal of the Call is where Maximus starts his decline to become the next Roman Emperor. After Commodus, out of jealousy, kills his own father he then asks for Maximus support, and when Maximus denies his offer, he becomes a victim to Commodus. The new Emperor orders not only Maximus family to be killed, but for Maximus to be killed as well. Maximus manages to escape, but does not make it to his family in time. Eventually Maximus passes out from a wound he suffered during his escape. Once he awakens, he finds that he has been captured and is to be sold as a slave. He arrives in Zuccabar, a Roman province, to start his training to become a gladiator, the nastiest blood-sport ever invented. He denies the exercises and refuses to fight with the other men.

While in Zuccabar, Maximus meets Proximo, the man who bought him. Proximo has a fascination with Maximus and becomes his aid. This fulfills the sub-stage of the Supernatural Aid. Even though Proximo has no supernatural powers, he was once a gladiator and helps Maximus discover the ways to reach Rome. He tells Maximus that he must win the crowd and he gives him a chest shield for protection. Maximus' survival through his fights builds his reputation with the crowds. The first Gladiator contest in the arena of Zucchabar is Maximus first test, beyond who lays the unknown. This is The Crossing of the first Threshold passage, which is a form of self-annihilation; the hero goes inward to be born again. It is also his first sense of crowds thirsting for blood. This reputation with the crowds is what takes him to Rome as the famous and feared gladiator the Spaniard. Maximus then realizes that he may have a way to get revenge against Commodus once he gets to Rome.

As well, The Belly of the Whale sub-stage is also present. Commodus believes that Maximus is dead. In actuality, Maximus has been held captive and is preparing for his day to come. He becomes a new person with new morals, fighting by the crowd-given name of Spaniard. He fights to win and is not concerned with death. As Campbell wrote, The temple interior, the belly of the whale, and the heavenly land beyond, above, and below the confines of the world, are one and the same. Maximus knows that if he keeps fighting he can slay Commodus, but if he dies he may meet his family in the afterlife.

Moreover, the second phase in Maximus journey is The Initiation. This point in the story is the most interesting, but also the most difficult for the adventurer. The sub-stage is The Road of Trials. Maximus must fight many battles while being famished and quite fatigued. Before Maximus battles a physical desire - to survive - he is confronted by an emotional desire when he meets Lucillas son Lucius it serves a dual function; it is a painful reminder of his own son, and takes the audience back into the story to the slaughter of his family, clearly underlining the motivation that spurs the protagonist to take action. He sees many glimpses of the afterlife, seeing his wife and eight-year-old son waiting. He must, however, fight on so that he may reach Commodus and free the people of his wrath.

In addition, Lucilla, Commodus sister realizes how corrupt her brother truly is, and isn't happy with the way he is ruling. There are slight hints of a past love affair between her and Maximus, but more important, they have a deep-rooted bonding they both have a son. Lucilla confronts Maximus face-to-face while he is imprisoned after revealing his identity to Commodus. She too is vulnerable and tells Maximus that she is living in a prison of fear because her son is in danger. She wants to win Maximus trust and tempts him to join her in deposing the Supreme Enemy. This could be the sub-stage Woman as a Temptress. Also, Lucilla could represent The Atonement with the Father, which suggests that sometimes a female protector helps the hero. Lucilla helps Maximus by informing him that they cannot wait any longer and he has to escape that same evening.

Furthermore, Maximus achieves a full Apotheosis by mastering himself as a hero. While brute strength and intelligence are hereditary, compassion and humility must be learned. Before the hero is summoned to his quest, he must undergo a test of character to prove to himself worthy of the natural and supernatural assistance he will receive from helpers during the journey. Maximus recognizes his strengths and weaknesses and reconciles them. His character has won the crowds sympathy, the other gladiator's admiration, Commodus' fear and jealousy, and the Senate's respect as the savior of Rome.

Additionally, Maximus Ultimate Boon would be his death, which will reunite him with his family in the afterlife as his best prize. They are waiting for him. He has to return to his family and end his sorrow. Touching the field of wheat he stroked in the opening scene. He reaches for a door. His world changes accordingly, reflecting a shining new reality. He dies peacefully. We see vivid, happy images of his wife and boy waiting for him at the other side of the door. His wife smiles and his son runs towards him. He collapses and is rewarded by society and fate, and he receives generous compensation for his sacrifices.

Maximus journey is completed when he enters the third and final stage, The Return to his family in the afterlife. By slaying Commodus, he brings freedom back to the Roman people. He brings them the Freedom to Live. The Republic is restored in Rome and the people may all live according to the fairness of the Senate. Maximus is martyred when his life ends. His heroism is celebrated with ceremony, ritual, and public honor. The hero has now completed the journey, from strength in the beginning to honor in the end. Gladiators carry Maximus body out of the arena. His rank is elevated both privately and publicly. In contrast to the sunrise of the opening scene, the film last scene is a glorious sunset.

In conclusion, after analyzing the epical adventure film Gladiator, there is no doubt that Ridley Scott's film is a perfect fit for Joseph Campbell's idea of the Hero Journey. In this exceptional masterpiece, Ridley shows Maximus as the perfect Hero, the most paramount I have analyzed since Odysseus. Maximus, who was a general from the Roman Empire, who later was sold into slavery and then becomes a feared gladiator that defies an Emperor. His situations and encounters clearly illustrate almost every step of Joseph Campbells design of the Heroic Journey. All three stages are included in the film; Departure, Initiation, and Return are accomplished by the heroic figure Maximus Decimus Meridius.

Dear Mr. Nicoletta

It arrived in the mail last week. As I look at the application envelope from the University of Arizona, I paused to reflect on how far I have come from Ms. Wilson's PM Kindergarten class. From eating glue to learning how to add, to writing essays, I have come along way since I first started school. Thirteen years in the Everett School District has brought me to the place where I can finally begin to plan for what my life after Jackson High School will be like. Over the years I have learned very important skills that will help me in my post high school education.

Now that my grade school years are coming to an end I really needed to start mapping out my future plans for after High School. Ever since I can remember I have always wanted to go to the University of Arizona when I finished school. We visited the Campus a few years ago and I knew it was for me. My plans are to move down there right after graduation. Based on the classes I have taken and interests I have gained at Jackson I would like to major in business. My years of taking Marketing at Jackson has really got me interested in this subject, and I would want to pursue a career in this field.

Ever since I was in Elementary School I thought for sure I was going to be a professional basketball player. When I got older and realized that that dream probably wasn't going to happen I started searching for other things that interested me. Over the past thirteen years I have learned many things that I will be able to use in the future. A career path that really interests me is Business. To be successful in this career you need good math and reading skills, along with the ability to be organized. I had always liked math so I really tried to work hard in that subject. As I worked my way up to higher math levels it really started to get hard, but my freshman and sophomore math teacher Mrs. Bruns was always there to help me. Without her I might have given up on a subject the may really help me in the future. Skills that she has taught me will definitely helpful to me as I move onto the University of Arizona.

One of the biggest things I learned throughout my school career, and would not be were I am today without it, was organization. In elementary school I was very sloppy and I would always forget what I had for homework. Then I got to middle school and was introduced to the planner. It was an amazing invention. It wasn't only the planner that got me organized though. Without my sixth grade block teacher Mrs. Strain, who forced me to use my planner, I would not have realized how important organization was.

One of my biggest learning experiences didn't have to do with school, but running cross country. I had always been pretty athletic but I was never really a runner. One day my 8th Grade PE teach and Jackson Cross Country Coach, Mr. Hruskha, ask me if I would be interested in joining cross country. Not knowing the physical demand I decided to give it a try. On the first day I felt like I was going to die, but not wanting to be a quitter I stuck with it. This really taught me to push myself. This showed me that I can do anything if I really put my mind to it, which will help me as my classes get harder as I move on to college.

Since I now knew that I wanted to pursue a career in business, so I thought I should probably take a class to make sure I really liked this subject. That's when I decided to take Larry Hanson's Intro to Marketing class. From the moment I walked into his class I knew I had chosen the right major to pursue. He showed a passion for the subject that no other teacher I have ever had has had. His passion for the subject really got me excited about learning everyday. On the first day he told us that he was there to teach us how to make money, which I have never had a class about before. We learned all kinds of things about starting a business to the economy, and of course making money, and this really got me interested in furthering my knowledge about business. This class had a big impact on my education. He taught me a whole other way of thinking which really got me pointed into the right direction for my future.

The next year I was saddened to hear that Mr. Hanson was no longer teaching marketing, but because of my interest in the subject I took Advanced Marketing anyway. To my great relief the new marketing teacher, Miss Miller, was just as good as Mr. Hanson. She was a great teacher, and after taking her class I knew for sure that I was going to major in Business when I got to college. In Advanced we got to run the Student Store, so that really help further my knowledge about running a business. Miss Miller also new a lot about what college business classes were like because she graduated from college only a few years before. This class really pointed me into the right direction for planning for my future.

Now that high school is coming to an end I am really excited about moving on and having new learning experiences as I start college. The skill and abilities I have acquired while at Jackson High School will take me along way in achieving my goal of becoming a business major. Many teachers throughout my years of schooling have helped me become the student that I am and I am very grateful to them. It saddens me to think that in a few short months I will be leaving all of these people that have helped me so much, but I am excited about the new opportunities I am about to experience.

Sincerely yours,

Ryan Dachenhausen

When it comes to slang, most words have their whole meaning flipped from that of the original definition. The word chronic is no different, but chronic does have a unique characteristic that not all slang terms have. Chronic has a plethora of slang meanings. This makes it a very versatile, yet in some cases a dangerous word.

Chronic has a dictionary definition that tells us it means of long duration. A person with chronic money problems has had a stretch of time in which they have experienced monetary problems. Another definition in the dictionary says lasting for a long period of time or marked by frequent recurrence. A person with a chronic illness is battling an illness that has been developing over a long period of time, or one that keeps coming back.

As a slang term, chronic has made a total flip to the opposite side of the spectrum in its use amongst young people. It can be used to convey that something is to your liking. If you saw a great movie recently, you could tell all your friends that I was the chronic! You can use this term to describe anything including food. If you heard someone say they ate some brownies that were chronic, that would mean the cookies were excellent.

Chronic also has negative meanings as a slang term. This is where the danger portion of this word comes in. Chronic is also slang for marijuana, so be careful before you try those chronic brownies! Even worse than that in some portions of the country and within the drug community, it's also a synonym for marijuana with crack cocaine mixed in it, yikes!

The many different meanings for the word chronic make it very versatile. One can use it in many situations whether slang or otherwise. Its use amongst drug users can get you into some trouble in some cases. This is what makes it dangerous, so I suggest only using it within your personal group of friends.

The Merchant of Venice

In the play The Merchant of Venice, Shylock, a money lender, has the right to take a pound of flesh from Antonio, a Merchant. Shylock was abused and not given the same rights as Christians, who thought themselves as far superior to the Jews, Shylock's religion. Antonio had agreed to the bond which he and Shylock made, which entitled that if Antonio was not able to repay the 000 ducats by a certain day, then Shylock would cut off the pound of flesh. Antonio could not repay Shylock the money so Shylock, by law, must take the pound of flesh.

Shylock should be able to take the pound of flesh from Antonio because Antonio agreed to the bond, knowing whole heartedly the full agreements and arrangements of the deal. The bond stated that if Antonio did not repay the thousand ducats by a certain day, then Shylock shall be able to cut off a pound of Antonio's flesh from whichever part of his body that Shylock pleased. Now Antonio, as it would seem, only agreed to this remarkable deal because he believed that his ships would return before the day of payment, bringing many times the value of the money owed. So basically, Antonio was very foolish to accept this contract. A deal is a deal and when both parties know the full arrangements, the consequences must follow. It's the same as a contract. If not for Portia, this case would never have gone to court, which it did not deserve to because it was a fair bond between two honest, hard working citizens.

Shylock was intent on gaining revenge for the insults and abuse he had been given by Antonio. Wouldn't you feel the same way as Shylock if you had been cursed at, called an unbeliever of your sacred religion, spat on and overall treated as if you were not equal, as if you didn't belong in the same area or deserve the same credit for hard work?. This is the abuse Shylock had to take from the Christians, people who thought they were far superior than the Jews. All of this is the reason that Shylock arranged the bond, as if to prove a point to the whole Christian society that Jews had power too and are also human beings. As Shylock said to Salerio, If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? And if you wrong us, do we not revenge? (.1.57). The last question in particular, If you wrong us, do we not revenge?, sums up the one thing Shylock was after, revenge. Revenge is a normal emotion that every human feels and this is what Shylock wanted.

Throughout the play, the audience, is asked to take an ugly view on Shylock from what Antonio and the other characters had said. We are also asked to have sympathy for him and display empathy by understanding the position he has been put in. An example of this is in a speech made by Shylock in a conversation with Salerio, when he exclaimed I am a Jew. Hath not a Jew eyes? Hath not a Jew hands, organs, senses, dimensions, affections and passions? (.1.5). Here, Shylock is talking about how Jews and Christians are equal and that they are the same people, but just believe in different religions. We sympathise for him and understand where he is coming from, imagining being in a similar circumstance. We tend to forget that, on top of all this, Shylock's daughter, Jessica, has just run off with her partner Lorenzo, a Christian himself. Now not only did Jessica take off with half of Shylock's wealth, she insulted him by running away with a Christian after knowing what her father had been put through by the Christian community. Once again we empathise for Shylock. This shows the character and determination of the man who, despite all these problems, still pursues his case against Antonio just so he can prove a point and be treated fairly. Not just for himself, but for the whole Jewish society. Take a moment and put yourself in Shylock's shoes. Think about what you would do and how you would feel after you had worked extremely hard and still had to put up with insults and abuse just because of your religious belief and adding to all this, your only daughter abandons you. Your reaction, of course,is to seek revenge on the people who caused you this grief. Which is exactly what Shylock was doing.

During the court scene, Bassanio offered Shylock the 000 ducats repaid as many times over as he wished. Shylock, rightly so, declined this offer as if he had agreed and received the money, it would have been another sign to the Christians that they were better than the Jews and that they could control what the Jews did. But the brave Shylock stood up to them, he wasn't after more money, he was just trying to demonstrate a point.

If a Christian harms a Jew, he will get a small punishment, but on the other hand if a Jew harms a Christian, he will be condemned to death. The Christians, of course, saw no wrong with this ridiculous belief because, as they viewed it, they were a cut above the rest. So as long as the Christians felt this way, the Jews would have to go on suffering. Until Shylock thought enough was enough and he got an opportunity to chase justice by following through with the bond.

Shylock has the right to take the pound of flesh off Antonio because he has been abused, insulted, spat on, discriminated and treated like a dog by the whole Christian society and in particular the Merchant, Antonio. Shylock made the bond with Antonio, where they both agreed on the arrangements and consequences of the deal, to try to prove a point to the Christians and to get just revenge. Given these circumstances, Shylock has the right to take the pound of flesh off Antonio.

When one thinks of education, almost automatically public education comes to mind. Through the years, preferences for educating children have slowly been changing. Home schooling was primarily restricted to religious groups, but in the past several years, it has rapidly been moving into mainstream society (Ray). Parents today are deciding to home school their children, although there are those who still believe public education is better. Home schooling is legal in every state and involves as many as 1.5 million children (Wingert & Katrowitz). Critics of home schooling raise questions about academic and social issues. Parents of the home schooled maintain they are not valid. Home schooling is overall more beneficial than public schools in the education of children.

The idea of home schooling first became popular in the 160's and 170's in religious and hippie communities in an attempt to train children in their values. However, in many states home schooling was illegal until a court battle in the 10's legalized it. Since that time, this type of education has been growing worldwide. In 18, it was estimated that about 1.5 million children were being home schooled. By 000, the estimate changed to 1.7 million children (Ray). In addition, the reputation of home schooling changed considerably. In a survey conducted in 18, 5 percent of the respondents showed evidence that home schooled children were well adjusted socially and performed on standardized tests as well or better than students in public schools (Wingert & Katrowitz).

Critics attack home schooling on many fronts, arguing that qualified professionals do not teach children and homes often do not possess the same qualified resources of public schools. Even though educational resources and opportunities for home schooled youngsters are not equal, home schooled students continue to learn and make academic gains in a safe academic environment. They benefit from many advantages. There are the advantages of flexibility of instructional time, multiage grouping, cooperative learning for mastery and small class sizes as compared to students in a public setting (Ramanowski). In some states, public schools form partnerships with home school educators providing the use of public school libraries and computers. Resource centers have been established for parents and families to facilitate independent study programs to obtain books and other materials. Therefore, home schooled children are thriving with the arrival of improved technology and personal computers. They are no longer entirely dependent on parental education and their personal teaching skills or qualifications (Wichers).

Another criticism of home schooling was that regular evaluation of children's learning rarely occurs in the home setting. The Ohio Department of Education reported that home schooled students were tested by a certified teacher to track their academic progress. The research was assembled to evaluate many different aspects of home schooling, but the focus was on academic competency. The report used data from the National Home School Legal Defense and the Home Research Institute. It found that home schooled students' average score was between the 65th and 80th percentile compared to 50 percent of the public school population. (Wichers).

Research shows that home schooled students score above average on other standard achievement tests. One logical reason being these students received more one-on-one instruction. The Ohio Department of Education reported that 80 percent of home schooled children across all age groups achieved individual scores above the national average on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (Wichers). Reports from Boston University stated that students educated at home possess a passion for knowledge, independence, and self-reliance that enable them to excel in intellectually challenging programs of study (Romanowski). Lastly, several studies of cognitive and affective development in home schooled students consistently found that achievement scores on standardized tests were slightly higher for home schooled students than their peers in public schools. The example cited was on the Stanford Achievement Test used in Washington State for three consecutive years. When the scores were compared to national norms, home schooled students; for example, scored above the 60th percentile in math, science, and verbal skills tests (Latham).

ACT scores by home schooled students give the concept of home schooling integrity to be recognized as a successful educational method. Billups reported that home schooled children placed first on one college-entrance test for three consecutive years. These students scored higher on the ACT than students who attended public schools. The ratings on the score are 1-6, with 6 being the highest possible score. Home schooled children's average score was a .8 compared to the national average of 1. In addition, Rudner's research did find that homes schooled students did well on the 18 ACT scores too. This evidence further supports the fact that strong dedication to education through home schooling will obtain a flourishing academic future.

It is not a disadvantage to be from a home school environment when seeking admission to a college. Home schooled students have little difficulty being accepted into colleges and universities. Estimates indicate there are about 00,000 home schooled students in college now (Klicka). These students are being actively recruited for their abilities. Universities report that home schooled students are sought for their higher ability to read for comprehension. In addition, they know how to access and use information. Their continual commitment to education, is a good indicator of their success in academics going into higher education settings (Wichers). The comprehensive support system that home school families have, achievement scores, the skills that they develop and draw on, make them feasible contenders for higher education and academic excellence.

Another argument against home schooling, after the quality of education, focuses on isolation and lack of development of adequate social skills to enable home schooled young people to interact effectively with others later in life. Opponents believe a home schooled young person does not gain essential socialization skills and learn how to get along with others while in a home school setting. To the contrary, most home school families belong to at least one support network. Home schooled students form their own social clubs like their own sports teams to 4-H Clubs. Some students get together and go on field trips too(Wichers).

Many families who home school their children form communities of support groups to lessen isolation. They strive to gain information about curriculum standards and to provide materials and information about the legal aspects relevant to home schooling. As a result, it was learned that families were then able to incorporate this information into their individual lifestyles, values, and family goals as it relates into their child's curriculum as they educated them. It was then noted that children worked harder to fulfill social and academic expectations because of their supportive environment (Wichers). Rudner's study confirmed the fact that dedication, support, and resources weigh heavily on successful academic achievement.

In the same way, other studies indicate the social development of home schooled students is more advanced than that of public school students. One study used the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scare with home school students from the 4th to 1th grade. They scored higher than public school students. This fact indicates home schooled students have higher self-concepts. Self-concepts reflect socialization, which points toward the conclusion that they are not socially deprived (Latham).

In addition, children taught at home tend to have stronger relationships with their parents. This occurs because they usually spend an average of two to three hours per day receiving direct instruction. The typical public school student spends more than two hours a day on lunch, recess, and changing classes (Russo). Home schooled children spend more time on improving their strength, working on their weaknesses, while building positive relationships with their family members. Other social factors in favor of home schooling are children often become more independent and more responsible with their behavior, it decreases the influence of peer pressure, and trips are planned at the families' convenience, so children spend more time with the family (Latham).

In conclusion, home schooling is not for everyone. Families must make important choices about their time and desire to take full responsibility for the education of their children. The point is that for those who are able to follow this system and stick to it, they can provide a better education than the public schools. Another note worthy point is not whether this method is the best approach, but the willingness to recognize that home schooling is working and a better choice than public education in many areas. The data does not lie. Home schooled young people are scoring higher on standardized tests and achieving in college with socially acceptable interaction in today's society. Home school achievers are challenging the old stereotyped opinions that home schooling is considered a last chance choice for those without aspirations and the antisocial.

Once the first initial week that felt like pure chaos was over, I have settled my nerves and managed to prepare my mind and body to absorb and remember every piece of information that I can.

After completing this week's reading assignment in Peak Learner, I have learned a great deal about myself. Finding out that I was a Stringer rather than a Grouper came as no surprise. I always knew how I preferred to learn a subject, but I never really realized how I could get the most from it.

This week was a little stressful for me. I was not able to get together with my teammates, as I preferred. I think it would have been easier for me if we could have put a little more effort into communicating about our assignments. The Little, Brown Book search activity was not a problem, but I was pulling my hair out by the roots over the outline. For the first couple of days of this week, there was hardly any contact among the four of us. I had a brain cramp, and I did not have a clue of how to begin the outline. At this point, we have not even discussed which topic we were going to outline. Nevertheless, in the end we were able to pull all of the pieces together and accomplish our goal.

I did realize, however, that working in a team that consisted of different styles of learning, and personalities is very challenging. There are different views on how a person thinks a task should be accomplished. You may not agree with their point of view, but you have to manage to come together to discuss the possibilities, compromise, and get the job done. It takes much effort and patience to be a team player and discuss things openly.

I also realized that I could function as a Grouper and still achieve the task presented to me in a manner that suited me. Knowing that I can adapt to, and obtain different learning styles has peaked my enthusiasm even more.

I have become a Peak Learner, and I am ready for what week three has to offer.
