This critic feels that jealousy is the main cause of a few of the characters deaths in that play. He starts by defining the word Jealousy as, “a state of fear, suspicion, revenge or envy caused by a real or imagined threat or challenge to one’s possessive instincts. It may be provoked by rivalry, in sexual love, by competition or by desires for the qualities or possessions of another.” Roderigo is infatuated with Desdemona and has been for some time. He is willing to do anything to win her love. He is jealous of Othello because Desdemona is in love with him. Going along with the definition of jealousy given above, Roderigo desires the possessions of another person. It is this jealousy, which moves him to do many evil things in the play, even tries to kill to Cassio. It is also this jealousy that gets him killed. In act four, Roderigo is convinced by Iago to kill Cassio. In act five; Roderigo attempts to kill Cassio but only ends up wounding him. At the same time Cassio wounds Roderigo, Iago, who was watching the fight, leaves only to come back later and kill Roderigo. Roderigo’s jealousy brought upon his own death. Iago fits the definition of jealousy because he is in a state of revenge, which is provoked by competition. He is getting his revenge against Othello because he cannot get over the fact that Cassio was appointed to lieutenant instead of him. The author describes Iago as “cunning, crafty, intellectual and intelligent,” therefore most readers would not suspect that jealousy would affect him. However, this shows that jealousy can affect anyone at any time and there is no one that is above it.
