To ensure that the United States remains successful and remains the prominent leader of the world, we must first take care of our children. Banning homosexual marriages can do this; it will lessen the amount of improper behavior our children see and imitate.

Upon the completion of Slaughterhouse-Five I concluded, that perhaps Vonnegut had attempted to convey several different conclusions in writing his story. We decided that time travel was a means to add a science fiction aspect to the novel, as well as a way to project his viewpoint of time. Another conclusion that has fascinated me was that of the illusion of free will. Vonnegut forced us to question whether or not free will truly exists. The Tralfamdorians, who believe that moments are structured and that moments in time have already occurred, have an attitude of accepting their fate knowing they have no way of changing what is to come. If time is structured, as Vonnegut proposed, there would be no such thing as free will, because all would be decided before it even took place. Even after the seminars, and group presentations, Vonnegut's concept of free will being an illusion, is still very much a question to me; a question I hope to discover an answer to. These conclusions are connected as the concepts are both derived from the Tralfamadorians. They both deal with Billy's need to escape the realities he is forced to face, and his ability to acknowledge his fate. My new-found inquiry questions whether Vonnegut uses the Tralfamadorian concepts to find a solution to something?

Perhaps the Tralfamadorian concept of time is attempting to find a solution to accept things as they may come. The Tralfamadorians exist in the fourth dimension. They have a perception of time that allows them to look at life's finer moments, and a philosophy of acceptance of all things. They look at time as a collection of moments that exist simultaneously rather than linear progression. They preach to Billy about accepting his fate, as he is powerless in changing it. Rationalizing death is made convenient by the fourth dimension. They dismiss death simply stating, so it goes, believing that no one really dies since at a different moment in time, he or she is still exists.

When a Tralfamadorian sees a corpse, all he thinks is that the dead person is in bad condition in that particular moment, but that same person is just fine in plenty of other moments. Now when I myself hear that somebody is dead, I simply shrug and say what the Tralfamadorians say about dead people, which is 'so it goes'. (p. 7)

Spoken by Billy Pilgrim, this passage signifies a comfort in the phrase so it goes. Billy can begin to accept all the death he has witnessed if he accepts as true that although someone may be dead in one moment, he or she is alive in all other moments of his or her life. Death becomes no more permanent then a certain moment which has been revisited countless times. The Tralfamadorians wish for people not to worry about senseless things they are incapable of changing; which according to them is everything, past, present and future. Although many may argue that Billy is hallucinating in his experiences on Tralfamadore, this is his way of escaping a world he sees as destroyed by war, a world he no longer understands.

Vonnegut is successful in using the Tralfamadorians to make us as the readers question the existence of free will. I found it intriguing how he used aliens that resembled toilet plungers to make us doubt something we have never questioned before. They believe that all moments have already occurred therefore they are able to accept their respective fates, needing not believe in free will. According to one Tralfamadorian,

If I hadn't spent so much studying Earthlings … I wouldn't have any idea what was meant by 'free will.' I've visited thirty-one inhabited planets in the universe, and I have studied reports on one hundred more. Only on Earth is there any talk of free will (p.86).

The Tralfamadorians disregard any possibility of the idea of free will, believing that humans are the only beings to believe in such a thing. They maintain that it is an illusion that we as humans have, and aim to have Billy believe the same. When Billy becomes unstuck in time, he is able to revisit moments of his past where there was an absence of free will. As a young boy, Billy was thrown into the water by his father on the notion of sink or swim. When Billy chose to sink to the bottom, he was brought to the top against his will. He was conscripted into a war he wished not to fight against his will. He went into the war as a joke, improperly trained and clothed, as a chaplain's assistant. He survived the war by mere coincidence, when the properly clothed, properly trained, willing soldiers died. Billy's survival shows that if he had trained hard and been appropriately clothed perhaps he would have died along with the rest. His survival is evidence that makes free will an illusion.

The most probable answer to my inquiry is that Vonnegut uses the concept of time to eliminate pain from death, and emphasize fate rather than free will. Vonnegut creates the Tralfamadorian concept of time for Billy to escape the harshness of the world and to attempt to have Billy live a Tralfamadorian life in a human world. However maybe in placing the philosophies of time and freewill in the mouths of aliens rather than human characters, giving the novel a science fiction side, Vonnegut is attempting to show us the consequences of the avoidance of reality. Perhaps Vonnegut attempts to show us that although we may act like free will exists, we are really living in the absence of it. Vonnegut may possibly be trying to illustrate that we are locked into our fate, and fighting it is pointless. Or maybe Vonnegut uses the Tralfamdorians to simply show that a moment can last forever if we let it live on in our memories.

Aas I go on in training, I tend to feel that Im in good shape generally spaeking, my body fat ratio dropped significantly, and my flexibility has increased ..The whole experience made more aware of which nutritional items are good for my body, and which aren not. It improved my self-image, and it increased my muscle strength, giving me greater capacity to left more weights.

The Harlot by the Side of the Road Forbidden Tales of the Bible, by Jonathan Kirsch, was one of the most interesting and explicit collections of biblical stories that I have ever encountered. I spent much of my earlier years in bible lessons and listening to Sunday sermons, but never was I exposed to the sex and violence that the stories of this book tells.

Obviously, I was charged to write a rather lengthy paper detailing my thoughts about this book, and to find some commonality among the stories and expound upon those commonalties.

Although I am not a very deep thinker, and an even poorer writer, the two themes that seemed to be very obvious throughout these stories were (1) Women always seem to be at the center of or the cause of a major controversy, i.e. war, murder and death and () Women had the innate ability to scheme and connive to get what they wanted or what they felt they were justly entitled too. I will attempt to cohesively address both of these themes in the following pages.

Let me take the latter of these themes first, as I find it to be the most interesting and compelling The art of conniving and scheming.

The stories of Lot and his daughters and Tamar and Judah are two examples of how women of ancient biblical times got what they wanted. In addition, the most interesting of these two stories, in my opinion, is the story of Tamar and Judah.

Obviously, I do not need to retell the story, but for the sake of clarity, let me give my take on the story.

Tamar is in a pre-arranged marriage to the eldest son of a wealthy family. Before producing an heir to the family fortune, he loses favor with God and dies. According to ancient custom and law the next oldest son would then take Tamar as his wife and provide the family with an heir. However, in his greed he fails to do so and falls out of favor with God and dies. This leaves only one son left to perform the duty and provide and heir, but he was too young. So Judah, send Tamar to live with her father until the son becomes of age.

Judah knows completely that he has lied to his daughter-in-law and has no intention in allowing his son to enter into a relationship with this woman, because he has already lost two of his sons. Tamar, eventually learning of her father-in-laws deception, decides to take what is rightfully hers and ultimately, she conceives a child with none other than Judah himself.

Tamar uses a remarkable vindictive ploy, which consist of seducing her father-in-law to regain her status in society and in the house of Judah.

One might ask why Tamar felt the need to concoct such an elaborate scheme. My interpretation provides the following For reasons easy to surmise, Tamar's feelings of utter despair, helplessness and hopelessness are obvious reasons. We have cultural and historical sources that provide us with detailed accounts of the hellish existence of the ancient widow completely at the mercy of social control. She was a body in morning, forbidden, degraded, marginialized, and ultimately forgotten. It is easy to imagine what Tamar's, or any woman in that situation, life might have been like after she was sent back to live at her father's house with a vague promise, which Judah does not honor.

Ultimately, Tamar's scheming allows her to gain control of her life and she finds her place in the house of Judah. This is much the same scenario with the story of Lot and his daughters. Although incest, in today's society, is the most incomprehensible act that anyone can perform, in ancient times, it was not as taboo as never baring children.

Lots daughters, after retreating to the mountains, must look to the future. With the realization that they are the only three people left on earth, the daughters scheme to lay with their fathers so that they could each bare a child and continue the family name.

In this story, as well as the story of Tamar, women seem to have little significance in society, other than baring children. In addition, in the unfortunate circumstance that this task becomes inconceivable, then women take matters into their own hands. Planning and conspiring to do what ever is necessary to fulfill their needs wants and desires.

The second theme of these stories, controversy, has a much more profound statement, but I have little to offer in the way of substantial data. All of the remaining stories of the book, with the exception of the Jephthah and His Daughter and Zipporah and Moses, have women at the center of controversy and ultimately murder and/or war.

I do not feel that women intentionally caused the controversy that centered around them. Women were treated as objects of possession or personal property. Therefore, violation of their rights seemed to happen often in ancient times. Men would offer up their daughters, wives or concubines to anyone that may be causing a disturbance. Then once these women were violated, the men would become anger and rebel against those that violated their property.

This scenario seemed to run in circles. King David sent his daughter to tend to his ailing son, knowing or at least having a hint that he was lusting for her and wanted to lay with her. After she was violated sexually, he seemed to ignore that it happened and her brothers took him into the wilderness and murdered him. No one, including King David, questioned the sudden disappearance of Amnon.

This situation was similar in the Traveler and His Concubine. The mob intended to sodomize the Levite man, and instead his concubine was offered. She was then gang-raped to death. This ultimately caused war. Again, the property of man was violated and this caused controversy.

I could continue to list other examples in the bible, outside of the stories in this book that would lend support to the controversial issues of women and men. Although this argument may seem weak, I would continue to argue that women as objects or property are used by men to get them out of a tight jam and then the men stage their revenge at a later date and usually in the terms of war or individual killings.

The argument of controversy seems weak and I am sure that further examination and study of this topic would provide more evidence to support my claim.

In closing, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It is interesting that over thousands of years that women have changed very little. The difference in ancient times and modern times is that women are more forthright with their scheming and conniving and the issue of controversy, centered around women, still exist.

Society has come to believe in the perfectibility of the body, and girls are bearing the brunt of this social change, says Brumberg, In this post-virginal world, they are experiencing the pressure of appearance up keep from almost every angle Technology, economics, medicine, advertising, family life, consumerism, all of which are pushing the idea that the body is more important than the mind.[p.8]

Brumberg argues that the process of sexual maturation is more difficult for girls today than it was a century ago because of a set of historical changes that have resulted in a peculiar mismatch between girls biology and todays culture.She identifies a significant development over the course of the last 100 years the age at which girls begin menstruating has dropped dramatically. As Brumberg points out, many girls today may be sexually active before the age at which their great-great-grandmothers began menstruating. However, there has been no commensurate drop in the age of psychological development. Consequently, girls are running a much greater risk of becoming sexually active before they are emotionally prepared for it. [p.6]

This situation is exacerbated by the gradual relaxing of societal safeguards for adolescent

girls. Girls not only mature earlier, but they are granted a greater amount of independence at an earlier age. In the half-decade since the end of World War II, adolescents and teenagers have made significant advances in personal purchasing power. Consequently, many girls receive more guidance from the marketing strategies of major corporations than from family members. The problem, of course, is that these corporations have agendas of their ownspecifically, selling products. Hence, not only advertisements, but even teen-focused magazines that are supported by advertising have a vested interest in focusing girls attention on improving their appearance.[p.48]

Growing up has never been easy for girls, but it is more prolonged and perilous than ever before. Puberty can begin as early as eight; first sexual intercourse commonly occurs between 15 and 17; and women remain single and sexually active into their middle or late twenties. Forty-five percent of women who came of age in the 150s and '60s were still virgins at age 1, and for many of those 1-year-old women, their first sexual intercourse occurred on their wedding night. But only 17 percent of women who came of age in the 170s and '80s were virgins at 1. Since many Generation X women postpone marriage until their late twenties, few, if any are likely to be virgins on their wedding night. As a consequence, girls are exposed to the problems associated with unmarried sex at an earlier age and for a longer period of time than a generation ago.

Young girls are now at greater risk for early and traumatic sexualization. According to Brumberg, there have also been dramatic shifts in the social controls governing the sexuality of adolescent girls. Professional providers of contraceptive and abortion services have replaced mothers as the main source of authority on sexual matters.[p.185] This shift has contributed to the demoralization of female sexuality and the decline in chastity. Brumberg is critical of the medicalization of girls' sexuality, with its emphasis on sexual health and

self-management. This places an unsupportable burden on young girls to protect themselves.[p.10] It also neglects girls' emotional needs for affiliation and affection, as well as their desire to have their sexuality invested with some larger meaning.

A hundred years ago, women were lacing themselves into corsets and teaching their daughters to do the same. The ideal of the day, however, was inner beauty a focus on good deeds and a pure heart. Today American women have more social choices and personal freedom than ever before. But fifty-three percent of our girls are dissatisfied with their bodies by the age of thirteen, and many begin a pattern of weight obsession and dieting as early as eight or nine.Why?

In The Body Project, Brumberg answers this question, drawing on diary excerpts and media images from 180 to the present. Tracing girls attitudes toward topics ranging from breast size and menstruation to hair, clothing, and cosmetics, she exposes the shift from the Victorian concern with inner beauty to our modern focus on outward appearance--in particular, the desire to be model-thin and sexy. She believes that someone who wants to lose weight in order to be a changed and better person outwardly--to fit [her] inner self, has substituted internal controls for the external controls of years past, like corsets and Victorian morality.[p.xxi]

Brumberg meticulously documents the downward slide of girls' aspirations and ambitions over the past century, from improving one's character through good works to improving one's body through grueling workouts. Another major threat is sexual victimization. Girls who dont like themselves, who feel ugly, are more susceptible to manipulation and abuse, she said. They want to be wanted so badly that they dont make very good choices. The commercialization and exploitation of sexuality are strong contributing factors. There is a deep female beauty imperative here. We are a fat-phobic society, and smart kids pick this up, she said.

Fashion magazines, which girls begin to read at age nine or ten and continue to consult well into their 0s, provoke body shame. Virtually all these magazines send one clear message Your body is a mess. For example, the cover of the December 17 Jump, a magazine for young teens, features stories entitled, Body Bummers How to go from feeling flawed to fab and Sizing up boobs. Such magazines tell girls to like themselves, whatever their size or shape, but they only feature flat-chested models who are six feet tall and 105 pounds. Girls respond to body shame with rigid technocratic monitoring of their bodies. Again, the strenuous pursuit of feminine virtue has not disappeared but shifted location. The virtue of staying sexually pure has been replaced by the virtue of staying physically fit. [p.1]

Brumberg recommends that we put the emphasis on what female bodies can do, rather than what they look like. Where do we draw the line between healthy and unhealthy attention to appearance? How can we confront and counter the messages girls receive about the importance of good looks? Do we need to explicitly discuss our values about appearance and beauty or is it enough to emphasize other aspects of girls lives, such as athletic, musical, artistic, and intellectual abilities? According to Brumberg, At the close of the twentieth century, the female body poses an enormous problem for American girls. . . because of the culture in which we live [p. xvii]. How did forces outside the family become so influential? How can families regain their central role in educating and advising daughters about puberty and sexuality, while acknowledging the influence of modern medicine, consumer products, and the media?

Brumberg encourages a new era of advocacy for girls, yet some argue that focusing on the special needs of girls puts them at risk for discrimination. Girls need equal rights, some people maintain, not protection. Do girls in our culture need more protection and guidance than boys? What are the risks in protecting girls? What is to be gained? What is the difference between protection and girl advocacy as Brumberg describes it? What forms should advocacy take? [p.08, 10]

Brumberg wants adults to help them forge a new code of sexual ethics. In Girl Advocacy Again, she asserts that girls who hate their bodies do not make good decisions about partners, or about the kind of sexual activity that is in their best interest. This leads to date rape, teenage pregnancy and girls being sexually exploited rather than sexually expressive in a postvirginal age.[p.1]

Brumbergs new moral code would preserve personal freedom and expression. But its a difficult task, because many adults are as steeped in the culture as adolescents. As Brumberg herself says, at least in middle-class America, girls grow up hearing adult women

talk about how much they hate their own thighs. girls are at greater risk of being

exploited or abused by young men who have no sense of gallantry or protectiveness toward women. Young women are freer, but it's not clear they are happier or more secure than previous generations.[p.01] Although, taking a wordly perspective, we, american women, should be grateful.
