If penicillin had been tested on guinea pigs, it might never have reached the public. It is lethal to guinea pigs, deactivates the blood system of rabbits and is deadly to cats. Each year, thousands of animals are brutally tortured in laboratories, in the name of biomedical research. The struggle against this tyranny is a struggle as important as any of the moral and social issues that have been fought over in recent years. Animal rights are an emotional issue, second only, perhaps to the bitter abortion debate. For decades the value of animal research has been grossly overrated. Although researchers have depended on animal test data to achieve medical advances, there should be other means of research because testing on animals is cruel and inhumane and often unnecessary.

In any event, The American Medical Association, also known as A.M.A., believes that research involving animals is absolutely essential to maintaining and improving the health of the American people. They point out, that virtually every advance in medical science in the twentieth century, from antibiotics to organ transplants, has been achieved either directly or indirectly through the use of animals in laboratory experiments. The Foundation for Biomedical Research has included, a study by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services concluded that animal research has helped increase our life expectancy by twenty point eight years. (Animal Activism. Par.1) The A.M.A. also emphasize that animal research holds the key for solutions to AIDS, cancer, heart disease, aging and congenital defects. Lastly, they insist that the result of these experiments has been the elimination or control of many infectious diseases. This has meant a longer, healthier, better life with much less pain and suffering. For many patients, it has meant life itself. (A.M.A., Par.7,14,16,5)

Although this may be true, considering the negative effects some medicines have on animals, such as the death of guinea pigs as result of being injected with penicillin; can we be sure there arent cancer-curing drugs available but not yet released or even discovered due to adverse affects on the animals used in testing these potential cures? Absolutely not, if scientists continue to rely solely on the effects shown in the animals behavior, characteristics, illness, and/or death.

Indeed, a life can be taken or created in a matter of seconds and with that has come the miracles of modern medicine. People have come to expect science to save lives, prevent illness, relieve suffering and improve the quality of life. The means of curing, treating and preventing diseases are not achieved by magic or accident. Medical advances are gained through years of intensive research - research in which laboratory animals have played, and continue to play, a critical role. About eighty to nighty percent of experiments take place on mice, rats, and birds which are not protected under the law even though they are capable of feeling pain. (Are There Alternatives?, Par. 4) Experimenting and testing on animals is morally wrong because, it is inhumane and torturous. We, as a country, should not condone cruelty to animals. Why is it a person can be charged with a crime for not feeding their pet, but these companies torture and murder millions of animals and nothing happens to them? Because we as people will do nothing to stop these heinous crimes. The reason we cannot prevent these terrible acts is because we do not know they are occurring or have knowledge of what is occurring but the general public cant stop these large laboratories.

Above all, most of what we do to animals we would never do to people. We understand that people have certain rights that keep them from being experimented on by other people. What we dont realize is that it is impossible to justify rights for humans, who are a type of animal, and deny rights to non-human animals. Animals have a right to life just as humans have a right to life. Human morality must expand to acknowledge and respect the rights of non-human animals.
