1. A Meaningful Passage

“He…drew the next batch of work toward him, with the scrap of paper on top of it. He flattened it out. On it was written, in a large unformed handwriting

I love you. ”

This passage from 184, written by George Orwell, was (in my opinion) the most significant passage in the novel because it was Julia’s first confession of her love to Winston. Its significance lies in the danger they both faced once the truth was out in the open. This left them both vulnerable to the Thought Police and more importantly, death. Their love, however, proved to overcome this threat as they continued to secretly meet. With each encounter, Winston feels more and more like a human, as he comes to experience freedom, hope, and emotions never felt before. The following events in the book revolve around or directly result from the love between the two comrades, therefore making this passage significant as the plot unravels.

. A Turning Point

A startling twist in 184 came when Winston was being tortured by O’Brien to coerce him into accepting the beliefs and practices of the Party. In the past, Winston’s strong sense of hatred against the Party prevented him from accepting these beliefs, no matter what torture or punishment he faced. In the following passage, however, when faced with his absolute worst fear- rats- Winston completely collapses in a mental breakdown. His failure proves he gave in to the power of the Party and therefore he loses his sense of individuality and all emotion, including love. In this swift collapse, he not only betrays Julia, the one he loves, but he also gives in to the Party by doing so. This represents such a significant twist because prior to this incident Winston still had remnants of thoughts against the party and feelings of love towards Julia. Following this passage he has truly accepted the Party and denied his own individuality and feelings of love.

“But he had suddenly understood that in the whole world there was just one person to whom he could transfer his punishment- one body that he could thrust between himself and the rats. And he was shouting frantically, over and over Do it to Julia! Do it to Julia! Not me! Julia! I don’t care what you do to her. Tear her face off, strip her to the bones. Not me! Julia! Not me!”
